One of the remainder was white and the other saw herself as a white girl. Raven would technically be "blue", of which 50% went evil and 50% stayed good.

On the good team, we have Darwin and Beast. One is a traditional "minority" and the other became one of two people on the planet that shared that skin color.

You could even say that there was a third minority that stayed good...namely the ginger.
    Mystique is a ginger >.>
  4. So they are dismantling Batman Inc, putting Dick back where he ought to be (even though he was a great Batman with Damian), making Barbara less iconic and removing her from where she should be with the Birds, putting two grumpy chars together that won't work well together, and apparently erasing their 3 most popular characters (Tim Drake, Stephenia Brown, and Cassandra Cain) and erasing Renee as Question, Maggie Sawyer as Chief the SCU, and Kate Kane as Batwoman... which is stupid...

All they had to do to "fix" the situation is have Batman Inc become Leviathan forcing Bruce to realize that it was a mistake and coming back and becoming Batman Prime again... Have Bloodhaven rebuilt or have Nightwing move to New York with Damian and then have Bruce and Tim go back to how they did when they were doing the Batman & Robin books where they appear as needed in each other books... All problems solved. New major problem for the JLA to face. DCU is kept.

Anyhow: The Test for Female Characterization
    1. Is there more than one major female character in the film?
    2. If so, do those female characters ever talk to each other?
    3. If so, do those female characters talk to each other about subjects other than men?

Gotta hit all three points to pass the test. Not many blockbuster movies do.
    It depends...
Mystique and Emma Frost are secondary characters at best. Angel and the government agent are tertiary or worse.

    Do you consider Secondary major?
If so then how do you define major? Emma didn't need to exist in the movie cuz her character doesn't make a difference. Mystique was more about being talked to rather than talking...
Also both had very little over all screen time.

Talk in what way? i don't remember Mystique talking to Emma and very little and in a group setting to Angel.

Every time Mystique talked pretty much it was about how she looked save for the one time which was We should have call signs!

Emma on the other hand seemed to say stuff just to justify her being in the seen rather than her having any content...I mean even the scene where she is captured and interrogated by Xavier and Magneto she says very little and then they cut away before we see anything really happen.

So I'd say, no, no two major females...nor did they talk but then i could be mistaken. Like I said the female characters seemed more like plot devices than characters.

As far as Darwin... I thought he had interesting power concept that they could have played with and since he i guess died in the comics they could have done more with him without making fans as mad. I hadn't heard of him before now either...just seems like a character you wouldn't kill off.

Can you elaborate on these comments:

    -Xavier was to pessimistic

-The only character they got right and the only scenes that were better than mediocre to crap were the Emma Frost scenes.

This movie wasn't bad...nothing can compare to the lame stuff from 2010!! Mediocre/okay is more accurate. Out of the summers movies so far, this one is 2 or 3

    1. Pirates
    2. X-men/Fast Five
    3. Kung Fu Panda
    4. Thor
I haven't seen PotC, Fast Five, or Kung Fu Panda 2, but I would rank Thor above this and probably KFP2 equal to or better than Thor...while Pirates would likely come under that as equal or better than this, just based on genre and what I know I like...and Fast Five would get negative points >.>

Xavier saying things like "they'll never accept you that way" and "we got to hide" and things like that are signs of a weak and overall negative outlook on the situation and this is antithetical to Xavier's character who is a loud and proud mutant who wants the X-Men in the spotlight to show what good mutants are doing. Xavier is the complete opposite of what a "visibility" movement leader should be in this film and they don't have him showing signs of changing either.

Emma Frost's scenes all played to what I know about her character (though the whole squeezing a lady wrapped in diamonds to get her to change back is kinda dumb I dunno exactly how her powers work, but that is still dumb). I have a feeling though that this was more due to the actress than the writer... I mean her main scenes were walking into a place in underwear and giving a psychic lapdance...

