Quote:Question here, and I don't want to stereotype people who have McJobs because everyone needs gainful employment: but are you sure the person working there KNEW you got it wrong?Hehe, that happened to me with a McDonald's prize, one of those ones you peel off the cup. The question wasn't as simple as Zombie Man's, it had some addition, subtraction and multiplication, but still not overly difficult. I got it wrong and they still gave me the free burger or whatever it was. The funniest part was this was right after I finished a 3 hour Calculus exam, which I aced.

Quote:Something like a Curry Man Dance Party might blow your mind.Yes. Mars.
Some awesome people/events have come from it, though (my favorites being "Macho Man" Randy Savage, the Andy Kaufman stunt, Rowdy Roddy Piper's movies, and The Rock/Dwayne Johnson who I really hope will indeed one day play Black Adam). -
Quote:NC Soft Marketing: if you are going to use Rob Liefeld as a Statesman artist, you should promote the fact!Oddly, it looks like Statesman has been partaking from the superhero silicone stash as well.
Coming soon to patch notes: Statesman no longer has any feet. -
Quote:The world of professional wrestling must seem like Mars to you.Wow. I'd always assumed that was a picture of adult Peter Brady from a reunion.
Also, is it just me not being used to seeing real unibrows, or does that guy have a fake unibrow?
And... it probably says something good about you that it does. -
Quote:Just don't pull off a Nick Simmons now. That's a whole other legal mattercorrect, but I tend to avoid it anyway....mostly I have a bunch of inspired by myth or inspired by anime characters without actually completely copying said anime characters (usually I mishmash ideas from multiple sources when I'm creating any character anyway....myth being a very heavy draw on origin concept for me)

Quote:Yeah, but posting it on Saturday would mean he'd miss posting it on September 11th for Maximum Never Forget-ness.Why did you leave? Your rants were epic. Come back.
Also, this is silly. He would've posted it Saturday morning for maximum uptime!
As for why I left: if you are ranting at a brick wall, eventually you realize the brick wall isn't going to magically become sentient and point out you're right. -

Quote:Uh, what about Brian Clevinger's Atomic Robo or Mercedes Lackey's Invasion? There's precedent that as long as you don't use City of Heroes trademarks (like the 5th Column or Rikti) that there won't be much, if any, push back.If you expect to profit off of an original character or otherwise keep sole ownership of it, then it's best if you don't introduce it into City of Heroes. That's been the rule of thumb since day one.
That said, the clause in question primarily is there so that NCSoft doesn't have to pay you a license if you've published the character in another medium and they decide to use it in a story or promotional material or something. Remember how Ascendent showed up in an issue of the Top Cow comic and Amberleigh(?) and the others in the Blue King comics? I'm sure that those players were thrilled to get a guest shot and had no ideas about profiting from their appearances in the CoH comics, but that EULA clause insured that NCSoft didn't have to worry about it.
Basically, if you want to keep all possible rights to your character then keep it out of the game.
Edit: I found this quote from Atomic Robo's artist, since I definitely remember teaming with Atomic Robo on Pinnacle back in the day:
Quote:I had no idea at first what Robo should look like. Brian approached me with the concept, but no details. Oh and he had made a character in City of Heroes (long after coming up with the core Atomic Robo concept) and I had those to work with -but they were awful LOL -

Quote:Not to mention the fact that when this thread is nuked from orbit (since that's the only way to be sure), we will also lose Zwill's explanation./this.
Taser's "homeless man crying doom" analogy is really, really apt in this case.
Quite honestly, I'd have put some sort of statement like this into an announcement - "We understand there are some concerns, yadda yadda..." without bringing attention to someone's "Yet another I quit" post. -
Quote:Zwill, while I agree you said what needs to be said, I just would have done it in any of the non-Forum Rules breaking "I'm Quitting" threads that have popped up about the new EULA since September 1st instead of this one.I agree, and I choose where I post very carefully.
That being said, it's important that you, as the customer, know our response, especially in regards to something as sensitive as individual privacy. Westely, and anyone else who is expressing concern, is well within their rights to do so. Take it from someone who puts his real name, identity and livelihood out there for the whole world to see; having the safety of your privacy is very important. I understand this as a consumer, as a gamer and as a father and husband. -
And now that we lost Heroic Fetus, I can't wait to see the "Hello Guys"-to-"I'm Quitting" Post History of Socially Conscientious Zygote.

