I'll go with APPS. I don't have fury issues. Conserve Power and Physical Perfection would be nice to have on my brutes. My SM/WP would probably get new life if given that choice.
  2. Guess it was a good time for me to jump ship back to ATI. Enjoying my 5870 so far.
  3. If you uncheck advanced options under graphics, does the 3D scaler disappear? Not in front of my rig to check. Have you already attempted to get defaults for the graphics/audio tab? What happens if you start your test server install in the CHV Safe Mode by checking that at the first splash screen?

    So there are exceptions
Even then, while that SD/SS tank will probably push out more aoe damage thanks to foot stomp, rage and AAO, it will not be getting anywhere near the single target damage output of the DM/SR scrapper. Unless that DM scrapper has fireball in which case his AoE will probably catch up if not overtake the tank's.

And the DM/SD scrapper with fireball will kick the carp out of both of them.

all by adding some hardware to fix some lag? that is no fault of the players.

Please tell me what excalty your arguing for and why you would think what seems like absurdity.
I think the thought is absurd because dumping more hardware on the backend won't solve anything.
  7. At this particular time, UberGuy, especially considering Ultra mode and the possible performance ramifications that might come with it...

I would consider it damn near reckless of the dev team NOT to move some priorities around and get overall performance issues dealt with ASAP.

Otherwise, when open beta for Ultra mode hits and performance is even worse off for everyone enabling it, (especially for those of us that just dropped $1250 on parts,) it might be very bad for this game.

At the least, it will be a marketing nightmare. "Introducing Ultra Mode! Be sure not to enable it even if you have Deep Thought as your PC unless you enjoy 10FPS in Grandville."

Now that's a rather doomy statement. I'm hoping for a different outcome. However, in the Army I was taught to hope for the best and expect the worst.

I'm sticking with that for now.

Gut answer? No tank will ever compare to a scrapper on damage output when comparing equally IOed out builds.

Tanks lower damage cap and complete lack of critical hits means the scrapper wins.

That doublestacked rage, thing... fully double stacked, that means whatever DPS you calculate needs to be reduced by 1/6th of the total due to Rage's crash. Question is, what's better? 80% buff and no damage output 1/12th of the time or 160% buff and no damage output 1/6th of the time?
  9. About 1 DPS tweaked to the walls if comparing scrapper MA to what would be scrapper SS.

About 40 DPS in SS favor if using SOs.

    Give or take.

Doublestacking rage hurts in the long run from what I saw while MA at massive levels of recharge does very well.

But it isn't just Grandville, unfortunately. Head to Port Oakes and get on the building with the Pocket D entrance. Do a 360 turn. As you turn toward the abandoned lab, watch your FPS plummet. Head to somewhere on the east side of PO, repeat, same issue.

There's another such performance singularity in Mercy.

Performance singularity. I like that. A vortex of FPS suckage.

History note going purely off memory:

When I started playing CoH, I was on a dual-1GHz P3 with a 9800 Pro video card and 512MB of RAM. Heroside looked a lot more plain than it does these days.

When CoV came out, I believe I was gaming on my P4-3GHz-HT with 2GB of RAM and an X800XT. It struggled some, but good tweaking of settings helped a lot.

Then the devs bumped up hero side world textures to match what they were doing redside. It was some at some point after this that I moved to the X1950XTX video card.

At this point, Port Oakes was still ok. THEN the abandoned lab was put in and PO performance dropped like a rock.

If the devs can figure out and fully understand why the abandoned lab kicked PO in the jimmy, perhaps they can finally resolve it and in doing so, resolve all the zone related issues.

Without those problem children hammering our systems, maybe a lot of the yelling about performance will quiet down a bit.

But again, I'm grasping at straws here. I don't recall any dev EVER commenting about zone structure and how it can tank performance.
  12. They've already upgraded the servers.

This thread has proven that some of the blame lay on end user systems. Granted, that's because the client side systems are having to work extra hard due to questionable issues within the engine itself.

I do not think that any resolution to the various performance woes in this game will find a solution at the hardware level.

I'm now on an I7-920 2.66GHz quadcore proc OCed to 3.2GHz with an ATI 5870 vid card, Win7 and 6GB of DDR3 RAM in tri-channel config.

My test spot in Grandville STILL brought me down to 30FPS. (Granted, this was at 1920X1200 resolution and 200% world detail; 4X FSAA and 8X AF.) It can not be more plainly shown that there are many zones/areas that are poorly put together code-wise regardless of how pretty they may be.

