Quote:Awesome advice and tips, this really hekps me understand, with you and memphis and few others im really feel like Im learning a lot even at times I get memory lapse or suddenly get confused, so il have to keep comming back to your all advice and help so I have you all to fall back on if I don't remember anythingI very often work out a build for my character as I'm playing him, rather than before. So I end up taking powers to see what I enjoy and what works, and then when I get to 50 (or sometimes a little before), I run one of the respec trials and pick new powers and slotting for a final version (at least until the developers change something!).
As you level, you can just use whatever enhancements (TO/DO/SOs) you get from missions and from doing trials and events with other players in your powers. It's best if you can keep a good balance of at least one damage, at least one accuracy, at least one recharge reduction and at least one endurance reduction enhancement in each of your attack powers. If you feel like taking the time to do it, you can make "basic" IOs of those things, which have the advantage of not needing to be replaced.
So it's a good idea to put four slots into each of your attack powers while you're levelling. At high levels or at level 50, you'll change it.
For other click powers, like heals or controls, you'll want the same things except instead of damage you'll enhance whatever the power is for (healing, immobilization, or whatever). For toggle powers, you don't need recharge reduction or accuracy (usually), but you'll want to enhance their primary effect and probably put more endurance reduction into them.
So three or four slots for your other powers is also good. If the power doesn't take most kinds of Enhancements (for example, an auto power that gives you status effect resistances), you can skip it. For some click powers you may only need two slots, one for recharge and one for whatever the main effect of the power is (like a heal). Again, you'll change all this at 50.
I'm quite good at making melee (Stalker, Tanker, Brute and Scrapper) builds, and I can offer advice on other character builds as well. I'd like to spend more time on the Build Forum helping people, but like you said, it's pretty exhausting to make a build, and lots of people want them. To be honest, it's probably better to post in the forum of the specific archetype you're working on with your own build -- even if you think it's not very good -- asking for feedback. Some people will make fun of you, which is frustrating, but that's just how forums go.
As far as suggestions for a new character, you could always try more Corruptors; Sonic/Sonic and Dark/Dark (or a mix of Dark or Sonic with something else) are pretty straightforward and fun. I also like the Beam Rifle attack set a lot; you could even give a Defender a try for a Force Fields/Beam Rifle character. If you want to try something pretty different, you might enjoy playing a Scrapper or a Stalker. They're a bit easier to use with either the Willpower defensive set or one of the Defense-based sets (Super Reflexes, Energy Aura, Ice Armor [stalker only], Ninjitsu [stalker only], or Shield Defense [scrapper only]). Just about any of the primaries work well, although I've found Katana/Ninja Blade, Dark Melee, and Mace to be some of the most straightforward to play. -
Quote:I solo 95% time, my interest is brutes, scrappers, corruptors and controllers bt controllers for if i decide to grp, i have checjk others builds but problem i run into is there builds is IO's plus which does not help me when im trying ot make a leveling build using TO-DO-SO's so seeing those builds frm others that is showing IO's+ does me no good at all couse i cannot understand how to make them into a leveling build of what actually goes into the slots while your leveling up, i dont need lvl 50 builds with IO's and sets i dont see how that heps any new player, returning player or person like me with brain damage there is somethings i just cannot understand and yes i read thru all the sites till i cant stand reading them anymore lol but ill take yur advice and also ill wrk on my own builds since no one bothers to make a New Player Guide to leveling up In CoH before IO's ect... so ill do as you suggested build as i go trial and error if something does not work then change that slot out till i fnd what wrks for that skill nd go down my build that way, tyvmI don't know what your playstyle is. Whatever it is, I suggest you look through the forums for people that are looking for critiques of their builds.
Generally, players with more experience will post a build that they think is better than the original one that was posted.
If you know how, cut and paste the data chunk into mids', and then look at all the enhancements you'll need. Then, roll /create a new toon that will be built like the one you just copied. Feel free to change out travel powers.
