    Not to mention that the first AV you come in contact with in a story arc (Dr. V) has no mention of his precense in the mission he is placed in. The mission is about ending the Vahz threat, but there is no suggestion in the mission text that you will be facing an Arch Villian or that you should bring some help. And this one has been around since when? Launch?

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Last time I did that mission, Dr. V. was not responsible for the plague, not necessary to the completion of the mission, and essentially a surprise red herring. Now he's still a bad guy, and if you can beat him with your friends, more power to you, but I don't see a flaw in that mission spec. If he was integral to the completion, I'd agree, but as it is, the mission is fine (unless it's changed, darn that dynamic environment!)

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Whether or not defeating Dr. V is the objective of the mission is irrelevant. The point is you suddenly find yourself faced with your first chance to fight an AV, and you are not forewarned about it. I am curious how many people made the assumption that since they were able to solo all of their mission to that point, made the mistake of trying to solo Dr. V?

    And who in their right mind would pass up their first chance to face their first AV? Sorry not buying your response.

    It has been stated previously by the DEV's that contacts should let you know when a group will be necessary for a mission.

    Oh, but they DID let me know. AFTER I accepted the mission. That's NOT a bug.

    Statesman on forced grouping/solo'ing

    Statesman on solo'ing, solo'ing missoins, and the difference of various AT's ability to solo.

    Statesman on making the game harder, and why.

    Statesman saying he still wants people to be able to solo, and other stuff.

    Statesman explains again about making the game harder.