In fact, thinking back on it, the Female characters were all pretty silent and almost always half naked or completely naked, so getting Emma Frost accurate to the point the movie did is no large feet considering she doesn't have to talk be clothed for most of it.

And now that I think about the movie really gave off an anti-feminist vibe with all the nakedness, lack of females talking, the talking of not accepting based on looks, angel saying the way she didn't like the way the guards looked at her... it seems to me that the entire movie centered around how they should look or want to look rather than this issue that they're dangerous to themselves and others and either that new paradigm has to be accepted or curtailed... even the main villain with all his power ultimately was relying on nuclear missiles which doesn't show how dangerous he and mutants are but rather how dangerous mankind is to itself.

Like I said, badly written and the more I think on it the worse I tend to view it.
  7. btw I meant Reaper... Reaper is an awesome show without an ending.
  8. For all the people saying how good this was... it was mediocre at best in my opinion. It felt too expository and rushed while none of the characters felt right and I never connected to any of them nor did I care to. The villain was just dumb as it was a replacement for magneto rather than a well thought out character and his scheme is idiotic at best.

    Xavier was to pessimistic
    Magneto was too brain dead
Beast was too focused on appearance... they're his feet people... noone looks at his feet and why would you want to look like a dork? I mean if you can give yourself a normal foot you can certainly change the rest of your features a lot more simply so why go that way?
Angel doesn't have enough exposition to justify her going evil
Banshee is lame. Why would you use him? And it never really pays off.
Havoc is stupid to use... he's Scott's YOUNGER brother... why not use scott? Any reason you can use for Scott works better than it does for Havoc.
Darwin... the one character that seems interesting of the lame cast of characters
Mystique... She wasn't really a character imo, she was a sounding board and a plot device...and the people that sounded off her all did so insultingly and out of character... She's a freakin woman that can look any way she wants. They could developed her so much better by having her react to people being d-bags about her appearance not being what they want.

The only character they got right and the only scenes that were better than mediocre to crap were the Emma Frost scenes. Every other scene was just mediocre or bad...

The acting was good, the directing was good, the special effects were good... so I can only fault the studio and the writers for everything that is bad with this movie. If they gave this to a better writer and was able to keep all or most of the actors I think they could have been a much better movie...unfortunately I don't think that will happen.

it has been shown that he gains powers from different suns. There us no reason to believe that he may have powers not yet known especially under a sun he tries to keep away from
  10. Actually there are 3 things that should be brought up...

#1. If you were to try to defeat superman it would be great to have access to the ability to control his powers, turning them on and off, at will. This can be done relatively easily. Luthor created a satellite based device that could do this in the late 80s early 90s... it was one of the first superman stories i read in my readings of superman...

#2. depending on version of superman you don't need shields and such... you just need to be fast enough, smart enough, and durable enough to keep just out of range for long enough to drain off his power... This was done in the early 90s to some effect. It didn't work 100% but worked well enough for proof of concept.

#3. Red "solar" light is and always has been a bad idea. While it is true that superman loses his powers under red solar light to varying degrees... it could be that he just hasn't found what powers he has under red solar light... As unlikely as it might be I wouldn't tempt it is all.

Throw them back into the revolving door that is comic book justice system? He would have to spend the rest of his life knowing she died because of him. Batman knows this. At least in the JLU cartoons.
I'm beginning to think i'm the only one that has read comics lately...

Back when Clark proposed and revealed himself to be Clark shortly after some stuff happened and he broke it off for exactly these types of reasons...

Lois's response... "Stop being so arrogant. It is my decision to put myself in this danger and for you to not let me take this risk is akin to you trying to control my life...and besides with being a reporter I'm in danger all the time anyways"

Batman has pretty much the same outlook as Lois. While he believes it is wrong to bring someone into his world once they are in that world it is their choice to stay or not. This has been the case with all the Batwomen, Bat-Men, Silver Saintcloud (or whatever her name is), Jezebel Jet, a few others not affiliated with the Batfamily, all but 1 Batgirl (and a robin)...

