A Question to the Fanart Community:

Diminish

No No, I'm not asking for free art (although that would be cool).

As I've seen here, there are people willing to buy commissioned pieces by extremely talented artists (and I do feel a tinge of jealousy as I see those pictures), would anyone ever want their favorite/namesake character immortalized in a hunk of metal?

Now, i'm not talking about a full-body sculpture or bust, but more of a small plate (perhaps an 8 inch square) with some 3D work involved (raised areas, profiles etc). If anyone is unclear of what i'm trying to portray I'll try to explain it better afterwards.

There are things that would need to be provided to produce such a plate, but that needent be mentioned til I've thought this through .

So, would anyone actually invest money into aquiring one? (providing this idea of mine can mature into something fruitful)

EDIT: just want to reiterate that I'm not offering any services at the moment, I'd have to see the market for it, as well as other costs regarding production as the type of machine I'd have to use is shall we say...hideously expensive.

Got an example of what you mean man?

I am always interested although money is tight at the moment!

Thankfully I found the perfect example for this:

Clickity

The picture you'll see right away is basically what I'd attempt to do.

So you havn't tried this yet? Something you are attempting?

Is that your website? Your work?

Oh no no. This is in the same vein as my trade, just applied to another facet of machining: art.

and no, that isnt my website, it happens to be the site for the software to design various pieces on the machines i work with.

aaah ok!

Well to be honest I wouldn't be willing to pay for anything until I saw an example of your trade my friend!

Try doing your own hero or something and post us a link to show us what the quality would be!

I'll assume you clicked the link I provided, but you might of missed what I was pointing to, so here it is: Clickity 2

This is the banner from that site. That piece of metal (the lion's head) is basically my trade geared to Art instead of aerospace/automotive parts.

Just as a welder can make sculptures from steel, I could (possibly) do the same with my trade.

And as much as I'd like to show off my hero in metal, I must first further my knowledge of the program I'd use, not to mention the machine is very very expensive.

Any clearer TA?

Well to make my point clearer as well!

Yes. I would be willing to pay for that sort of art. I still wouldn't make it a deal signed in stone until I could see some of your work.

I understand that your just showing me the type of art you are referring to but it still isn't YOUR work.

I can't blame ya for checking the interest level before investing in a machine for it though!

Thats exactly what I'm checking for, and I'm well aware that the majority of people wont pay for something until they've seen the product beforehand.

Ya know TA, I'm starting to think you can smell a thread concerning possible fanart commissions

I'm with TA on this. As a newly arrived art...uh...lover, I'd like nothing better than to see my character brought to life in some medium or another. I think you're looking into doing something that could be really fun and rewarding for yourself. Taking your existing skills and adding a creative twist. You'll need lots and lots of practice before you're ready to start selling your pieces as commissions though. Feel free to practice with Frosty Femme and send me the pieces so I can show all my friends and get them jealous and want one of their own. I'd be helping you grow your hobby into a business! I want 30%.

your = Belonging to you.
you're = Contraction meaning "You are."
Ur = The name of an ancient Mesopotamian city.
ur = This is not a word.

no arguement on the fun and rewarding part. I enjoy my trade, but the usual use for it (production work *shudder*) i find rather boring.

I have already used my knowledge of machining to make little trinkets, rings and segments of a bracelet, but this was on a conventional machine (the user directly uses the machine, no PC interface to speak of) which would be fairly inexpensive in comparison. What I'd have to use here would be a machine worth over a hundred grand, not adding in tools and other things. Even if i were to relegate this to a "jobber shop" (a machine shop that takes outside contracts of work) the overhead would eaily be over 100$/hour.

Yeah I could see this as incredibly expensive, and while it'd be neat to have it done I don't think I'd want to get one. :-/ Very neat thingamajig though.

it is indeed a cool idea, but may receive a better reception if we had an actual example. perhaps you could do something for one of your characters and then post it so we could see the end product.~

Metal can't be a cheap material to work with can it? I guess my queston would be what would the estimated range that a plate would cost?

This is such a cool idea btw.

A 1 square foot by 1 inch thick aluminium plate goes for 120$ or so. could be wrong as i just did a real quick check with the first place that actually gave a price.

I'd have to check with some people i know for a better estimate of price, but this is all in the pre-pre-pre-pre-pre-planning stage.

A bit off topic...but is your icon a layout of DMT?

I am actually really looking forward to seeing one of your examples.

Maybe you should see how much it would cost to machine something smaller, like a 1 inch diameter 'button' or something?

With a 1 foot Square you could get 144 1-inch buttons out of it I would think. 12 X 12? :P That'd be kinda nifty.

Posted

While that may be true Rowr, having 1/144th of the space to fit something in is rather....well...small :P.

sure, it is possible, but the tools I'd need to do any detail at that level (even a simple outline) would be expensive, not to mention friggin small, along the lines of 0.050 inches or even smaller.

what I could do at that size though, would be a bunch of lil emblems (for example: the Archtype symbols). those wouldnt require any extra small tooling, but i think i'd have to get the OK from cryptic concerning that (or send em a batch as a bribe :P).

Well I guess it depends on the resolution of said machine. Couldn't you find a machine shop that already has this machine, just bring the designs and then they can do it, or rent it to you or something? I dunno.

What about doing it in wood, or something?

Or by hand! Hammer and chisel baby! :P

Maybe the OP could hook us up with a pic of something he's actually done. That might spout more interest.

He already said he hasn't done anything, just guaging interest. He did link to a page with an example of what -could- be done though.