On powersets that have been out a little while, like Titan Weapons, I looked over several. I know a little about mids' and am somewhat familiar with the different sets available, so I was able to make some adjustments that weren't quite so pricy, but still be effective.
Since you are still figuring things out, I see no problem in you just trying a fire/fire brute -- or Street Justice/Electric Armor brute.
Once these toons hit level 28 and 30 respectively (which is not that hard to do) they really shine. (Any fire brute once they get burn is gonna shine bright!)
Don't use the search function in the forums. Use google and add + CoH to whatever you're looking for. The forum search engine has always been ...not very user friendly for me. Your experience may differ, however.
That's my best free advice for you. Look for builds posted by Nemu. A wizard with builds. Hyperstrike has a very sturdy, inexpensive invuln tank somewhere in these forums.
If you decide to make a fire tank, check out some of the fire tank guides to get an overview.
Read stuff until you just can't stand it. Then play the toon. Don't go to AE and get powerleveled. Even if leveling is slow for you - grind it out and try different attack chains. Make a mental note of what works well and what doesn't. If your endurance is sagging - check your stamina and see how it's slotted. Make sure you have an end reducer in your heavier attacks, at least until you get SOs at 25 or IOs at level 30. Also, don't expect to roll at +4/8 until you get your defense and resistances at a decent level. What's a decent level? I can't say - will depend on what you roll. -
Tyvm for fixing up my typing, since i have brain damage i have hard enough time typing everything i want to say let alone try to space, paragraphs ect... Which i cannot understand to do very well or not at all,It took me 2 hours just to type all that and for the above poster MisterD, critiques someone's typing when they have brain damage is very rude person. But again tyvm for fixing my typing errors
-
I just cant freaking figure out how to build any of the classes, making builds just plain sucks to me, one day i think i understand what is going on andmi make m build ect.. BUT then Most days when i make my builds, i get stumped when i hover over the slots of my skills an it says i can slot this or this or this then i spend hours trying figure out what do, what i want to put in that slot that will give me the best benefit that will get me the best bang of that slot, i then make the build BUT too embarrassed to post the build, ROFL, oh i wish to god there was a CoH Dummies guide to making a leveling build that deals with TO, DO and SO's before you spend hours of not playing the game cause you cant figure out the IO's for your slots before lvl 50 and your sitting there for hours when you can be in the game playing, sometimes my brain damage makes me feel so stupid, ROFL, thankfully i have my kin/rad defender and rad/kin corruptor builds done with the help of others, the corruptor is fun my defender is alright but i get bored with him alot, i like to try a lot of other classes, i just wish i knew how to build properly and need to figure out what would be very fun. I think ill give up on the mastermind class, im getting a major headache tying to build one on mids ROFL, i want something really fun but easy to play, i also have my fire/storm corruptor which is fun but heck he died more than i can count so he is being shelved in the closet, LOL. So my search of the forums goes on till i find or figure out what be a fun easy class to play solo/team. I do try my hardest to make my builds but when im done making the build and i look it over im too embarrassed to post the build and get it critiqued lol
Well thats my rant for the day LOL -
Quote:ok cool, tvmI can't give much advice on slotting /Time. My Beasts/Time Mastermind is only level 18, and appears to be skipping Enhancements until SOs are available. I put a fair amount of slots into Temporal Mending (the heal), so look to slot that up early. I skipped Temporal Selection, probably judging that until I got better pets it wouldn't be worth it.
I'm also taking all the powers in Beasts/, mostly because they're a lot of fun. For Robotics/, I'd skip Photon Grenade and Repair, and either take Temporal Selection, or dip into the Leadership pool. I didn't take a movement power, you'll probably have to add one. -
Quote:aye i was thinking same thing on some attacks early on, tyvmFor early levels though, take the attacks, at least two, or three for beasts and maybe demons. Before you have all your pets, those attacks do a significant percent of your damage, and should not be avoided. Also, with only a few pets to command, you might be pretty bored unless you have a few attacks to play with.