    ~~~~
    Darn that pesky research proving your conspiracy theory wrong!
    Forced grouping would mean I was back in EQ, where it could take 1min to 3hrs to find a group. Having to find a group, or 1 or 2 other people out of every couple missions to help take down a boss isn't forced grouping. Besides, go to your local contact, stock up on lucks and you shouldn't have much problem anyway.
    You know its funny in all those quotes, States keeps mentioning the desirablity of Street hunting for would be soloer's
    a hero can always hunt the streets and stop some crime there. That was always the intent of city zones.
    Every Archetype, if they don't feel like teaming up, can at least go out and fight crime on the city streets
    Our goal is for you never to run out of missions or things to do... "street hunting" should be an absolute last resort...
    [/ QUOTE ]
    Kinda makes you wonder if they ever talk to one and other huh? I mean Posi says bug instance of 5th, followed by States saying not too. States says soloing should be viable for streethunting, and Posi says streethunting should be an absolute last resort.
    I posted this in the tanker forum in a thread about this article. I provide the meat of the article with some flavor context. The details below are about as accurate as the article.
    --Cut to scene at Dignews.com as Daniel "Monk" Pelfrey prepares to write about his recent interview.--
    DP: Ahh, after I chug one more bottle of NyQuil, I'll be ready to roll!
    *Starts typing while swaying unsteadily in his chair*
    We talk with Crytic Studios Rick Emmerst about the upcoming City For Heroes update
    Yesterday I had the opportunity to speak with Rick Emmerst, Flavored Lead-Based Paint Designer and Creative Director at Crypto Studios, the developers behind City For Heroes. On December 14, the world will change as Calgon City will have a new set of villains, new powers and new public restrooms. This is one of the most expansive free expansions possibly ever to expand a MMORPG, and one that dramatically expands the overall story of City For Heroes forward or doesn't.
    First off, the 5th Element will be going away on vacation to planet Phloston. Rumblers have been rumbling recently of a possible overthrow, and this is indeed the case. "Shadow puppets” of 5th Element members have taken over and the 5th Element will cease to exist. Although their charity luncheons will be sorely missed, in its place will be an organization that calls itself “The Pencil” and where the 5th Element was a rather stand-alone type of group, players will be able to see "The Pencil" partner up or ally themselves with some of the more technological orientationalated villains in Calgon City, for example, "The Erasers".
    ----------------------------------------
    So in closing, Yes, I am in fact very bored.
    As for "Ninja Nerf", how can it be a Ninja Nerf, if it was stated that this was being changed. He also stated that it is on the TEST server to be TESTED, and will be CHANGED if they see that it needs to be. If you want to continue this, lets take it to the Official thread for the Scapper Changes.
    [/ QUOTE ]
    Just like a Ninja (um hence the frequently used allegory) it came out of now where and decimated everything in its path. Secondly, sure I got no problem taking it to the official thread (sorry Xmas lovers), just wish States would too. Would be nice if he actually posted something about Scrappers in a thread about Scrappers for a change.
    Have fun and sorry for the temporary hijacking all. You may now return your seats and chair tables to their upright gleeful Xmashanukwanizica positions.
    [Get a clue, you know how long Tank had to adopt to the constant changes to our AT. We cried(more than others), but we sucked it up,pulled the spandex on, and got on with our roles. .
    [/ QUOTE ]
    Hmm lets see if I can answer that question for you.
    *opens the Dev Diary*
    Lets see, first we have the "Tanker I need your Insight" posted on 11/19 (hmm..Scrappers didnt get this) 2 Statesy Posts there.
    Followed by the "Yes I have been reading the Boards" started on 11/20 (hmm next day responses..hmm Scrappers didnt get this). 5 Statsey Posts in that thread.
    Followed by the "My morning with Geko" started 11/22 (hmm Scrappers didnt get that). 11 Statesy Posts in that thread.
    Finalized with "Tanker and Scrapper Tweek" (hmm wait a tick...How the hell did Scrappers get dragged into this???) on 12/02. One Statesy post there.
    So essentially in the course of 4 days, States asked you what you wanted, you got a total of 18 posts from him, and in the end 10 days from when it started you got exactly what you wanted and then some. Not to mention that this all took place on the Actual tanker forum.
    So now by all means cry me a river how you poor poor tankers are being so egregiously mistreated.
    Scrappers on the other hand got not a tweak, but a Ninja Nerf , that we are asked to test, but cant even test properly because they forgot to reset the mobs on test, and most of us can't respec to make use of the new changes, and god forbid properly test them. AND in the same 4 Days, whereas tanks got 18 friggin posts from States, we get a quick, snippy, backhanded reference to the Scrap issue in a friggin thread about Xmas, where he essentially says CoV and PM's are more demanding of his time? And you don't think we have a reason to be pissed? SHEESH what a Putz!
    If anything, the 5th Column was the group that MOST needed to have it's storyline advanced. I must say, the Nazi theme, while a decent theme for a villain group, does not provide for terribly interesting themed storylines...alien posessed nazis now, THAT is something to get excited about.
    [/ QUOTE ]
    Fine then where is the Advancement? They weren't "advanced" they were replaced, and that is a very very big difference. Listen, as much as I loved the 5th, and abhor Das Centrino and his gang of Cobra Commandos and Pro Wrestlers from outerspace, I could perhaps forgive their silliness if there was in fact a storyline that presented this transfer of power, without totally irradicating the history that my character has grown up with. The problem lies not in what changed near as much with how it was changed, because in the end it wasn't advanced, it was changed, nothing less. nothing more.
