Well, Comrade Hero has been baked...
No photos at this stage since he's a dark, blotchy mess due to the baking process. Hope to bring you some updated images soon-ish.

Quote:Just a bust of the the upper body. Originally I was going to go with full body, but settled on bust because the height of 20cm-25cm (7.9in - 9.8in) for full body would be the same as the bust.Comrade Hero looks awesome. I saw this on deviant art and definately had to add to my watch list. I love the texturing of the costume and the look of the hair on this sculpture.
Is this going to be a bust of the upper body or will this end up with the full body?
Ergo, Shannon was able to pack more meat (so to speak) into developing a larger upper body bust. -
Yeah, I'm pretty impressed with that as well. I gave Shannon specific real world examples of 'soft' body armor materials currently in used/being trialled by the US and Russian Armed Forces and he did well to make the costume look realistic without appearing to be either leather or spandex.

Quote:It's taken Shannon about 100 hours working with Clay and Super Sculpey Polymer to get this far - although he's pointed out that he had minor setbacks with some of the clay and a lot of time was spent trying to get the body proportions correct.Whoa. That is incredible. Did the artist tell you what's next? This process is fascinating.
Anyway, next step is to bake the sculpture. I'm not sure how long that will take.
Shannon's father will be doing the painting. Primer, undercoat and full color paint-job.
The project as a whole is a Father-Son collaboration between the pair. -
Updates from Shannon. Comrade Hero as of May 1, 2010:

Six years already? The biggest impression for me made in this forum was and is the incredible amount of talent that has been showcased, and the fantastic progression of artists that have gone from strength to strength over the years.
While it's great to have one of the "Troika" showcase artists that I personally decided to commission based on what the did with CoX characters, it's been great watching the development of artistic talent - you know who you are, and I can't name everyone.

Quote:I really should have thought more about the thread title.... Nobody really wants to see Comrade Hero "tackle out" so to speak... at least not in this family friendly environment!I'm glad I'm not seeing Comrade Hero's bits and pieces like I first thought. But those pieces are quite nice.

Received two new pieces today of Comrade Hero
Very pleased with both!

Quote:You're most welcome, Tovarisch.Oh, I'd be remiss if I didn't throw a big "thanks!" Comrade Hero's way, specifically for pointing out JOrtega on DA; that looks like it'll cost some decent scratch, but looks like it'd be perfect for a more full-blown piece.
Благодарит пук, камрада!
These are the two images that got me interested in JOrtega's work, and his prices are rather agreeable:

Always a pleasure to see the delightful new pieces of Kat art you receive
-
Hit up Bayani or Thor's Assassin on deviantART.
Both liaise with many artists, and both of their namesake signature CoX characters are male.
My own character, Comrade Hero is male (the last time I checked) and I haven't had too much trouble commissioning artists. Don't be afraid to ask an artist you particularly like if they do draw male characters and in the style you want.
I recently approached David Ortega and Javier Orabich to do Comrade Hero pieces based on what I saw in their galleries. I provided information about Comrade Hero and let them decide if it was something they would be interested in. The worst that can happen is that the artist says no. In this case both were interested enough to say yes.
As for Golden or Silver Age, I know that Jet Amago on deviantART can do it. His Kirby-ish tribute cover for Comrade Hero:

Comrade Hero would love a new signature for 2010. Resistance based if possible.
Drop me a note here or on deviantART athttp://supermaorifulla.deviantart.com
Thanks for your consideration.

"Contempt of Courtship" is one of my favorites pieces in Bayani's gallery. Jen Walters in flirtatious lawyer mode is classic.

Quote:I certainly remember that!
GG,
You probably remember this on I started a while back. If you're serious about pursuing a Zbrush version lemme know and I can talk about what's involved.
And yes, am interested. Note me here or on deviantART. -
Quote:To be fair to Shannon, the guideline for my 'real life' Comrade Hero is based on the action hero I grew up with as a kid and teenager - Arnold. The photo manipulated one on the right *almost* looks right but I think the shoulders need to be built up a little and broadened. It looks awesome as is and the proportions are great for a regular guy...they're just not quite superheroic.
I gave Shannon Arnold Schwarzenegger's bodybuilding competition form measurements and the fantastic ZBrush images from Luc Bégin's Schwarzenegger Project .
Tough call though - how do you determine what are regular guy proportions as opposed to superhero proportions? Look at Superman in the comics, and then compare the actors who have played him on screen. No physical comparison there.
Kudos to Shannon for the great work so far.

The difficulty in trying to get the head to body proportion ratio right. Shannon's still working on this. Progress update as of April 25, 2010.
Current progress:
And what the proportions should come out like:

Very, very nice collection! Thanks for sharing.
-
And I'll keep updating... Shannon confirmed the process will take a while. Basically adding layer upon layer to build up the physique and add the costume details.

Ayup, Shannon was mentioning bulking Comrade Hero up to increase his beefcake quota.
On a completely different tangent. I know a lot of people who work with Poser/DAZ and Maya, but I always admired the jaw-dropping work that can be done in ZBrush. If I knew a decent modeler who worked in that format I'd also get Comrade Hero done in that. -
Shanon just posted this. Arms are attached. Musculature size isn't proportionate at this early stage.