Stephenie Brown he tried to force her to quit for years and he found that ended bad and Vicky Vale he's tried to keep out of the life style more or less over the years.
  12. Reader is a great about a dude that has to become Satan's Bounty Hunter... unfortunately it was canceled after 2 seasons and the last episode sets up a 3rd rather than having an end to the series.

Read the latest Batman-Superman arc. It is the one and only time i know about it happening and he gets different powers due to the sun being made of magic. And yes it is canon ^.^

Also, magic isn't really effective because were are looking at a technological solution and it is unlikely you are going to find any magic that is that deadly that you could add to a technological suit...

And a magical suit doesn't work either...

Your best bet would be to somehow Dr Fate's helmet into a techno helment and combine what i suggested and the powers of Dr Fate... but beyond being able to do that you'd be wasting your time looking for a magical option when kryptonite is so much easier.

Edit: actually i just looked at it... he's not immune to magic under the magic sun...just he has his normal vulnerabilities to it... Still we don't know his powers under other suns and again no way to get a good weapon to actually fight him with without going full magic and i'm assuming we don't have time for hundreds of years of training to be awesome at high powered magic.
  14. There was a few ways that the shields being hit was dealt with... blow the fuse, make the shields stronger, or use them in their phaser...

The suit i'm talking about could do any of the three.

One of the fields could easily cushion any impact...

along with the fact that the technology to produce these fields could be turned inward and the problem with outside forces would be alleviated the fact is the suit i propose would have energy absorbing materials and padding that while it doesn't seem thick is actually very good as spreading out any force that would do damage...

Btw...if i know my marvel right vibranium has unlimited energy storage potential so the problem you are suggesting would never occur so >.> yeah...

    Not exactly 100% there...

It has only been tested to be true that Superman is week under a normal Yellow Star.

While a Red Star make him normal

We have no idea what his powers are under Blue, Green, Orange, White, Purple, and Indigo...or any of the non-visible light spectrum of electro-magnetic radiation.

but we do know he is invulnerable to magic under a magic yellow sun so...

We can assume that the different stars give him a different set OR that each spectra gives him a different power and thus it could be that each of his powers are only the level they because of the environment has that amount of radiation in the area... it could be that he gains super speed for example with more gamma radiation in the area...And lastly It could just be thrown up to intensity where REd just doesn't have enough energy to charge him while Blue would super charge him and make the magic weakness go away all together...

So in my opinion hitting him with magic as your first line of attack is dumb as there is a moderate chance that he'll be immune to magic...especially with dimensional hopping that you'd like be doing in a scenario where you are fighting him and have something like vibranium...
  16. Superman's powers...

    Heat Vision
    Ice Breath
    Invulnerability
    Super Strength
    Flight
    Super Speed
    X-ray vision
    Super Hearing
    Regeneration

Let's start with a skin suit that if penetrated injects the user with a regen serum and uses synth skin that regrows over the tear. This serum could be held within the fabric itself. We can make this out of a nano-silk fiber synthetic flesh that we have the beginnings of already...

If I remember right silk breathes and you wouldn't have to worry about coolant on this level so at this level we have a nearly as good regeneration as Superman...

On this next layer of the suit we have a suit of synth muscle made of carbon nano-tubes with an exo-skeleton frame made of adamantium or a titanium alloy. This gives a level of invulnerability but more importantly would likely be able to equal some max strength levels of Superman. This layer would also need a coolant for the body and it would house a power source of some sort...both a back up and a primary and/or would feed off of energy generated from another source discussed in a few...

On this layer at various points you have several shield generators of various types providing superman style invulnerability.

So at this point we have...
    Invulnerability, Super Strength, Regeneration

One assumes that if you're going to have the field generators on this level for shields you are probably going to want the others...