Note that /Time is a little busy, but not too bad. I'd take the first two attacks and see if you'd like to add more to your attack chain.
Personal opinion: Repair is crappy, and /Time has a much better heal. Skip Repair, use the one in /Time. -
nothing to see on this post no longer, have a great day

Ok that al makes sense to me, now i have a better understanding i i can work my way thru on my own build, thank you sooo much:0

I wanted to ask for one more help please, i found this Mastermind Bots/Time Build but i need to have it redone into SO's slotting, i knows everyone here been helping me out a lot and i'm beginning to understand the common Io's but still haven't figured out how to switch a IO build to a SO build I posted this in MM site but since i been getting a lot f help here i thought i post the build here too and see if i can get the build into an SO build, tyvm if anyone can do this

Quote:k cool tyvmThe easiest way to go about IOs is to use the common ones.
They are just like SOs, but you will never outlevel them.
At level 30 they are better than SOs because the enhancement is comparable, and you don't ever have to replace them unless you want to.
Slotting Set IOs for bonuses can come later, or not at all if you like, but I do recommend slotting the common IOs instead of SOs at around level 27. -
TYVM Everyone, you all breaking down the stuff im having hard time understanding is now making sense, this si awesome, thank you sooo much
-
Quote:ah ok now i understand tyvmI agree that SOs are perfectly valid, especially as you are getting back into the game and primarily soloing. I recommend all newer players work through the game on DO/SOs only the first time through just to eliminate one more bit of complexity. So, to answer your original question in detail:
Yes, you need to refresh them periodically. Here is my DO/SO schedule:
12 - Go to the origin specific store in Skyway, Steel Canyon, or Cap au Diable and buy level 15 DOs.
18 - Go back to that same store and refresh your DOs with level 20s. Note that I wait until 18 so that I can "combine" them with the 15s and have a 75% chance to get an extra level (denoted by "20+").
22 - Go to the origin specific store in Talos, Independence Port, or Sharkhead and buy level 25 SOs. You can't combine DOs and SOs, so just replace them at 22.
28 - Go back to that same store and refresh your SOs with level 30s. See the combine note above. Same applies here. I also go ahead and buy all the 30s I will need for leveling until 31 so I don't have to return each level.
33 - Go to the origin specific store in Brickstown*, Founders Falls*, St. Martial; or the vendor in Cimerora, Midnight Club, or Rikti War Zone. Refresh with 35s; buy future needs through 36.
*The hero side enhancement contacts in these zones require you to complete a mission for them before you can buy from them.
38 - Go to the origin specific store in Brickstown*, Founders Falls*, St. Martial; or the vendor in Cimerora, Midnight Club, or Rikti War Zone. Refresh with 40s; buy future needs through 41.
43 - Go to Ghost Falcon store in Peregrine Island*, Elite Quartermaster in Grandville, or the vendor in Cimerora, Midnight Club, or Rikti War Zone. Refresh with 45s; buy future needs through 46.
48 - Go to Ghost Falcon store in Peregrine Island*, Elite Quartermaster in Grandville, or the vendor in Cimerora, Midnight Club, or Rikti War Zone. Refresh with 50s; buy enhs you'll need for 49 and 50 too.
Also, feel free to combine any dropped enhancements that match slotted ones as you go.
No, no button; but as others have noted; you can simplly replace your SOs with the analogous form of Common IO and get (most of the time) slightly better performance that doesn't have to be refreshed. -
-
Quote:Ok cool, i understand EXCEPT for one thing, i see you have taunt slots all the same, i thought the rule from ED no more than 3 of same type OR does this not count towards IO's or IO SetsEven though it sounds like you're going the route of SOs and common IOs (still a good way to get used to it,) I wanted to go back to this bit for you.
Thing 1 to remember - Set IOs (any invented IO, really) won't expire. It'll be red when you can't use it, white when you can.
