I'll be keeping an eye on this to see if the change hampers the gameplay too severely.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Castle, I'm afraid the blaster community has likely heard "we'll keep an eye on it" or "we're looking at it" with no subsequent action too often to take any such statements very seriously.
  2. It seems rather sloppy to have a different name for the secondary in the guts of the game than is used in the parts of the game visible to the players. Seems like needless complexity to me.

    *sigh*

Just confirmed it on test: Auto-Turret can no longer be teleported.

It's our fault, really. */Device blasters were just too uber. We've been spending the last 2 years soloing AVs by teleporting ATs in front of them, after all...

    [/ QUOTE ]

Good lord, this is so stupid. What in the name of hell is _Castle_ smoking?
  4. Heh, Giant Monsters are pretty lame too. I've been badge hunting in Croatoa the last few days. When Jack of Irons and Eochai Fight each other, they can't do enough damage to each other to even move a healthbar slightly for more than a second or two.

Wouldn't it be funny if they made it a hover turret?

    [/ QUOTE ]

    I'd prefer a shoulder turret.
  6. I'm gonna copy and paste my comment from the other thread:

About "Gadgets" it may be thats what devices is called in the pigg files, and thats why they said gadgets instead of devices.. Powersets in the .piggs sometimes have different names then are used in the game.

Or so my un-named sources tell me.

At 50 you can change your title at any time.

Heh. I have a level 50 who never chose a title. Now he can be a veritable title-[censored]. And people say there's nothing to do at 50

    [/ QUOTE ]

Hehe, ditto. I never picked one for Quest because I was afraid of her being locked into a title that stopped fitting her.

Yeah, I have many characters I haven't chosen titles for because I didn't want to get locked in to one and end up hating it later.

Here's your DOOM: Yet another issue will go by with no new content for level 50 characters it seems, as we know the Invention System isn't coming until Issue Nine. Issue Nine, well, we won't be seeing that until something like April of 2007.

All in all, I'm very dissapointed in this, and I know its going to influence some folks in my SG to suspend their accounts.

A doom late and a dollar short.

We've known since the Positron radio announcement thingy that Inventions was coming out in Issue 9, haven't we? I mean, this isn't exactly news as of today and this very thread.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    You're confusing things here.

Until this thread, we did not know that the Legends System and the Invention System had been merged. In May, Positron gave an interview to the website Boomtown, in which he said this:

    [ QUOTE ]

Q: What do you mean by “fat loot”?
    A:
In the next update, Issue 8, we will have a new system that gives us the ability to make your level 50 characters better. That means we’ve abandoned the idea of raising the level cap to 60 for now and instead will give you the option to make your level 50s better, then better again and then even better. That process will last a lot longer than additional 10 levels, which just create a new problem: What to do after hitting level 60?

    [/ QUOTE ]

We did not know that the system he was talking about here has been rolled into the invention system, since he was specifically refering to content for level 50 characters.

    So yeah, this is news.

    Hey guys, a quick clarification:

The Invention System and the "Legends" System are "one in the same"...

Basically the Legends system, as it was designed, was not implemented, but out of it grew what will be known as the Invention System. The Invention System does what we wanted the Legends System to do, and a whole lot more, and lays the ground work for limitless expandability that the Legend System just didn't have.

    [/ QUOTE ]

(I'm determined to find some degree of DOOM in this statement even if it takes me all day)

I really have to question the wisdom of this Wal Mart exclusivity deal. Aside from the complete screw up that the release has been, I don't think this was a smart decision. How likely is your average Wal Mart customer to play MMOs? I would submit that they are far, far, less likely to be into MMOs than people who shop in places like EB Games and the like. Just because Wal Mart has a wide reach, I don't think its really going to reach the sort of audience that is interested in MMOs.

    [/ QUOTE ]
    Agreed.

Going with the usual distribution to all retailers (Best Buy, EB, etc.) would likely have gotten the game into a lot more new players' hands. Wal Mart is a big retailer but apart from "soft" titles like The Sims, how much do they sell to the more hardcore MMO player? I've never bought a game there, myself.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Wal-Mart is where I bought my original CoH...

    [/ QUOTE ]

Well, uh, good for you I guess. But the point is not that no one ever buys an MMORPG from Walmart, but that people are far more likely to buy MMOs from game stores.

I mean, the Walmart I went into had a game section that was dominated by Barbie and Dora The Explorer games. Somehow, I think they're aiming at a different demographic than EB and the like.

Weren't Incarnates supposed to be Issue 9 or Issue 10?

    [/ QUOTE ]

I don't recall Incarnates ever being mentioned in the same breath as any particular upcoming Issue by a developer. They've been pretty consistant about not mentioning any time frame about new EATs.
  16. Well, we could, but I'm just going to operate on the assumption that its not happening until I see it announced in a Features Update.