Flight would be accomplished through either hand and feet boosters OR magnetic or antigrav fields...

Super-Speed could be accomplished by a mini-warp field generator.

The next Layer you'd want a gold, carbon nano-tube, and if you had access to it vibranium exo suit layer. that has built in solar power capture... This would allow the suit to be ultra-hard, light weight, maneuverable, and with every attack that someone throws at you it powers the suit and if no one is around you have solar power.

For x-ray vision and super hearing...we have stuff in the world that mimics that type of stuff so you throw that in a helmet and you got super senses...of course it would also need to help with super speed and such cuz we wouldn't be able to keep up.

The heat vision, just attach laser that vcan handle heavy load and tie it into the power source...

Ice Breath... all you would need to replicate is to go back to the 1st layer and use a similar layer some where that contains a couple of chemicals that you ca control their combining and releasing and stream them into a pressurized air gun.

One of those chemicals would likely create or be oxygen in those mixtures so you could also replicate superman's not need for oxygen too with that...

It would be light weight, quite invulnerable, and provided nothing malfunctioned at it wasn't a heavily prolonged fight you could easily match superman in an armor suit a lot less cumbersome than the one you often see batman use to do it...

This armor would be more along the lines of a light armor over several layers of a latex suit... it'd probably weight a ton, but you would feel the weight due to the synth muscle and exo-suit... and the anti-grav field...The difference for the person inside the suit would be like having an inch or two bigger waist than normal.

If I was going to mod it to fight superman, depending on how I wanted to beat him I'd modify the power source with kryptonite, change the armaments to a kryptonite syringes, and changed the chemicals of the freeze breathe to having it so it laces with kryptonite... I'd also add in a layer of lead take keep from getting radiation poisoned...

Actually over the last week or so of discussing this with people its become apparent that people don't use the word reboot exactly correctly when it comes to DCU...

The DCU has never had an actual reboot. It has had retcons and a setting of official canon as well as removing other canon.

Crisis on Infinite Earths was more a story line reason for focusing only on the modern age and defining what is actually canon... It did not reboot the DCU... especially since it just set the timeline to Y10.

Zero Hour while the story did reboot within itself, it simply defined Y100+ and retconned some problems and since again it didn't start telling stories at Y0 it was not a reboot

Infinite Crisis reintroduced the things eliminated in CoIE in a more organized way and with a organized multiverse...

Anyways the "New DCU" has me interested in what they mean and makes me wonder if they are going to reveal what they have been hinting at for a while... that the 52 universes and the infinite multiverse is actually just one layer within a mega infinite multiverse...

They hinted at it at the end of 52, they pretty much stated it in Blackest Night, one of the major writers hinted at it while answering a question, and I doubt they launching 52 issue #1s by coincidence.
  18. complaints about age are dumb...

At most most characters are like late 40s... Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise are the same age Batman and most of the older generation are.

Almost all characters in DC comics have experienced some sort of age effecting magic to varying degrees and even though some have been reversed or nullified there is no telling just how that would effect people in general. And JSA who are all in their 80s use age mage to make them like 30-40

And thats without taking into account higher technology and people who live healthier lives tend to live longer more vital lives and look younger for longer...and just about every character we know of is highly active highly trained healthy people in a world with technology better than ours with access to technology better than their world...

I don't see an age problem for most characters... I can only really think of 3 characters that are semi messed up age wise... Alfred Pennyworth and Leslie Thompkins who are in their 80/90s and Jimmy Olsen who should be like 30 to 40 years old, but he's like 20ish and we can explain this away by dismissing Jimmy Olsen being around for most of the Pre-Crisis decade of the modern age...

This adds yet more fail to the pile. But, I can at least thank DC because now I'll be saving more money. Maybe I'll buy trades, maybe not. I'll complete the collections of previous titles that I have (just finished the Cassie Cain Batgirl series!), but new stuff? Meh.

