Well, I installed and have been giving the ATI6850 a workout...so far so good. The only thing i have to do is optimize the settings so as not to degrade the performance while still maintaining these lovely graphics. But that can be worked out as I go.
Thank you all the help. I would have been lost and frustrated likely still banging my head (stubbornly) against the wall of the 550 Ti problem. -

I actually RMA'd my first GTX460, and got the exact same issues with the new one.

ATI wise the 5770 are being replaced by the rebadged (i.e. its really a 5770) 6770. Same card higher price. Call it a marketing job, but its for people who don't know any better.
Ok, so there is the 6790 which is a small improvment over the 5770/6770. However, for just a little more cash a 6850 is a nice bump more. I would suggest the 6850 if you want an ATI card. 6790 cards are reject 6850s.
Nvidia I would say there are two choices. GTX 460 1GB its about $140 (make sure its 1GB) and a nice card. GTX 560 Ti is a good card for $210 (after rebates). Note: there is a GTX 560 card so make sure it has the Ti after it or you get a different chip. (Again, another case of Marketing preying on the unsuspecting buyer). I would suggest if you want an Nvidia card to get the 560 Ti

My 560 is just fricking awesome. The 560 is currently off the menu for me!
I'm inclined toward the Nvidia, but only because the two decent cards i've had were that brand and I know they work alright with my computer. Software aside in the case fo the 550, the graphics and low noise level were, well, incredible.
Looks like neither has folks shouting and waving about openGL the way the 550Ti did once I knew to look for it.
The only thing thta leans me away from the Nvidia is Cactus's thoughts on teh 400s and 500s all being bad with Vista. It would bite really hard in the nether regions if I brought a 460 home and had the same problem. I would feel the need for a serious /facepalm at that point. Maybe huddle in a corner and rock back and forth...you see why I moved away from working in computer tech..this stuff po's me easily and firmly!

Anyone have any thoughts on the Sapphire Radeon HD 5770?
Sapphire 100283-3L Radeon HD 5770 Video Card - 1GB GDDR5, PCI-Express 2.0, CrossFireX Ready, Dual DVI, Display Port, HDMI. I'm assuming the CrossFireX is regarding using two in tandem in a system? Not something i'll be worrying about anytime soon, if ever!
Looks like one card only requires 500Watts and i'm not coming across any mention of issues with CoX other than one guy who raved about it being fantastic with Ultra. I'll happily settle for being merely good!
I have no interest in putting myself back in this same position again any time soon. Bothering you folks once in a year with my idiocy is bad enough. -

That's unfortunate, but it doesn't happen to everyone. I've been playing for months with my GTX 465 without a single graphics or graphics driver error. On Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Before that, on a GTX 260. And before THAT, on a GTS 8800.
So I'm much more inclined to believe it is the operating system (Vista is still crap when it comes to video drivers) than the graphics card's chipset.
Also, your D: drive is almost full. Depending on where you have City of Heros installed, that could present an issue or two.

Thanks for your help. Talks with Nvidida seem to be going in circles. Big surprise. So, either tomorrow or Tuesday, after teh long weekend i'm going to tak this beautiful damn thing back and see about another.
I heard that the GTX460 isn't too bad and (so far) seems to be the least likely to smack me in the face with more problems.

Check out sites like www.hardwaresecrets.com and www.jonnyguru.com about PSUs. Telling people how much Watts the PSU is doesn't really say much. It just a number, make and model of the PSU matter. If its a low quality PSU then people might wonder about it. Too often people are extemely cheap out PSUs and find out the hard way.

Now, I'd have to ask the question, what if any mods have you made to your PC? It makes me wonder if you have enough power to even run the card. The machine came with IGP so did you later add in a card and if so, what was it before the 550 Ti?

I just replaced my monitor - was using a 19" the CRT the last few months after the 22"W Acer screen that came with the system died. Now I have an LG W2240.
Hmm, audio hasn't changed - run it so much with the sound off pr headphones on due to kid and wife being asleep that upgrading would have been a waste.
DVDW is factory.
The crappy WiFi signal i'm getting off my landlord is a another issue that oguht not to have any bearing on the vid card crashing .. well far as I know anyway!
Using the latest version of Vista, fully updated. Again, it came with the system. Despite the lack of problems i've had with Vista I would've have still preferred to stay with XP but <shrug> what you going to do. All new computers came with Vista at that time.
Honestly can't recall off hand any other changes i've made. -
Oh yeah, as soon as I get my act together i'm going to send a problem ticket into Nvidia, someone suggested that they always respond (eventually) and may have a suggestion. But going to go try that beta driver first.

