You don't need to install the game so why would you need an iso at all?

you just need the game client.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Yes... I just need the game client, and a decent connection speed to NC's update servers. Yeah.. Right.

How often do we see folks on here complaining about 4K download speeds? Not to mention the game using some torrenting ports, so scumbag companies like Virgin Media drop the hammer of throttling on top of you...
  2. [ QUOTE ]
An ISO will require the space for the ISO and the space for the installed game files. A rar will require space for the rar and the extracted game files. Those sums are pretty much the same.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Actually, you're wrong there. A rar file ALSO requires the same amount of space in your windows temp folder, so you actually need double the space.
  3. [ QUOTE ]
But why a disk image rather than just a simple compressed archive?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Because ISO's are easier to handle than archive's. A disc image you can just mount and you're off. An archive you have to unzip/unrar, requiring a minimum of double the disc space, and for a 3.5GB+ file, that would take a fair while, especially on older machines.
  4. [ QUOTE ]
And how would downloading a disk image and installing from it be any more useful than just downloading the game files?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Well, for a start, it would open the possibility of mirrors hosting the ISO, and for people who seem to get very slow downloads via the updater, would probably mean they can download the game a lot faster.

...so burn the game client to a DvD then... it's only 3 gig

    [/ QUOTE ]

I have, but that's not the point! I'd like a proper, up to date, installer!! Besides, not everyone HAS a DVD burner, you know. Even in this day and age...

[/ QUOTE ]So what's that .iso going to be good for?

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Installing from a disc image.
  6. (( Ah, only just noticed the date of the original post. Oh well.

You know, this could be made to work if you wanted to still do it. You just have to make it affect only a small neigbourhood instead of the entire city. That way, our characters won't be there and you can do what you want with it. It's the citywide aspect of it that was the problem. ))

There will be a digital release for Europe in the near future.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Given that the only difference between the US and EU client is a .eu. stuck into the EU Updater could people order the US version and just change the CoHUpdater.exe file themselves and hey presto a fully working EU i14 MA Edition box set?

    [/ QUOTE ]

I doubt it. They tend to use different codes for US/EU versions, so the code would likely only work in the US version.

There will be a digital release for Europe in the near future.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Is that just going to take the form of a game code with 30 days time, or is their a chance of a fully up to date game ISO becoming available for download?

TBH, I don't really care about the goodies... What I badly want is a new up to date game disc!
  10. (( What about heroes with super-hearing? This sort of thing would be REALLY nasty for such... Always a BAD idea to run plot that has city-wide effects.))

That was added in Open Beta. I assume to deal with exactly this sort of unpredicability in controlling spawns.

Added the same day they took the University Basement away from me *sobs*

    I liked that map!!

    [/ QUOTE ]

Guess I'm going blind then. Mind you... I didn't use it much once it went open as I wanted to leave SOMEthing for me to play with in live, and since then I've kinda been on a break from the game. Only went in long enough to fix the errors when I transferred the arc over, and then quickly publish it...
  15. Didn't get chance to go into CoH last night, so couldn't make adjustments to see what's what, but I accept what's been posted since.

However, just wanted to point out.. When I wrote and published the arc, the MA editor did NOT tell you how many spawn points were in each map section. Now that it does do that, it's a LOT easier to setup spawns.
  16. [ QUOTE ]

Similarly if you've a map with 5 bosses and an AV you cannot say "That should work with every map available", it's impractical (I'd hate to see it on University Basement for example )

    [/ QUOTE ]

But that's the point. The simple fact of being able to place more bosses than there are spawn points IS a bug. It either should give you an error, or it shouldn't allow you to place that many, yet it does.

Take my Return to Disco arc. I use that old Hellion "Rave" map, similar to the old PDP map. On it I have 1 ally, 3 bosses (including the AV), and 2 ambushes. According to the map definition, I should be well within the limits for that map, right?

So, I put my Ally at the front, and a boss at the front, middle and back (AV at the back). The first boss is meant to spawn on the Ally, and each boss has an ambush.

So why does my Ally spawn at the back, and my AV is regularly appearing in the middle? Why does the first boss, triggered to spawn on the Ally completion, appear at a random position on the map, and rarely actually comes to get you? I had to go looking for him!

Simple, it's a bug; either in the map, or in the MA itself. It doesn't really matter which, all that matters is that it's a bug. A very annoying bug, and a bug that effects other missions I'm working on too.

If a map has 2 front, 2 middle, and 2 back spawn points I can use, then on attempting to use a third, I should get an error telling me so, and it shouldn't allow me to publish or test that mission.
  17. [ QUOTE ]
How many maps are there in total? Hundreds? And you think it'd only take a few days? Seriously?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Easily only a couple of days. It's not every map we're talking about you know, it seems to only affect the unique ones, and there really aren't that many; but even with having to check every single map, it's unlikely to take more than 10 minutes each. They don't have to create missions and try them, you know. They just need to lookup the data for the map and see if the F/M/B has been defined.

    [ QUOTE ]

If a map / objective combo doesn't work properly it's down to the Mission Designer to spot and fix it (reorder the objectives, cut down objectives or switch to another map). Maps getting pulled because some objectives work oddly on them isn't the way to go (neither is the map "useless" because it fails to work with your combination of objectives).

    [/ QUOTE ]

I disagree. If a map/objective combo isn't working, then that map/objective combo shouldn't be available. If it's available for me to use, then it should WORK. If it doesn't work, then it's bugged.
  18. [ QUOTE ]
...which would have pushed back issue 14 to 2010.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I very much doubt it would take more than a couple of days, actually. It's just that it would be a really crappy job for whoever had to do it, so isn't going to be at the top of anyone's list to get done. I allocate [censored] jobs like this to my staff regularly, and they're ALWAYS put at the back of their work list. It just the way things like that happen.

Unfortunately, it makes the MA look broken, so should really have been given a high priority, IMO.
  19. [ QUOTE ]
Technically, it's not the MA that's broken, it's just quite a lot of the maps.

Note that the generic maps generally work fine with regard to F/M/B. It's the maps that where originally intended for one specific mission that the mappers didn't really bother with the distinction.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You would think that, as part of creating the MA, they'd have gone through the maps and made sure spawn zones were setup correctly... This issue effectively makes a LOT of these "custom" maps useless for anything other than random spawn positioning...
  20. [ QUOTE ]
but there is now information about that on the map select page.

    [/ QUOTE ]

There is? I didn't notice that the other day...

    Umm, yeah.. That...
  22. IMO, the map spawning is buggered anyway, at least as far as the Front/Middle/Back positioning is concerned. It's totally messed up my Return of Disco arc as the AV keeps spawning in front of all the other bosses on the final mission, when she's clearly set at BACK, and the others are either FRONT or MIDDLE.

It's a mess and it needs fixing. IMO, the MA shouldn't have gone out live with this still broken. We've been telling them it was broken since closed beta...

In never used too.. In it's first year or so, it was a vibrant spot where plots DID regularly crop up and get played out, at least in in part, and it was a LOT of fun. People would be there regularly until 2am and rarely were we bored. It's only in the last couple of years where it's become a lap sitting borefest with nothing of any substance happening.