As to the whole argument that people can't follow the characters or understand stuff...here's a hint...

QUIT WITH THE YEARLY CRISES/CROSSOVER/MASSIVE SUPER ULTRA MEGA ZORD EVENTS THAT CHANGE EVERYTHING BUT NOT REALLY! How many different "events" have happened in the last five years? I'm a decent comic buyer/reader, but I have no fething clue of what's going on.

Tell stories that don't require a person to buy 18 different comic series to just get the full thing! If I'm buying a Batman comic, I don't want to see, "Continued in Blue Beetle #23!". An argument could be made that other Bat-titles is fair game, provided that something is shown in the comic that would make it relevant to the other title (Detective Comics continued in Nightwing for example).
yeah... the annual crazy **** happening is stupid... you can't have a mega event if something huge is happening every year, has little impact, and lasts the entire year...

Also the whole brightest day story was a crap story and a mistake... THey should have followed straight into and made the big event the GL wars that is going on now.

What about Tim and Steph? What about Cassandra Cain? (that would actually be one way to get me onboard with this, if it undid the horrid character assassination they did to Cass)

It really is gonna be a wait and see situation. Though DC, if you wanna get ME onboard, gimme a "Batgirl & Spoiler" ongoing with Cass and Steph. I'll back you all the way.
See that's the thing I like where the Bat family is for the most part.

Have you read the recent Jason Todd stuff? It's brilliant
I still think Tim should be Robin in terms of names, but I can live with the change as it happened
Dick & Damian are a great Batman and Robin.
Stephenie is just coming into her own and while I don't like what they have done with Cassandra Cain they could give her a new name and as long as it doesn't suck i'd be happy with it.
I want to see more of Crimson (i think that was her name; Jason's sidekick) and Batwoman as well as Flame Bird (i believe is the name she is going with now)

And I definitely want to see a return of young justice characters as well as a book focusing on Misfit and Black Alice... 2 awesome characters that haven't been used that much but they have a great set up and a great yin yang thing that would work for a title.

That have so much that could work within those characters, but all they seem to want to do is throw it away... It screams of lack of creativity to me.

Batman is the WoW of comics >.>
And Brown and Cain are part of those sales. There's like 10 Bat books, but they aren't all named Batman...I count Red Robin, Robin, Nightwing, Streets of Gotham, Gotham City Sirens, Batgirl, and BoP to a degree, as "Bat books"

They way I see it, there's either the new blood like Kyle Rayner and Wally West, or the Teen Titans age characters like Supergirl and Jamie Reyes, or both. Kyle is popular, but he'll -always- be second string to Hal (and John Stewart if you count the JLU exposure). I can't comment on Wally because I don't care about the Flash. DC doesn't know what to do with the modern Supergirl. The new Blue Beetle has a cult fanbase, but it's not enough to keep his solo title going. Teen Titans are one of the core DC books, but it still doesn't sell anywhere near the levels of the main Batbooks or GL titles.
Dick Grayson... he's "newer generation" in continuity, and I'd even say that his character is so bastardized that his latest incarnation is not the same character as Nightwing nor Robin, but he technically is as old or older than a number of the older generation characters... It depends on how you see it though.

    Quote:
As for the money spent on advertising. I think it's safe to say that DC is getting a lot more backing from WB than they were previously. WB are looking to the DC universe for the next Harry Potter franchise.

The only aspect of the comic book industry that's been growing is digital sales. Monthlies are slowing bleeding off readers (barring the occasional sales stunt like the Future Foundation reboot, but it's still too early to tell how that's going to hold up) and the top selling books used to clear 100,000 copies easy on a regular basis. Now it's sales spike for the highest selling title to sell to 100,000 copies. And while trades do sell, neither Marvel or DC are switching to a trades only format any time soon.

