  1. The best way I can imagine random outbursts that don't just look sorta cornily "Lookit me, ma, I'm kerrraaaazy!" is if the character keeps on having his absorbed personalities rise to the surface for a moment or two to give their opinion on situations.

Something like... off the top of my head,
SuperPerson: "Okay, there are eight Malta gunslingers in there, and just the two of us."
PotentialWrecks: "Alright, I'll take the ones on the left. I'll take them all. Let's wait for them to split up. Run away! Okay, I'm going in, back me up!" *goes*
  2. Personally, I think if it's as amazingly intelligent as you say, it should have the grasp of what human interaction should be like, but from a completely cold and clinical standpoint. Like a classic sociopath, it should queue up emotions as is appropriate, but also be able to drop them in the blink of an eye.
Laughter should be short and false, with no lead-up or tailing off, and that sort of thing.

As for the insanity.. I'm not sure that word can be applied to a creature so very different from human as the Wrecks is. Certainly, it might behave irrationally from a human perspective, but... *shrug* It's something completely different than human.
  3. I could see more justification for Dominators to be melee than Controllers or Defenders... seeing as they at least have SOME melee attacks.

Edit: And I guess the same rationalisation could work for the Kheldians and the Arachnos folks...
  4. I really hate to be pessimistic but... nothing will change, if that's what the characters in charge want to effect. Why would I set a character of mine up for such a disappointment? I torture them enough on my own without that extra sense of impotence.

We have characters in City of Heroes who are angels. Some are devils. Some are fallen angels. Now these are all what I'd categorize as "biblical" figures; or at least related to the common definition of god, heaven, and hell...

Now what happens if one of these characters interacts with an atheist? Wouldn't it make the atheist simply a dumb, dense non-believer? Cause wouldn't an angel that has descended from heavens be living counter-proof to a potential atheist character's philosophy?

Personally, I try to solve that dilemma by simply making my "demonic" characters be "aliens" from another "dimension" that looks very close to what "humans" consider "hell" or some other place that is populated with beings that share many traits with "common definitions" of "demons" and "angels". Same for angelic characters. But I've never played an angel.

Just something I thought I should share. Feel free to discuss the dilemma!
The way I respond to that is to go the Shakespeare route.. that is, "there is more in heaven and earth that is dreampt of in your philosophy." Certainly, you can have demonic-esque and angel-oid creatures running around, but to instantly presume that this means the creature in charge of them is the ultimate arbiter of the universe is a bit of a leap. The point being that the atheist refuses to recognise the authority of the demonic or angelic creatures as proof of the deity in that mythology.

After all, if you can have the mad god Lanaruu seen with tangible proof ("I punched him in the face!") then clearly YHVH cannot be the one true god. At best, they're extraplanar beings with powers beyond human comprehension. But that doesn't make them the ultimate beings of the universe.
  6. 3xYes.

I'd say more, but I'm following written instructions like a good surveyee.
  7. I was gonna make a Lost-inspired character, but then I couldn't think of a cohesive narrative backstory for it, nor any real direction for the story to go. Then I thought "screw it" and just made out that they'd been dead all along. And we shall never speak of it again.
  8. Yes, but if he'd just said "whalers" instead of "Wailers" it wouldn't be a pun anymore.

    New Player

To be fair, Lasher DID say it'd get their attention, he just didn't say in what capacity...

    Welcome aboard, Dspektz!

    Why?

Wow... some of the people in this thread have had some REALLY bad experiences, huh?

Still, at least them ignoring you is no great loss. I wouldn't want someone that rigid and rules-lawyery in my circle of friends, that's for sure.
  12. You've had, like, three posts in a row with no comments from the outside world, so I just wanted to go "YAY HEROID COMIC." I've been reading it off-and-on as and when I remember (I don't check the official forums as much as I used to) and always make sure to catch up with the goings on of the Alternate Rock.
  13. Not from landing alone, but if you have a PBAoE damage field on and you're of sufficient level, I imagine that'd achieve the same basic visual effect.

Also, welcome back to the game, Drinkslinger. Have fun with all the new shinies!

I also have a particularly unpleasant villainous character that makes me fall into the "I'm RPing a jerk, I'm not one in real life honest" camp, and I've found a few things that really help in playing smoothly.
Firstly, only unleash their worst excesses with groups of people that know you and know it's just the character from other characters you've played not being like that, or who know you OOC.
Secondly, if you suspect people are becoming uncomfortable with your character, send them a tell or OOC message confirming that they're okay with this stuff, that it's just IC and none of it is meant OOC.
And thirdly, be prepared to lose sometimes. People love to beat the bad guy.

    Why?

So... just throwing this out there, pretty divorced from the situation myself because I've not been to the Pocket D for a while, but...

Is it possible that the people are roleplaying hate-filled bigots? I mean, the old "I'm roleplaying a jerk so don't treat me like a jerk" excuse is old and tired, but some people roleplay jerks expecting to be treated, ICly, as jerks because antagonists make good RP experiences.

Dr. Peter Venkman: This city is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions.
Mayor: What do you mean, "biblical"?
Dr Ray Stantz: What he means is Old Testament, Mr. Mayor, real wrath of God type stuff.
    Dr. Peter Venkman: Exactly.

    RP curiosity...

In regards to RP-derailing healing powers... or any power, for that matter... the good RPer has one very, very powerful phrase in their arsenal.