The fact that I goofed and got a card that won't play nice with my system, well that's just my own damn fault for not checking out all the info before buying.
What does annoy me is that the card was on the approved Ultra list. I know that it doesn't affect all systems, but damn, just a casual mention there would have saved me some time and trouble.
Of course in the end it comes back to being my fault!
Too bad there's not a software fix or way around. <sigh> -

Ty, this is what I get for rushing a buy on the way home from work and not checking it out further here. The orignal one I was looking at was the 5770 but they were sold out. This one seemed to check out at a similair level with no bad reviews after a quick search. Damn...now i've got to take it back and see what's what. Dammit! lol Cheers to both of you for your help!

Hi, i've been experiencing some annoying crashes with my video card. It started out with error 4's and error 8's but now appears to be only the latter.
I have an EVGA GTX 550 Ti that i've updated all the drivers on, changed the gloabl power management to maximun rather than reactive and still it crashes.
It does this when I solo or team. Sometimes 30 seconds in, sometimes 15 minutes.
I was having trouble with outside games crashes but I think i've got it past that (not seen one since yesterday).
The card is fine otherwise, great graphics, runs quietly most of the time.
Any advice would be appreciated but don't be too shocked if I ask for it to be dummed down a little as i'm not that up on my tech speak anymore (abandoned most of my knowledge abck in the DOS changeover to windows days).

For any Blaster I mostly just recommend (as others have said) stocking up on purple and red inspirations and, if possible, immobilizing him in the lava. In pretty much any Blaster vs. Elite Boss fight the trick with the Blaster is not the application of damage but staying alive long enough to use it. Immobilizing him helps a lot with this since he can't use his powerful melee attacks.
Well the big advice I'd give with Traps is to make sure you set down a Poison Gas Trap and try to keep him in the cloud for the duration. That should neuter his regen enough for you to take him out. I'd still recommend destroying the clones since they also buff his damage resistance. Ideally with a Trapper you'd also want to immobilize him but for a Traps/Dual Pistol Defender I think power choices are likely to be tight enough that you can't really take Web Grenade.
I did try the Poison Gas Trap, as well as Acid and Caltrops. Even an Envenomed Dagger. Maybe I just kept having bad runs of luck. Yeah, my epic I went with Electric not Munitions..wanted the Armour and the Thunder Strike was a pleasant surprise. Likely I just mucked around too much and let too many clones build up. If i'd had any sense i'd havve buzzed off and come back when Trap had resettled himself and taken out the clones one at a time. Anyway, ty again i'll give your advice a try next time.

I did a mini-guide for this a while back.
AR/Dev should be easy. Buy Purples and Reds from Ramiel plus a couple of BFs just in case. Eat 3 or 4 Purples to cap your Def and, say 4 Reds, then knock him into the lava with Buckshot and/or M30 Grenade, jump down to the ground outside the lava and shoot him full of holes, using KB to put him back in the lava every time he climbs out. Renew your Purples if it takes more than 60 seconds, which it shouldn't. Ignore /Dev except Web Grenade (Edit: this isn't necessary, but if you can Immob him in the lava that's great, unfortunately you'll have about 10s where he'll be lose and protected from KB - it may just be better to stand on the lip of the lava pool so he stands in it trying to attack you), don't bother to chase the clones as you should be able to finish him off without worrying about them.
Sadly this /traps is a Dual Pistols Defender, something I do enjoy but am more than willing to admit it occasionally lacks under some conditions, like this one. Even when I was keeping him in the lava using knockback (ammo toggle off, vet reward blackwand and epic pool Thunder Strike) I was doing so little actual damage that he would eventually leap out and away and i'd start over again.
Made me recall why I used to help others so many times using a couple of scrappers and a archer/mm blaster who were alpha'd back during the first few months of it. -

I'm curious if a complete list of the salvage for every buff was ever complied? It'd be handy to keep on hand so I could keep a certain amount of useful salvage in the base.
If not I guess i'll have to go through and list a few I may find useful on occasion.

(granted some need a little coaxing to actually step into the area, mostly those EBs who just blast from range. use cloaking device for stealth, and place the mines at the top of the ramp. Swallow a few purples/oranges aggro him, then sit at the bottom of the ramp. He jogs to the top to get LOS, and BOOM! Instant crippled and talkative trapdoor!)
NOTE: This method is not for the impatient. It works, but the mines take FOREVER to set up.
In the end I got my Alpha through the trials then eventually went back with my 3rd tier Lore pets and booted him around in no time. I would have just dropped d the mission but didn't see that option appear. -