    Have fun !
    PS: I also dont cotton too much to being told by the Devs that its White when in fact its very very much Gray.
    A Neo-Fascist by any other name would still smell as sweet, would it not?
    [/ QUOTE ]
    If it was a rose and written by Shakespeare maybe, but I like my Neo-fascists sans the Dishrag and Cobra Commander wannabeishness, and especially not seeming like they finally figured out what happens in that 1000 monkey/typewriter scenario. This one just smells like [censored} to me. Now about that pie?
    Have fun !
  12. [ QUOTE ]
    I just said this wasn't because of the German market. If it was, the 5th would be gone completely and the replacement wouldn't just be another pseudo-Nazi organization. Oh, and there wouldn't have been evidence of the Council's existence since beta.
    [/ QUOTE ]
    I would be very very interested in seeing this evidence that you are referring to. Got a source? Screenshot? Story Arc stuff? If you are referring to the Nictus/Requiem connection in his discription, okay, I am with you there, but ya know something that strikes me there is that, well that reference explains why he changed is name from Ridolfo Unzzano to Requiem, but ya know to date I haven't seen or read any reference to why he changed his name to "The Center". Or if Requiem isnt "The Center" then who the heck is this guy and what happened to Requeim?
    Even when you see the new story line where you first encounter this "Center" there is no mention of him having once been Requiem, nor any story about what happened to Requiem, and last I checked I haven't read anything to that effect either, and from what I have seen there are in fact people who have finished the Striga Coucil based missions and associated TF and they didn't make any mention of him, or the take over for that matter.
    If by evidence you mean something else, I apologize, and await your presentation of such.
    [ QUOTE ]
    As someone else said, Cryptic knew full well they were going to sell the game in Germany from day one. Why put in an "illegal" group if you're just going to turn around and take them out? Also, German law only pertains to specific Nazi imagery, such as swastikas and so forth. The 5th have none of these.
    [/ QUOTE ]
    First off I think you are presupposing facts not in evidence in this regards? Exactly how many American made MMO's have servers designed specifically for play outside the US? In that I mean, how many have taken the trouble to launch EU versions of said game? Things may have changed since I played them, but answer me this? Does UO have a EU based Server set? Does DAoC, does SWG? I would assume EQ does right? To be honest I dont' know the answer to any of those questions, so it goes out to everyone.
    Where I think you have presupposed in error is that how could a company plan for the addition of what I shall refer to as extra-continental server support, until such a time as its determined whether or not the game is succesful enough to justify the expense of such a venture?
    This is not an issue of German Law, I think that has been established Ad Nauseum already. What I suggest and have always adherred to is that initially the 5th was never meant to be changed because at the time of their implimentation there was no evidence to support the need for servers outside the continental US. Obviously the game has become a huge hit and therefor now requires such, so as to better support its overseas clients. In a recent intereview one Michael Crouch, a PR Rep for NCSoft gave an interview where he specically stated "We're also rolling out the game in Europe and we've making some adjustments for the world market"
    This change, whether required legally or not, is in fact one of those changes, that was apparently decided upon by the Money Men at NCSoft, not by States et all. I think we are beyond arguing whether or not the 5th would fall under German Law or not (for the record I agree with you that this was a non issue), the question remains however, why if not needed did the change get made? We were told that this was done to move the story forward, but as evidenced by what we have seen to date, there is well, no evidence of that. We were promised two things by States "A Council and a War", we have the Council (yuck), but where is our War, or more importantly (to me anyways), our STORY that moves us Forward?
    Have Fun !
    PS: I apologize if this issue is hijacking the thread, that was not my intent, honest!
  13. [ QUOTE ]
    ...Yeah, yeah. You win. I give up.
    Can we eat some pie now?
    And how is that retconning? That's just changing the mission for future players, probably so they aren't confused about the 5th and the Council. Wouldn't it only be retconning if they changed the souvenir I have?
    [/ QUOTE ]
    Please, please dont make me regret giving you the benefit of the doubt in regards to knowing what Retconning is, at this late date bub. Seriously go have some pie, obviously your blood sugar is low at the moment. Yeah that's it!
    On a more serious note. What you suggest regarding confusion is all fine and dandy for "Joe Bloe New Guy" who buys the game after Issue 3 goes live, but um, wait a sec? What about the 200K+ of us who are here now, havent gotten to see every scrap of content yet, and have been financially supporting this game since launch? Um, don't we count for something? Or more simply, what about us existing players who happen to like our Neo Fascist Villian organizations as they are right now instead of some Vanilla, dishrag wearing Cobra Commando look-a-like? If they leave the existing badges and souvenirs that you have already collected the same, then what good is a letter from Requiem, if you never get the chance to face him? How is that less confusing?