Is DC down to the hardcore fanbase who'll buy their product no matter what? I certainly hope not. But those 100 customers were 110 last year. And 120 the year before that. And if DC wouldn't be pulling the Flashpoint reboot, according to the trends of sales they'd be down to 90 next year. As of right now, DC is not attracting new customers. For some reason, even the whole "Drawing the Line at $2.99" thing backfired. DC got small spike, but they're right back to where they were, if not worse.

So yeah, there's risk that DC will lose a chunk of their 100 customers with the reboot. But there's also a chance that even if they lose 50% out of spite for the reboot, they'll gain 55%. And the word of mouth from the new people that -like- the new direction will bring in another 20% and so on.
In the past when comics were at their peak, yes, they used to be able to sell a million copies... and of those million 10-20 were bought by the same guys, sales were bolstered by special covers and idiot collectors... It's kinda like how WoW has 10 million subscribers, but we all know that a large chunk of that number is gold farmers and people who have 2-30 accounts.

I'd say an average book is more around the 50,000 copies region while extremely popular, but not actually big money makers in the grand scheme of things are in the 100,000 region. I'd take 10 50k books over 1 100k book any day... and the 50k books are a lot more plentiful and easy to sell.

The big name books get their money from spinoffs and licensing... ie Red Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, and BoP are more important in the making money business than Batman himself as far as comics are concerned...

Batman and Superman however make money with licensing...but the more you jerk people around with reboots, bad movies, and bad usage of the license the less faith in the product you have.

So when they reboot they lower their credibility with the people who actually care, don't make any head way with those who don't, and more often than not destroy those good selling books that are where their actual cash flow comes from. In the grand scheme of things they are only hurting themselves.

Further, anyone who picks up a book post September isn't going to stay because if they pick it up and they're new it's because they are curious about this great character the older readers are talking about and when you reboot, unless you do it in such a way that it is telling the story better and more succinctly to the point where the older readers were at, you are just going to have that new reader scoff and walk away...and even if they do they still can't jump into the fan base because they won't have any clue what the older readers are talking about unless they actually go back and read those issues.

Brown is extremely popular as is cain. the reason Cain isn't as popular right now is she isn't in anything. BoP has been relaunched 1 time and it was only "canceled" for the bat familly hiatus thing last year or the year before last... so it wasn't ever really canceled or relaunched.

    Not in DC they don't.
Yeah they do, but then it matters what you mean by younger generation so i'll drop that.

Hate to break it to you, but I think DC has learned the hard way that potential new readers (the target audience of the post Flashpoint reboot) outnumber their current fanbase they've been catering to for the better part of the last decade (longstanding readers like you and me) by a very wide margin
Potential new customers will always out number existing customers, unless you have 50% or more of the population as customers, however only idiots sell to "potential new customers" primarily. It's a losing business model and I don't think I know of any time it has ever succeeded. It's because the return ratio is horrible...

If I have 100 loyal customers and doing something to scare off 50 of those to potentially get 100 new customers I will have long term made a lose because 50% retention almost never happens in any business. 25% is roughly what most successful MMOs do.

Further more you are not only losing the 50's money you are simultaneously spending money on some sort of campaign to attract these new customers which equates to more lost capital. On top of that, the customers you do retain from the original 100 are more likely to leave due to the business breaking trust and the retention rate will be less due to the original 100 making it known that the company isn't as trust worthy as once believed and by the simple act of complaining will drive newer people away...

It is always better to retain the original 100 and work on getting more... your in the same or better position doing this.
  24. v.v They handled why Wonder Woman and superman is stupid a long time ago...

And why would you take Gail Simone, one your best writers off Birds of Prey... Perhaps they intend on putting her back on Wonder Woman to fix that garbage before destroying it again.

technically it has 2 right now...

    Hal Jordan and John Stewart
Kyle Rayner is a Lantern of the sector, but isn't on Earth
Guy Gardner while still recognized as a GL of the sector is actually a High ranking Lantern more or less without a sector.