I wonder if the furor over another issue with no content for level 50s would be worse than the furor over vet. rewards.
  17. Since it wasn't mentioned in the game update, and we haven't heard a peep from Cryptic about it since May, I'm not so sure we'll see Legends system or any sort of post-50 content in I8.

I'd like to be wrong about that though.

People keep saying we were promised two development teams, one for CoH and one for CoV but keep overlooking a major point -- this only applied while CoV was in development. Cryptic apparently had no plan to maintain separate teams after CoV had launched. While they may have not made this particular policy clear from the outset to the playerbase, Statesman did admit this was the way they had operated in a post to this forum sometime within the last few months or so.

So, really, the "we were promised two dev teams forever and ever" argument ought to be quietly buried.

    [/ QUOTE ]

True, I should point out that I didn't expect two seperate dev teams to exist forever. I will contend however, that there really never was two seperate dev teams. Or if there were, there is nothing in the game to prove it. CoH development stopped with Issue Five, before CoV launched.

Are you taking resources away from CoH/CoV?

Cryptic has a team of programmers, artists, designers, and producers dedicated solely to creating and maintaining both products. The studio will continue to update both titles with new content, including a multi-year storyline, a new gameplay system that allows characters to craft Enhancements and Costume pieces, brand new missions, and much, much more.

"...dedicated solely to creating and maintaining both products"

did anyone else notice the MUO trailer in the lower right hand corner of the screen from Obsidious' link? No gameplay involved, but the trailer is already done, so the project must be moving along fairly well.

I have to agree with Lady Sadako that there will be 2 seperate teams working on CoX and MUO. Tabula Rasa hasn't brought CoX to a screaching halt development wise, neither has Guildwars or Auto Assault. Just because CoX and MUO are the same genre does not mean that they are going to be sharing development teams or stealing from one another. I am sure that some folks may get shuffled, but they are not going to downsize the CoX dev team to bolster the MUO one.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I think you are suffering from a common misconception here.

NCSoft does not develop CoH or any of those other games. Cryptic Studios does. Other companies make those games. Auto Assault is made by Net Devil, for example. Those games are published and supported by NCSoft, but thats a far different thing than developing them.

Cryptic's only games to date are CoH and CoV. Now they are making another game. The concern over resources is valid. We were told there would be seperate dev teams for CoH and CoV, and that CoH and CoV would both develop at the same time. That has been demonstrated to not have happened.

Heroes dont have Mayhem or Newspaper missions. Issue Eight fixes that. Thats what he means about content.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    But...

Villains don't have 13 TFs/Trials (Not counting Respecs).

    Villains don't have 27 zones.

Villains don't have any Hazard zones.

Why does he feel the need to rectify one without commenting on the other?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Because the others aren't coming right now? Or because some of those things they put in CoH have been deemd to be a mistake and wont be added to CoV? We know whats coming in I8, and he's told us I9 is about the Invention system. If no new TFs or zones are coming for villains until after those issues, theres no point talking about something so far out that the plans will most likely change five times before they happen.

Numerous zones is not a huge boon. The spread out the playerbase more, and often overlap, leading to more travel time. CoV zones are larger than CoH zones, and contain within them areas that have hazard stone style spawns.

Hazard zones without content in them are pretty much ghost towns. They add almost no value to the game. They're just boxes with mobs in them. I think the devs saw that and decided not to include them in CoV.

Villains hasn't been out as long, so it doesnt have as many TFs. Thats perhaps unfortunate, but lots of those heroe TFs are tedious. The Positron TF and the Dr. Quarterfield are widely held to be among the worst experiences in the game. My Supergroup for example, has only ever run Dr. Q once, and was so disgusted by it they've never gone back.

You can total up numeric lists of differences to try and make a point, but I feel that its vastly oversimplfying the situation.

And here's the best reason why he's commenting on improving the Hero game right now:

City of Heroes has not had a PvE Content addition in over a year. You know, the game that made CoV possible. The game whose development has been more or less stagant to support CoV.

Now, if I were Lead Designer, and the flagship product of my Studio had not seen content additions to the most important part of its game play for over a year, I'm pretty sure I'd want to talk that up.

    Dear Positron,

Thank you for the letter. It's so good to receive real mail in this digital age.

I’d like to start out by mentioning Issue 8: To Protect and Serve. This is a hero-centric Issue that finally levels the playing field between Heroes and Villains.

What do you mean? Content-wise, Heroes still have more to do than villains (More TFs, more trials, more zones, etc). Levelling the playing field PvP-wise? Yeah, heroes have that advantage as well.

Please tell me your thoughts Positron, and until next time!

  23. According to MMORPHChart.com, as of May, EQ had "fallen sharply" to 200,000. It says something about how successful EQ has been when its a sharp fall to have more subscribers than CoX has ever had.

EQ2 is listed as having 175,000 subscribers. So, it looks like the two are coming to a point where EQII will meet and then pas EQ1.