    When you change everything from how it was to something different, right down to the history behind the story, that is what Retconning is all about. This is akin to rewriting Captain America to where instead of facing the Red Skull and using a Sheild, he faced The Red Coat and used a Flintlock? See the similarities? Same Hero, Same Villian, just repackaged as something totally different. Welcome to Retconning 101.
    Now about that pie? Will you have Blueberry or Apple? I suggest the Blueberry, I hear the Apple has fallen pretty far from the tree.
    Have fun !
  14. [ QUOTE ]
    I know what retconning is, and I was pretty sure that it didn't change the souvenir that I had... let me go double check.
    If it did, then I retract all my statements and need a bonk on the head.
    [/ QUOTE ]
    Glad to see giving you the benefit of the doubt wasn't a wasted effort.
    [ QUOTE ]
    EDIT: I checked, and indeed, I still have my letter from Requiem, describing my adventure, same as before.
    [/ QUOTE ]
    Dude, seriously, you are aware that the Ubelman Arc now presents you with a letter from someone called "The Center", not Requiem, and the story involves Civil War Era Grannies not trying to change the history of WW2 Right? I mean heck someone (sorry forget your name and the name of your thread) went so far as to post pics of the story as its told now as well as the changed souvenier, for petes sake. You do realize that Axis America is now Council America right? Exactly what part of that is not retconning? Honestly, do you think we are making this stuff up?
    Have fun !
  15. [ QUOTE ]
    Uh, I don't think they were retconned into the Council. The Council is made up of the Nictus-controlled people, etc, of which Requiem was one from the start. It would appear that him and the rest of his troops decided now was the time to take over. How is that retconning?
    [/ QUOTE ]
    Yes and the "The Center" and his band of merry Cobra Commandoes broke into Portal Corp and changed every mission and Story Arc to erase any evidence of the 5th ever existing in this or any other Dimension, and essentially rewrote the history of all worlds, because it was something to do on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Is this the story you are refereing too? You are familiar with the before and after look of Story Arcs like Ubbelman and Axis Amerika right?
    Seriously bub, no offense meant, but unless you are really up to speed on everything that has been changed, you really should try and put off making statements like this one you posted. I mean I am giving you the benefit of the doubt here that you know what retconning is right?
    Have fun !
  16. [ QUOTE ]
    I think I've just been put off by the whole thing because it has been such a departure from the usual level of development we've grown accustomed to from Cryptic. Up until now, every new Issue has included new stuff, new content. Regardless of the reasoning for the whole change, it just seems a little weak and ill-wrought compared to what they've been able to accomplish thus far.
    [/ QUOTE ]
    This pretty much sums up my feelings on the changes as well. For me what made it even more distasteful was being fed this "Bible" line, which to me implied advancement of actual story, with purpose, when on closer inspection the only story changes made were retconning of the 5th into the Council. As stated earlier, I have yet to find, nor read anything on Test that explains this "story". I am still looking for it.
    Have fun !
    *cough*
    Just thought I'd chip in my 2 inf. here...
    "Mission Customization" doesn't refer to the mission difficulty slider, but rather to the new mission art\graphics\etc. in certain missions.
    Example: Lous Garage, mission in a low level clockwork arc, now *looks* like a garage.
    [/ QUOTE ]
    *cough cough*
    Just though I'd refund you your 2 inf. here...
    Yeah that Lou's garage thing was a nice change in Issue 2, only problem is I think we are refering to Issue 3 here not issue 2. And sorry but if they add additional design elements to existing missions (which is a great thing btw), but players have outleveled that content already (for instance the new art for Dr. V's lair) well that hardly makes it available for all does it?
    What does Statesman mean by "Council"?
    [/ QUOTE ]
    Replacement villain group for 5th column.
    [/ QUOTE ]
    So the game can be sold in Germany.
    [/ QUOTE ]
    Hasn't this been disproven about six times by now?
    The Council are no less Nazi-like than the 5th. How does replacing once neo-Nazi group with another make the game sell better in Germany?
    Addendum: The 5th aren't gone, either. You can still see them in PI (and reportedly IP).
    [/ QUOTE ]
    And how does replacing Vanilla with Chocolate make the story move forward when there is nothing in the missions storywise explaining what happened and or why? Leastwise none that I have heard about or seen in the missions I have done on Test. Sorry but this is the same exact Ice Cream cone, not even a different flavor just added food coloring. So why the Food Coloring?
    Have fun !
    PS: This kind of thinking reminds me of an old Sunday School song we used to be forced to sing. I will adjust it as appropriate for this instance:
    Yep - we've been going back and customizing a bunch of early level stuff. One of the big assets to City of Heroes is that players LOVE to roll up and play tons of characters. As a result, I want to make sure that the old content gets freshened up.
    To sum up: on every expansion, we'll be customizing art & software for many pre-existing missions. So sometimes, you'll see something new in something you've done before.
    [/ QUOTE ]
    Is there any specific reason why some of these new enchanced missions can't be applied to all the missions States? For instance things like the glowies that you have to attack instead of click, or the villain specific art in door missions?
    I have horrible Alt-itis, so I have seen alot of the changes with my new characters, but I would really love to see them with my more advanced characters too. I was kinda curious why they weren't made accessible at all levels. Its mostly just an artwork skin right?