Thing 2: The game will tell you what you can slot. Grabbed some shots from my Dark/SS tank to illustrate.
To find out what a power will take - hover over it. You'll get a popup like so:
(... and as an aside, you can see I'm using a mixture of set IOs, common IOs (the hexagonal shaped) and SOs (this one's tech, so it's the gears.)
Looking at the power information, you'll see two things:
ALLOWED ENHANCEMENTS - for this, range, recharge, accuracy, taunt. These are the SOs or common IOs this will take - if you try to stick a Damage SO or (common) IO in here, the slots will grey out, another indicator you can't slot this.
ALLOWED SET CATEGORIES: This tells you what *type* of sets this can take. In this case, Taunt can only take Taunt *sets* (and they're broken down in the auction house if you want to look through.) Some can only take one, like this, others can take multiple (for instance, a Snipe could have Ranged damage, Snipe, and - say - Knockback sets as valid for the power.)
So how do you know the category if you didn't just buy it at wentworths/the black market, where they're broken down by category? Simple. You look at the recipe itself (the IO will show you this, too. The example below uses an IO.)
This is the Recharge/Accuracy dual IO from the Perfect Zinger set. Going down the display, it gives you:
Set name and IO (Perfect Zinger, Recharge/Accuracy)
Description of what it does.
THe full set *listing* (Set name, and how many are in the set.)
The set *category* (which is what you're interested in - it's a Taunt set)
And the bonuses for having more than one of the same set in the same power.
Having multiple pieces in different powers don't give the set bonus (think of it as a perk for "filling up" a power.) And it will lead to different slotting than your SOs and common IOs. For instance, on SOs I'd barely slot Taunt, but if I want the recharge or defense from this, I'd add more slots here.
There's more to go into with these, but they go well past the scope of your prior confusion. Hopefully this helps for if or when you do decide to dig into these. -
Quote:Ok cool, I'll remember that, tyvmIf you want to go for sets, don't worry too much about cruching the numbers, if that confuses you. Just pick a power with 5 or 6 slots, then pick a set appropriate to that power and put one of each type of enhancement from that set in that power. No, that isn't optimum, but it's easy to understand and will give you delicious bonuses to make your character more powerful. Later on, you can try to learn about the merits of different individual bonuses and stuff, but that should do to get you started.
-
Quote:Awesome I can go the route of common IO's. One question I only went to went worthy once, willi be able to buy my IO's right off the bat or will I have to bid and wait for how ever long that may take lol ? I rather be able to buy them when I want the than wait on bid times ect..Well here's something to maybe help clear up your confusion:
There are TWO types of "IO"s. "Basic" and "Set". The "Set" ones can be confusing, because they have different categories and effects and such. However, the "basic" ones are just like SOs: They come in Damage, Accuracy, End reduction... just like SOs.
Basic IOs function like SOs, except: They're a little more powerful, they can be used by ANY origin, and they never expire. They'll always be at a given level, but they'll stay usable 5, 10, 15 levels after you've "out leveled" them (where an SO stops working 3 levels after its native level)
If you don't want to MAKE IOs, you can go and BUY them!
If you look on the Auction house (Wentworth's blue side, Black market trucks redside), go under Crafted Enhancements -> Other, and you'll see pre-made Basic IOs for sale. They're expensive, but since they never degrade or expire, it beats the trouble of buying new enhancements every 5 levels. At least, in my opinion.
And btw your help is very grateful, just as there's above you on this post.

Quote:Tyvm this helps a lot, this I can understand, most of it, till I get back in game tomorrow and head to university and follow your steps. This HUGE help.Grouchybeast is right - the game is completely playable on SOs alone. If you'd like to play with IOs a little bit to get a feel for them, without doing anything too complex, give this a try:
1- As you play, you'll get salvage drops. Once your Salvage inventory is full, go to the University, and click on one of the tables.
