Ah, to Hel with them all. I wanted to see a Norse god on screen, even if it was through Kirby's twisted vision.

I'm just hoping they don't make a big thing of it. Or mention it at all for that matter.

    Grrr.

But the high level stuff does remove all that lovely grey morality and 'lesser of two evils' stuff, replacing it with dirt dull boring moustache twirling.
Just quoting this to say I agree. I loved the shades of grey in Going Rogue but with the high level stuff, it doesn't matter if you want to serve your Emperor or not, you have to fight him whether you're a hero, a villain or a loyal subject. And believe me, my villains are getting real sick of serving the greater good. I'm looking forward to when I can serve a greater evil. Anyone got Darrin Wade's phone number?
  3. I'm not going to go into the roleplay aspects as others have covered that and I'll raise my hand as someone who routinely ignores parts of the game such as the names on Enhancements and the ridiculous Dr Brainstorm explanations for powerset proliferation.

No, for me, the problem is wider than just that. It's that a major strength of this game is customisation, to be able to create the hero or villain you want. And over the years, it's been a case of one step forward, two steps back.

Villains were locked into their Patrons, having to endure the Patron symbol scrawled all over their avatar if they wanted an epic shield. Some powersets were so hidiously coloured, it was hard to pass them off as anything else. If you were a Radiation Emission user, you got to be bright green all the time (good luck explaining that one!). If you were a street brawler, you had to accept using flashy kicks rather than a straight punch to the face. It was just how things were.

And then things changed. We were able to colour our powersets and let our imaginations run riot. I, who had never touched Rad due to the horrible colour, rolled three Rad characters within the space of a week now it could be magic, or fire or nanites or whatever. Villains could respec out of their Patrons or even better, take an epic powerset that had no horrible symbols or lore requirements to them. And that street brawler guy? Now he could be a proper street fighter, swapping all of those flashy martial arts moves for practical punches to the head. Awesome! What a way to fire peoples' imaginations and unlock previously unattractive sets to roleplayer and non-roleplayer alike! (Even if it did mean getting completely obscured when some PuG team-mate shoves a completely black Fire Shield buff on me. Grrr...!)

And now we come to the Incarnate content. And suddenly all of that freedom, all of that creativity gets stuffed back into the box and we get shoved down one very specific, very limiting storyline that dictates where our powers are coming from. I agree that the Lore slot is the worst culprit here, the others at least can be passed off as orbital cannons or new techniques but there's very little wriggle room for creativity and that's what I'm finding stifling. I don't mind running certain arcs to gain new shinys, I'll happily spend an hour blasting through the ITF for my Roman armour. But this is a long, ongoing story that I have no love for while other, potentially better stories go neglected (or get hideously retconned into the 'new lore' - Vincent Ross, I'm looking at you) and I doubt it's going to be over anytime soon. And that's what makes me sad.

Personally, if I ever get to meet the Well, I'm going to toss a whole load of sodium down it, just to make it pay for putting me through this.
  4. Given how I shudder each time I zone into Croatoa to see Gaelic butchered before my eyes, I'm not sure I'd really want to see the Devs' take on other branches of mythology.

That said, I reckon Incarnate content should have some god bashing involved so I can't see them stopping anytime soon. But I'd still rather fight Rularuu than another mythical figure.
  5. I'm just going to say that I'm grateful for an EU event and the efforts that the organiser(s) are putting into it. If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't have an EU meet at all.

    What's being ignored?
    - The shivans being scouts. They seem to have no tie in to the well at all.
    - Twilight's Son. If I'm remembering correctly, part of TCS ended up using Kheldians to power starships... aside from the ridiculousness of this from a purely rational standpoint (and the size of, oh, the universe,) it has never had any tie to the well, Incarnates, etc... but ties into an extraterrestrial/extragalactic threat like the Shivans.
    - Mender Silos comes from how far in the future... and what does this have to do with him being Nemesis, among other things? It's even mentioned in Ramiel's Q&A selections, so you *know* the writers are aware of the connection.

... frankly, it seems like a continuation of one of the things I don't like about VEATs, namely how it seems that the writing being given such short shrift these days.
Very well said. The whole plot screams 'retcon' to me, crowbarring in Praetoria because it's the new shiny with little regard for the overall plot.

I'd far rather see a number of huge threats rather than trying to smash them altogether. I'd like to see the Coming Storm, Rularuu or even the Rikti as separate threats rather than have them all be part of the dismal Well storyline.
  7. Welcome back. Hope you like how things have changed.

It was a great idea. We're working on them for a sever list merge now.
  8. There's a half decent pub within walking distance of the place and it does decent food too.
  9. As someone who plays strange hours and does not enjoy large raids but does enjoy small, fun, story based missions, this is an excellent suggestion.

    I heartily approve.
  10. To be honest, the overwhelming focus on this area of lore when there are other, far more interesting parts out there is making me consider the future of my subscription for the first time in five years. I'll wait and see what else i20 contains but it may well be time to take a break for a few issues.

I'm not sure I'd want a TF to be lore free, I like stories. But anything other than Goatee Paragon would be very welcome.