Quote:I'm going to assume by Westley's posting history that his meaning of "civil liberties" was the freedom of speech.Well, not really considering how broad those EULA terms are. If they actually took it literally and tried to enforce it, it looks to me like they are claiming the right to do everything from install a keylogger to steal your bank password, to remotely turn on your webcam and watch you walk around naked*. I don't really think they will, but the EULA really is written ridiculously broadly; so much so that NCSoft would be protested and sued out of existence if they actually tried to exploit it as written.
*Not that much of a joke; there was a school that did that with its take-home school issued laptop computers to "monitor the behavior" of the kids. It didn't turn out at all well when people found out.
Which this does, in no way, violate. Just like how you can say whatever you feel like and then get fired from a job over it, any company you do business with can terminate said contract if you say something they disagree with. There is no "Freedom of Speech" in a video game.
That is how he's misapplying it here. But you did give him a pretty good out to try to rationalize his misuse of the term by adding the paranoid webcam business he's sure to latch onto. -
Quote:So you ranted and overreacted to your friends on the phone. Then asked a crazy question. Then your friends nervously laughed at the situation because they had no other recourse on how to exit the conversation. And then you laughed, too, because, as we already established, crazy.
In all seriousness, I called all of my friends (who bought CoH with me) and told them what the new systems were going to be like. When I asked them if they wanted to play F2P, pay for VIP, or just quit... they laughed. And laughed. Because it was a rhetorical question, a joke if you like, and they all knew it. -
Quote:Zwill, I appreciate your reply, but I don't think it'll help. If anything, you just added this already toxic thread to the community digest. And stepping in...
We have no plans to introduce malicious, harmful or intrusive software to your computers. While we do remain vigilant in our fight against exploits (we will be introducing a new anti exploit measure, server side, come Issue 21, but more about that later) we also respect your right to privacy and will not gather any information without your explicit permission (i.e.; you agreeing to send us crash/bug/whatever feedback via the launcher functionality).
I understand your concerns, but please be assured, we are keeping our watchdog on a leash.
You can't try to rationalize with the barefoot homeless person on the street corner screaming that the End is Nigh. And if you hold a press conference to assure him that the End is very much down the line and not close at all, you are just giving him the attention his barefoot homelessness requires. -
Quote:You don't have a forum (completely with private sub forum after private sub forum after private sub forum) to stew in, though. If Unleashed is anything like it was (and there's no reason for it not to be, Westley is too busy creating new sub-private forums and weird voting rituals instead of generating actual discourse), then someone would have posted about the initial Beta rant thread where, indeed, the term "civil liberties" was misused there, too. He would have then seen it, saw red at even the mention of civil liberties being trampled, and started slowly crafting his LAST EPIC RAGE QUIT THREAD EVER (this week). To be fair, I didn't see any mention of this new EULA until Friday when someone posted about it in Player Questions. If I were prone to ragequitting over such things (or, indeed, at all), my timing probably would have been the same as Westley's (and I haven't been playing that much lately either, mostly due to burnout).
-
Here's the thing I'm wondering: how long has Westley been crafting this latest I'm RageQuitting thread.
Think about it: he hasn't played in months. When I posted on Unleashed before I learned better he barely talked about the game except to complain. News of the new EULA has been out since just before September 1st yet it took 10+ days for this thread to start.
How long was he planning just the right things to say? Obviously, not long enough since he misused the words "civil liberties" so mightily. How long was he planning just the right time to post it? The Sunday morning, guaranteeing him a full day of it being live, just days before he can continue having an account? Perfect!
The sad thing is I think Westley spent more time fuming and ranting and constructing this original post than any NC Soft lawyer did preparing the new EULA. And for what? For him to return and rage quit over something equally stupid two months down the line? -
Quote:Oh man, now they are going to kick me if they disagree with my statement that I liked Thor on Twitter?!?!?!Violating an NDA is a breach of contract. Same for showing disassembled game files; it's also against the DMCA. Stalking and harassing are illegal in and of themselves.
We don't need language in the EULA that would allow someone at NC to kick you because they don't like your political opinions.
You and your opinions (or even My Opinions and I) are not interesting enough to warrant any company hiring anyone on full time with benefits just to monitor what you (or I) say and like. -
It's not like there hasn't already been a big "Rant about how City of Heroes Sucks Now" thread over there for ages. And yet no one was banned here. Or a huge thread where they post a link to whiny/stupid forum posts and all laugh about it. Westley, I hope you posted a link to your own post there before you went all Nerd Rage and quit.

You lawled at what is basically the truth?
-
The -4 thing started as a joke and now is an institution for any TF my SG or I lead. People even keep tabs on who the last -4 was and if you manage to do it twice in a row, hell is to be paid via ridicule!
I think my record is being -4 5 times in a row while on my blaster. -
Here are the ones I use most in-game:
Team Grief - Assemble the Team or Team Recall
Prepare to be Griefed - I am most likely TPing you, probably while flying at the height ceiling.
In my own little cult of personality global channel, I've also giving most TFs their own nickname that everyone either figures out what I'm saying or ignores me:
Alicia Keyes Trial - Keyes Reactor
BAMF Trial - BAF
Stutter TF - Admiral Sutter Task Force
Famous Mort SF or the Kal Penn SF - Mortimer Kal Strike Force
Treespec - Any villain Thorn Tree respec, obviously
Freakspec - The middle hero Reactor Respec
No, Just No - Any Shadow Shard TF
And now I share with you the most inside joke-iest of all lingo:
-4 - First person who dies on any trial/TF gets this term of endearment. Named after an un-alpha slotted scrapper who joined us for a Tin Mage who managed to outlive everyone. -
Quote:Like Arcana said, if I start selling the game to my friends with features that are not available, it's my fault, not the devs.If they really want those old players back, then they ought to be implementing a plan to explain the new system in glowing, positive terms and to offer some kind of incentive to come back and try it out.
However you slice it, a lost sale is the fault of the salesman, not the customer who's doing his best to recruit other customers.
But onto your other point: do you really thing there won't be mass emails once VIP Headstart ends promoting this to anyone who has ever had a NC Soft Play Account? It will be promoted in glowing terms there with links to explanation of benefits most likely. If a player doesn't take the time to read those, I really can't fault the devs or the marketing team for that one.
And what other incentive is needed? "Come play this old game you used to play... FOR FREE" is a pretty damn good incentive. -
Let me play devil's advocate here: wouldn't it be better for all teams if more members of said teams had Return to Battle? Who cares how they earned it as long as they had it.