2- Click the button in the bottom right corner of the window, I think it says "Hide recipes". In the menu that shows up, make sure "Unowned" is unselected (black dot) and "Missing Ingredients" is checked (colored dot). Sorry if the names are wrong, I'm not at my computer. They should be close enough for you to find the right things.
3- If the "Inventions" bar stays on the list, ignore it. For all the rest of the bars, click any that have the name of SOs that you need (Accuracy, damage, etc).
4- If there's a blue number beside an item, you already have the recipe. If it's level 25 or higher, click that one and click the Craft button (IOs below 25 are weaker than SOs). If none of them have a blue number, click the highest level one that you can slot (Same rule as SOs, if it's more than +3, you can't slot it yet), click Buy, and then click Craft.
5- Slot the IO you just created over an SO of the same type.
6- Repeat the above until there's nothing you want/need left on the list.
7- Sell any recipes and salvage you have left at Wentworths or a store (your choice, some items can be VERY valuable at Wentworths, but that's another complex area), and start over the next time your Salvage is full.
This way, you're not doing any complex builds - your Common IOs are just like SOs, but maybe a bit stronger, and they never expire. When I'm playing a character that I don't have a build plan for, that's how I slot them, so that I don't need to make as many trips to the SO stores.
Just remember, any IO named "Invention: (type)" is an SO that anyone can use and doesn't expire, and you'll be OK.
Forget about sets. They add a level of difficulty to the game that can be completely ignored until you're ready to deal with them.
And if my suggestion above is still too much for you, forget it too. Single Origin enhancements will still get you to 50 and beyond - I know people doing Incarnate Trials on SO builds.
One thing to add to the above though: When you're clearing out your recipes, if you see one with a purple name, sell it at Wentworth's, not to a store! Purples always sell for more at WW than a vendor will give you, and it's unlikely you'll get less than a few million. Some will sell for hundreds of millions.
Thank You Sooo Much,I apprise this a lot -
Oh btw here is another build i'm working on since i have a kin/rad def from the old days , someone mentioned i should try the reverse of it, a corruptor Rad/Kin build and i was told there a strong solid solo and team combo so a sweet girl name Aurora_Girl proposed this build to me to try and so far i'm having a lot of fun with it and fun with the Fire/Storm Corruptor as well, still haven't figured out which of the two fire/storm builds is the best but after looking them both over and over and over lol they both seem very great, so ill do both builds lol

Quote:Honestly, there is absolutely no reason at all that you can't keep right on playing the game with SOs and never worry about any kind of IOs at all. I see plenty of people in game who are still using SOs and getting along just fine. The IO system is an optional extra, and it's deliberately complicated. It's really a kind of time-sink added to the game so that people who find it fun can play around with it, and people who don't find it fun can just ignore it.
If you really want to try to get into it, then I'm sure that people will be happy to try different ways of explaining the system until we can hit on something that works for you. But first of all, maybe it would be better to just play the game with SOs for a while until you're completely comfortable and back in the groove? Then you can see if you feel like it's still something you want to try.
That sounds 100% agreeable to me, i fgure i keepplaying till lvl 50 with SO's then ill find someone to help me step by step or soemting t help me understand the IO's and work with me with my builds, dont get me wrong im all fr new changes in an MMO if there were no new changes then the MMO be gone, closed down BUT at this time im m having fun with SO's just like old days stuff i remember, the two builds up above this post
, i having doing Build 1 atm see hw it is up to lvl 50 then will try build 2 and a seet grl gave me a very nice Rad/Kin corruptor build which i love very much cause i have a kin/rad defender from old days but im tired of defenders lol. BUT yes, what you said hits t right on the nose and thats what ill do is keep at it way im doing with SO's then at lvl 50 ill worry about IO's and then ask someone for personal assistance in changing my builds, switching things around and how to understand doing IO's. and placing them in the right slots ect...