    "Tries to."

That way you put the result of the RP'ed action on the RP scenario's co-ordinator.

Lets take the example of the blind person being healed by an empath.

Empath Y: Okay, this might feel wierd.
Empath Y tries to reconstruct Blindgal's damaged corneas.

At this point, Blindgal can decide what's best for her character's story... whether she SHOULD be healed, or whether there's a curse on her eyeballs to forever be a lame duck, or that perhaps there just isn't enough remaining healthy tissue to form a working cornea even with magical healing powers. Perhaps several treatments over a number of months might work, though!

Tries to. It's a powerful phrase.

But the precedent has been set. I'm not saying it won't take a LOT of creative bull****ing, but the precedent HAS been set.

I could get onto a little mini-rant about how Wonder Woman was basically the writer's cover for playing out his bondage fantasies in a comic book, but I feel that may be a discussion for a different time or thread.

There've been some fantastic characters showcased in this thread! I really need to get off my butt and post one or two of my own. Except I'm going on holiday in a bout twelve hours.

    RP curiosity...

Firstly, what AlwaysAPrice said. But with a little elaboration from me because I can't keep my trap shut.

If the player, OOCly, is not aware of the theme of the group then the leaders should take the player to one side and have a quiet chat of the "are you sure this group is a good fit for you now you know X, Y and Z?" If problems persist after that, then I'd recommend a good verbal dressing-down and (possibly if the player's attitude warrants it) the door.
If the player IS aware OOCly of the theme of the group but does this anyway without it being part of an IC plot device and what have you, then skip stage one, go straight to "if problems persist."

If this is an IC stunt, then another conversation may be in order, depending on how other members of the group are taking it. If they're enjoying the plot and all, no problem, but people have different tolerances for different things. It may be necessary to offer suggestions about who to involve deeply in the plot, and who to let keep their distance. It may even be someone the player wanted to be integral to the plot but... tough luck if they don't like the subject matter. Every player has the right to choose whether to get involved in a plot or not, and the event organizer dude will just have to find a work around. And probably be told that relying a plot on one person is kinda unfun for all the others present. (I learned this the trainwreck way early on in my CoH career. *Hangs head*)

And finally, definitely still with AlwaysAPrice on the In Character Consequences.
    _______
As an aside, referring to the medcom issue... it's kind of a soft god-mod for me, in that if the story requires it to work, it'll work. If not, well, it won't. There is precedent for that in CoH/V, after all. Random Newspaper Mission Dudes will say that piece of dialogue that goes something like "So this guy was mouthing off to Ghost Widow and she puts her hand through his chest. Guy just dies. No mediport, nothing. Creepiest thing I ever saw." So there's room for discriminating fudging of the rules.
And of course, it can lead to some very ingenious ways to take a character out of action without actually making the medport kick in. Or if it does, it being useless, etcetera.

    Post a Character

Though I imagine there probably ARE a few characters in the comic-book world where that seems to be their only power...

After all, there's one thing that will be guaranteed to sell comic books, and that's proven, time and time again, to be barely-clad female anatomy.
  22. Well, first off, I'm sorry you took offence, and yes, in retrospect my suggestion to change SG colours was rather misguided. Especially seeing as the red white and blue of the British flag can easily be mistaken for the red white and blue of the US flag.

But let me make it clear, I wasn't trying to actively change your SG from the outside. In fact, I was very dismissive of my own opinions within my own post. I said quite clearly "feel free to disregard my opinions to any degree" so when you say "I'm surprised you think I'd even care," then I feel somehow.. perversely let down. I literally said "I have no expectations of your caring or not caring."

It was meant to be purely an outsider perspective and (hopefully) constructive criticism. Admittedly, some of it was ill-conceived. Still, no reason to bite my head off.

I must admit, its largely due to my annoyance of anything outside of Britain that immediately assumes that the crown has any power in... well, anything. Outside sources creating British organisations assume for some reason that the royal family have a hand in the day-to-day running of things like MI6, which is, of course, entirely erroneous. Its a trope I see in the popular media that makes me bristle, and unfortunately your SG had enough of the "warning markers" (for want of a better term) to make me worry.

For all I know, your SG has nothing to do with the royal family in its conception or whatever. I know, nor care, nothing about it. It's just a hollywoodism that makes me cringe and you happened to accidentally fall into the same catchment area.

So my apologies for insulting you.
  23. Okay, so, first off hi!

I'm a GMT-zone player myself, and have some alts without homes but... can I be brutally honest? In my opinion (And JUST my opinion, which you are entirely free to disregard or not to any degree) this sounds a little... stereotypical? In that, anything British outside of Britain somehow has to have some nebulous, tenuous link to the royal family. Why do they have the crown as their symbol? Are they royally appointed? If not, wouldn't it make sense to have some other sort of logo, possibly incorporating British colours without the royal association?

I don't know, maybe I'm grouchy about this kind of thing because to me the old Victorian standard of the "English gentleman" is no longer applicable. To me England now is just full of money-grubbing politicians and people who think that someone wearing a different coloured football shirt is valid reason to slit their face open...

At any rates, my sincerest apologies for derailing your thread. It's late and I'm clearly not in the best of moods. Anyone who has questions or comments should probably direct them to me privately, so as to avoid clogging up Royal Grey's recruitment thread. The best of luck to your SG, Peacemoon, and please forgive my rudeness.
