If I was to make a tank without taunt as the concept but still wanted to hold the maximum amount of agro I'd take Ice Armour and Fire Melee.
Ice Armour has two auras, one of which is the best aura for holding agro and fire has the most AoEs. AoEs help with gauntlet so its all good

So which tank sets would you preffer if you were to take taunt? Out of interest -

possible endurance problems.

Ah i have heard alot about this with the dark set- as a little add on any tips for overcoming this- i.e. stamina slots, end modifications ect? -
Ok i have posted here before about which scrapper defencive set i should have.
I would like something challenging and teamable, but able to solo a tiny bit at a heroic-rugged level when teams are scarce.
I havent been a fan of scrappers thus far but i would really like to find one i enjoy.
I would preffer one of the following sets:
Defensive- Dark or fire (not WP, invun, SR or regen as i have either tried them or dont perticularly like them)
Offensive- Spines, katana, dark or claws
I am however flexibe and open to suggestions! So if anyone could let me know what they would pick and why or even what a person wouldnt pick and why. Cheers -

Judging by the edits of earlier posts there seems to have been an awful lot of taunting going on in this thread already perhaps it's better if we all agree to disagree. As someone who started as a soloer, and did a bit of scranking when invited to a team, when I finally learnt the concept behind a tanks team responsabilities I took Taunt and have never looked back, to me now not taking taunt would be like missing my right arm! but as tanks aren't essential in most situations and as a tank even without taunt will grab a significant amount aggro I think refusing to team with tank who has chosen not to take taunt is at best somewhat l33tist an attitude I personally don't favour.
But everyone enjoy your tanking taunted or tauntless and remember at the end of the day we are all just here to have a buzz. All the best all

Ok so i am new to these forums (ha go figure) and i'll admit i wasnt at all clear in what i wanted to gain from this thread when i posted. I origionally posted to prove a point to a friend who said taunt was usless. On the flip side i pointed out proper tanks all have taunt.
I will hold up my hands and say I WAS WRONG.
So on that note i would like to say that i have got alot of information about getting hate without taunt- like using a fireball, blazing aura and ice power sets (sorry forget which ones).
I still stand by my thought that taunt is useful but if you dont take it, i will no longer think "huh noob"- i will infact think about how niaeve i was and accept that as long as they con hold agro then they are a great tank.
So now i would like to know everyones final decision- would you take taunt, with which type of tank? Why and why not?
Thanks to anyone who helps me out with this- i will probably nick a few ideas and go and make an anti taunt tank of my own! -
The bases need an upgrade. The base idea is great for supergroups- teleporters are great and its something for very bored leaders to play with.
Having said that i dont think they have been changed (aka. more things to put in ect) since they came about- but i did take a lengthy break from the game and so am happy to admit i may be wrong on that front.
Eitehr way they are still a bit dull- in general they just need more features in them. When it was first mentioned that bases were to come about i had grand visions of something that looked like a CoT arcane base with tunnels, structures and so on- but alas there were set room sizes and nice exciting squares (ok so you can put the walls up but theres only so much you can do with that).
Anyway- long story short- base structures and designing should be made more exciting and flexible. -

I managed to tank perfectly well with Viking Furnace without taunt, so I'm a little disturbed by this "build snobbery" some people are displaying here. "I won't team with a tank that doesn't have taunt". I prefer not to team with someone that decides on a players worth just by what powers they have.
That said, I did spec into into it a while back, and it does make things a lot easier for me.

I think what most people have said is actually justified- after all it is all down to prefference. Posting this i wasnt expecting such a reaction (and yes i am new hehe).
Personally i would ask a person to team on their merits- not their powers. If a person can do their job- aka- tank, then i am happy to team with them. If however a mission is going very slowly, death tolls are high (hypothetically due to a "no taunt" tank and not AoE mad squishies) and i could be doing better soloing, then i know that the tanker i am teming with is not good at his job. Saying that i have teamed with tankers who have taunt who are also truly awful.
As a matter of prefference i would always take taunt for teaming as it is a useful power- but at the same time i will not flat out yell at someone for not having it. -

To be honest whoever owns the character should be able to pick what they want without anyone commenting or criticising, maybe giving advice, but if someone has certain powers do not force them to get rid of them because at the end of they day its their character and its their decision.

Well when i posted this i intended to see whether or not people preffered taunt and to evaluate peoples uses of it. I dont think everyone should have taunt- it is a personal opinion and i wouldnt force a person to get a power. If someone asked my opinion about the usuefullness of the power i would give it- but i wouldnt rant and rave unless its causing the team to wipe more than once- then there is obviously a problem with someone (might even be me who knows). Either way as long as a person is happy and friendly then so am i. -
I have to say i didnt expect this mix of views. Reading it i agree with many people. I think taunt is a choice, but as a personal prefference i would ask for a tanker with taunt in a standard team. This comes from the fact that i have played both tankers and empaths. From a tanking point of view, being able to save the team its very useful, and from an empathy point it reduces casualties.
But for PvP builds perhaps taunt could be seen as pointless? The main person which spurred me to post this was planning on PvP so didnt take taunt. On the flip side however he was planning to team himself to 50, but often wasnt welcome because of his anti-taunt ways. So again, i can see that many people dont want it and thats fair enough, but as a prefference i would take it for team play as it does make a difference. -
I have a very old Invunrability/Fire tanker. Only got SOs on her and she still completly rocks- and you seriously dont see many WP tanks around O.o?
-
Lately i have been meeting more and more tankers who do not have taunt, do not want taunt and will not get taunt. All insist that it is an "unnecissary power" and that it is a waste. Some of these people have also been playing a fair few months. But i completly disagree with these people and think a tanker really does need taunt. So my question is- are these anti taunt tankers right or wrong?
-
I have to admit as a set im not a fan of WP. I may give it a go however as so many are suggesting it. On the other hand im not gonna go for an invun for the reason that i have an invun tank and i want to try something completly different
. I never thought about using spines really before but now that its been suggested im keen to give it a shot!
Open to more suggestions though so keep it up guys! And thanks to all those who have posted before. -
Ok so I am, like so many others, trying to get characters to 50, but i have yet to ever get a scrapper past level 20 or so. So i want to make a scrapper thats a bit of a challenge but not an awful build. Being a bit of a noob when it comes to scrappers i could use a bit of help.
I was thinking one of the following builds but im flexible:
Dark/dark
Dark/katana
Dark/broadsword
Note- I have chosen dark for story purposes but im happy to change to another set (not invunrability). I would also consider one or two other attack sets.
Cheers for the imput guys
