  1. That was very kickass. Wonder if anyone else noticed the Grawl casting mending near the end.
  2. I sense potential!

as many have said on these boards, keep drawing, nothing beats practise (although a mindblowing natural talent comes a very close second)

and i bet the other other artists on here can give you pointers.
  3. Well Migrayne, I'm not much of an artist on paper, but I seem to do better with the design software than a lead pencil

As I had mentioned in one of my other post in this thread, I'd have to expand my knowledge of the program I'd use to plan out the piece. These pieces would be rather complex 3D pieces, as opposed to simpler 2D pieces. So I cant exactly show anything of my expertise, and the fact I've no pictures of anything I have made.

Once I take and complete the courses for complex 3D pieces, I will repost and show what I'd be able to do. But that will be some time in the new year.

I do have my limitations. If line art can be provided, it would make my work much easier. This could have its own complication with the original artist though. This is one way to do this. If I've got to create something from scratch, then the process is much much longer.

This is basically like trying to design a piece solely from what a costumer has said over the phone, as opposed to one who has a technical drawing provided. Not the best analogy but hopefully it gets the point across.

All this is to see if people would be interested in such a product. And as it seems, answer any questions people have.

Well I guess it depends on the resolution of said machine. Couldn't you find a machine shop that already has this machine, just bring the designs and then they can do it, or rent it to you or something? I dunno.

What about doing it in wood, or something?

Or by hand! Hammer and chisel baby! :P

    [/ QUOTE ]

machines of the caliber i work with are accurate to within 1-2 microns (thousandeths of a millimeter) depending on what material i worth with. as a comparison, stanadard printer paper is about 110 microns. the only limit to what the machine can do are the tools at hand and the person programming.

and as much as i'd want to work with wood, i'll leave that to the cabinet makers and those guys on The New Yankee Workshop
  5. While that may be true Rowr, having 1/144th of the space to fit something in is rather....well...small :P.

sure, it is possible, but the tools I'd need to do any detail at that level (even a simple outline) would be expensive, not to mention friggin small, along the lines of 0.050 inches or even smaller.

what I could do at that size though, would be a bunch of lil emblems (for example: the Archtype symbols). those wouldnt require any extra small tooling, but i think i'd have to get the OK from cryptic concerning that (or send em a batch as a bribe :P).

A bit off topic...but is your icon a layout of DMT?

I am actually really looking forward to seeing one of your examples.

actually its not C12H16N2, but C12H17N2O4P (psilocybin). close but no cigar

and I'd like to see my own example as well lol

Metal can't be a cheap material to work with can it? I guess my queston would be what would the estimated range that a plate would cost?

This is such a cool idea btw.

    [/ QUOTE ]

A 1 square foot by 1 inch thick aluminium plate goes for 120$ or so. could be wrong as i just did a real quick check with the first place that actually gave a price.

I'd have to check with some people i know for a better estimate of price, but this is all in the pre-pre-pre-pre-pre-planning stage.
  8. yeh.... i'll have to get back to you with that. going to be a long time til i get even one of mine done.
  9. no arguement on the fun and rewarding part. I enjoy my trade, but the usual use for it (production work *shudder*) i find rather boring.

I have already used my knowledge of machining to make little trinkets, rings and segments of a bracelet, but this was on a conventional machine (the user directly uses the machine, no PC interface to speak of) which would be fairly inexpensive in comparison. What I'd have to use here would be a machine worth over a hundred grand, not adding in tools and other things. Even if i were to relegate this to a "jobber shop" (a machine shop that takes outside contracts of work) the overhead would eaily be over 100$/hour.

I can't blame ya for checking the interest level before investing in a machine for it though!

    [/ QUOTE ]

Thats exactly what I'm checking for, and I'm well aware that the majority of people wont pay for something until they've seen the product beforehand.

Ya know TA, I'm starting to think you can smell a thread concerning possible fanart commissions
  11. I'll assume you clicked the link I provided, but you might of missed what I was pointing to, so here it is: Clickity 2

This is the banner from that site. That piece of metal (the lion's head) is basically my trade geared to Art instead of aerospace/automotive parts.

Just as a welder can make sculptures from steel, I could (possibly) do the same with my trade.

And as much as I'd like to show off my hero in metal, I must first further my knowledge of the program I'd use, not to mention the machine is very very expensive.

    Any clearer TA?
  12. Oh no no. This is in the same vein as my trade, just applied to another facet of machining: art.

and no, that isnt my website, it happens to be the site for the software to design various pieces on the machines i work with.
  13. Thankfully I found the perfect example for this:

    Clickity

The picture you'll see right away is basically what I'd attempt to do.
  14. No No, I'm not asking for free art (although that would be cool).

As I've seen here, there are people willing to buy commissioned pieces by extremely talented artists (and I do feel a tinge of jealousy as I see those pictures), would anyone ever want their favorite/namesake character immortalized in a hunk of metal?

Now, i'm not talking about a full-body sculpture or bust, but more of a small plate (perhaps an 8 inch square) with some 3D work involved (raised areas, profiles etc). If anyone is unclear of what i'm trying to portray I'll try to explain it better afterwards.

There are things that would need to be provided to produce such a plate, but that needent be mentioned til I've thought this through .

So, would anyone actually invest money into aquiring one? (providing this idea of mine can mature into something fruitful)

EDIT: just want to reiterate that I'm not offering any services at the moment, I'd have to see the market for it, as well as other costs regarding production as the type of machine I'd have to use is shall we say...hideously expensive.

  16. there is an over-abundance of awesome in there. practically cracked my screen.

    Very shiney~
  17. you could always pick up GIMP. its an open source Photoshop-esque program. i use it every so often and tis quite spiffy