tyvm i appreciate this a lotim very happy now
-
I did that and still cant comprehend it all, making the IO"s and then figureing up ok if this one io has 2 or 3 ehcnaers tied into 1 IO then how do i know what slot it goes in or when t add it t the slots ect,,, i CANNOT understand, all im doing at this point is getting fustrated cause my stupid brain wont let me understand this stuff, i just shut the game down for the night and come back monday and try again to play this game best way of i know how or just close the game and go find another mmo to play, i play asherons call and daoc for last 10 yrs i also playing lord of the rings and D&D onlne aand everquest those mmo's i have np understanding have many classes in each mmo with level capped out, with best gear in game, i really hate to see this mmo go bye bye to me, this is my most favorite mmo since beta to 2004. but if i cant figure this io ect.. stuff out or play this with SO builds succefuly as i did in 2004, then the game not meant for me anymore and ill forward all the cash that was donated to me to someone and say my goodbyes
-
Here are my two builds which i havent decided which is best build, but if someone lke to share some light n which is better and stronger for a solo player and would like ot change the build nto IO or whatever is i can get that is better than SO's then our free t go for it if someone changes my build just please tell me where i can buy the IO's or whatever enhancers i need to buy, i currently play on Freedom instead of pinnacle, cause an old time friend plays occasionaly on freedom and my ID handle is @Krysila if anyone need to send me a mail about anything.

this is no excuse but i have brain damage and it is causing me NOT to comprehend of understanding IO's which is keeping me on how to make MY OWN builds, some of the most simplest things of this game like the O's ect.. plp can aunderstand BUT i cannt understand, i have tried reading every site every linked sent to me to read up on about IO's and ED ect.. the only thng i understand is on the ED part is that we no longer need more than 3 slots of same type in the build, example of my understanding is say we have in 1) Flares i only need to slot it wth 3 damage enhancers than the olds days we could 6 slot them, anything over 3 sots of that same type is now a waste,, that i do understand. I just cannot undrstand how to do the IO"s , how to slot all my slots with IO"s ect... i CANNOT comprehend how its done, i never thought i come back to the greatest MMO i fell in love with since beta to 2004 then had to leave the game due to my brain damage getting worse and now im making my return and it seems like from everyone well if you dont IO your builds then your crap, no good for anyone, well i play 95% time solo if i need help with a mission i cant cmplete them i ask for help, i mean i can link my BUILD and ask some one to change my build to an IO build, BUT when i run into problems asking plp this kind of stuff in games, i get the same thing over and over " i suppose yu want me to play your character too" crap like that, i play 4 ther mmo's besides this and im maxed out with all classes and best gear ect,, thats what may me decide i come back to CoH, my most favorite MMO but now it just seems like im not going t be able to play this game, i have 2 choices i play tis game using SO's or ask someone to redo my build to an IO build but i will need t kw where t by them since i cannot understand the crafting again due to my brain damage, like i said this is no excuse bt this is someting i have to live with rest of my life, someting i cna undrstand and other thngs no matter how muchi read over and over and over or d over and over ill never understand it, jus way life s for me, so i either keep playing my build to 50 using SO's and the ED 3 rule same slot deal or ask someone to change my build(which turns ALOT of plp off) to an IO build and then i need to know where to g buy the IO's ect.... or i just leave the game and say farewel to CoH which i realy hate to do but ....

aye thats what i thought and say i hit lvl 30 do i still go to those two store to buy the lvl 30 SO's? ect.... every 5 levels or less if combineing?
OR can you please give me all the places i need to go for example every 5 levels to buy my SO's till lvl 50, if not asking to much? -
Quote:i been out if game since 2004, i thought when oyu reach lvl 22 and go to the lvl 20+ zones and go to your origin store, which im science so i go science store the hhighest level enhancers are the SO's i buy, did they change thngs?errr.. what stores? I thought Yin's Market was the only place that sold 'off level' SO's. The normal stores only carry regular increments of 5 (25, 30, 35, etc).
if not then where is yins market to get the real SO's t put in all my slots??