We have been asking for these areas to be corrected for years. The fact that they haven't done so yet points to the devs being UNABLE to do so, for whatever reason.

PERHAPS, the engine changes necessary to make Ultra mode work have some underlying tweaks that will clear some of this up.

It's just as likely, however, that ultra mode is nothing more than extra junk piled on to the existing engine and those running it will do nothing but tank further in the existing problem spots.

I REALLY hope that the second item is not the case. It will not be a pleasant experience for anyone if it is.

I just wish someone on the dev team would give us some more specifics on what we might expect before Ultra mode hits test.

I agree, and she does as well.

She also wants me to tweak the RAM timings, but I'm still wary of messing with those due to not knowing enough about what the timings mean.

She did send me an Anandtech link showing where they had punched their 920s to 4.3GHz. I have NO intention of getting anywhere near that, but I think shooting for 3.6 isn't out of my comfort zone.

Anyone with a decent pc and who currently experiences lag on ITF who cares to test my theory should solo (have 1 person offline of course) or duo that third mission of ITF. It's my belief that you won't experience the infamous "lag" in the valley, regardless of how many instances of ITF is running on that server.
I can verify that soloing an ITF is a lag free experience. Granted, that was with a claws/sr scrapper (meaning very minimal FX) with a C2D proc OCed to 2.7GHz, 2GB ram and an G92-8800 GTS.

All I did after loading up Win7 and 10.2 drivers were the same steps I did under XP with one exception. Due to some games not allowing anisotropic filtering to be completely disabled, I've left that on Use Application Settings.

All the rest are set as per the OP.
Bloom, Depth of Field, Desaturation FX all disabled
    Water on Low
    AF in game at 8x

FSAA off in game and forced to 4X - Wide (something) in the CCC and edges are smooth as can be.

I don't know the answer to that. Ever since I reset the desktop to one of the default Aero themes, alt-tabbing has worked flawlessly.

Under XP, one of the performance tweaks I do is to go to System Properties, Advanced, Performance, and set it to Adjust for Best Performance.

I did NOT do this under Win7. I've left it at the defaults. There is one item in there called Enable Aero Peek but there's several other items in there that don't exist in XP.

Perhaps getting the defaults there will assist you?

Also, are you running the 10.2 Catalysts? I am and seem to recall someone earlier mentioning that the 10.2s fixed their alt-tabbing issue.
  17. Jut bumped up the rig from 2.66GHz to 3.2GHz so that my RAM would be running at the correct speed. Temps staying around 48-52C while in CHV.
  18. FX speaks truly. The card crosses the entire width of my motherboard.
  19. Yup on the Aero background and alt-tabbing. Works just fine now.

  20. Roger that. The silly will be televised for your viewing pleasure.

Well that's just bizarre. But ok. First thing I did was reset desktop to classic. I'll throw on an aero theme tomorrow and will hope for the best. Thanks!
  22. Got the new rig with win7 up and running. I can't alt-tab at all either. On the plus side, ATI's FSAA is still cleaner than Nvidia's.
  23. Powerstream, I hope for the same. I'd be lying if I said I think it will happen, but I like to have my hopes slammed to the ground and stomped on.

FX, actually... it was ok. Once I realized that the thing actually had a backplane. It was hiding in the bottom of the box. It helped quite a bit after I found it.

For the I7-920, the hyper 212 just needs to be adjusted to the max size, then it slapped right on. It's actually a lot easier to mount than the Zalman I've got on the C2D.

I was surprised at the size, but that is the way of things these days.

Side note: I emailed Mid. I've GOT to overclock this beast and I really like the motherboard. Out of the box it seems much more stable than the Asus board the C2D is on.
  24. Back in CHV. Loaded all three of the necessary installers for my XFi Xtremegamer card, or whatever it's called.

    Sound seems ok.

In Grandville running around, 1920X1200 res, 200% world detail, 4xFSAA and 8X AF, the spot above the arbiter face the recluse statue and tower, I still get dropped to 30-35FPS. But that spot is murder. Running around the zone I saw 70-90FPS until I turned back on V-Sync which caps me at 60FPS.

There's tweaking to be done, be she seems good to go. Proc's sitting at 41-44C on temps.
  25. It's always a good thing to have another pair of eyes on a topic like rig building, PS.

Parts just arrived. Finishing up with some data backup then the tear down/rebuild will begin.

Unfortunately, it appears that I'll probably have to make a run to Frys for some more parts due to wanting what will become my son's rig to stay up to my required specs for gaming. On the plus side, I probably won't need to upgrade either of us again for at least two years.