I don't know if this helps but I have spent the last day reconsidering what to do with my time in game now that I've virtually given up on the Incarnate system and one of the decisions I made was to spend more time playing through other people's story arcs in AE.

So there'll be one more player out there to entertain at least.

Think Praetorian Portal Corp - for our Portal Corp missions, we go to other dimensions to fight threats or invetsigate potential threats, as well as saving and helping people form other dimensions.
But imagine that as loyalist content, with players becoming Incarnate war leaders in Tyrant's invasion armies, helping him expand his empire across the multiverse.
You could an arc or TF where you literally conquered a world, or totally destroyed one.
You could lead NPC pets like War Walkers to attack cities or military facilities on other worlds - you could take personal charge of assassination operations on leading figures on various worlds who were resisting Tyrant's onslaught - you could have misisons to enslave entire populations, or totally wipe out opposing armies.
Making the multiverse threatening force a human one - which has also allowed players to serve it at lower levels - allows for the possibility of players being able to serve it at higher levels too, and deliver the kind of cosmic evil content that you can't get when working for Recluse.
The chances of getting to be that evil I'd put at about 10,000,000 to 1. Much more likely that both Loyalists and Villains will get strongarmed into having to team up with goody two shoes YET AGAIN to save the universe.

Getting to actually fight on Cole's side would go a long way to redeeming this story though in my eyes.

Although, truth be told, I still find Cosmic Cole stupid and I'd rather be fighting Rularuu as well.

I've already decided the incarnate system just isn't for me. I already have a hard enough time keeping up with all the various forms of currency already in game as is and I really, really dislike large scale raiding and grinding...

    HOWEVER.

I was here for the forum meltdown over ED. I got all worked up in a frenzy with everyone else over it. Hindsight and all, I was wrong. Very wrong. ED stands to me as one of the best improvements to the game to date and we couldn't see it as more than a nerf at the time...

I've spent more money on this game over the past 7 years than I have on any other gaming platform. Ever. There's a reason for that.
    Faith.
I've always had faith in our Dev team. Though I may not be excited about everything they give us, in the end they always end up delivering the goods. Though for the 1st time, I question the direction the game is heading and start to wonder if COH2 would be as epic as I've always imagined, or just a clone of the raidfests flooding the market. I still have faith that WW and crew understand what sets us apart from the others and will come back around once this system is fully realized.
Patience. Over the years I've learned to be patient. Considering ED and GD, I realize I could've left in a tizzy and lost out on years of great times and I'm thankful I was patient. Because in the end they always deliver.

As a final note. To my fellow players who are concerned that this Issue isn't giving us anything. I disagree. Though I may not care for the content or the system, I understand that over the years quite a large sum of our playerbase has been lured away for lack of an endgame.
If by some small measure this system brings them back and I have an even easier time finding teams and start to see Atlas filled with newblood then I consider it to be Full of Win.
You have single handedly summed up my feelings about the i20 announcement. Although I welcome the new Task/Strike Forces, my dislike of Praetoria and the Incarnate system grows the more I learn. So I will just keep going, levelling my old toons, enjoying AE content, enjoying existing arcs and be patient for the love affair with Praetoria to die down.

  17. It occurs to me that now I've played through Ramiel's arc more times that is comfortable, we now know that the Well can take over Incarnates who chose the short path to power.

If Cole isn't Cole and is actually the Well taking over his body, I think it might want to make me fight him a bit more. I'd be able to express some of my dissatisfaction with the Well physically.
  18. [[Inserts standard rant about how the EU get less and yet pay the same money.]]

    [[Signs suggestion, leaves thread.]]

(Yep, same here, all 36 slots on Union filled, most on Defiant filled, nowhere to go from here. Poo. )

    Soooo /Ice ...

I have a Mind/Ice Dom at 43. I paired them together because of stacking -recharge but they don't really synergise very well.

Ice is a melee focussed set with three melee attacks and a slow aura. It's damage is good but it will eat your Endurance for breakfast. You do get Power Boost though which is comes back up quickly and does lovely things to your Primary.

Oh and just to let you know, I have an Earth/Fire and he completely outshines the Mind/Ice in terms of control and damage.

    Plenty.

There's always someone who wants to invade our petty little dimension and enslave us. Tyrant can get to the back of the queue.

Rularuu wants to EAT us for the gods' sake. No enslavement, no tyranny, just devouring.

The Coming Storm apparently likes to use Kheldians as rocket fuel, what on earth will it do with humans?

The Hamidon wants to reshape us into his version of nature, corrupting our bodies and minds to that we can be one with him.

Those are real threats that Incarnates should be facing. Not just some mad emperor and his tin man army.

Oh, and time travelling, alien-empowered, super-soldier Nazis. They're always fun too.
  22. Welcome to the club.

CoX has got some absolutely superb villains that are screaming for more content and yet instead we have potentially the dullest villain group issue after issue. I have no idea of what else is in i20 but I really do hope there's more than just more Praetoria.

I'd far rather be punching Rularuu in the face than getting one shotted by guard towers for my Incarnate status.
