I sent my problems and some GM responded with some suggestions, but it didn't help me, so I'm going to try and see if any of you guys have had this/these problem(s).
I will describe from scratch what the updater does. On a machine where the client is not installed and the Cryptic key under HKey_Current_User in the registry has been deleted.
1. without any other files than the CohUpdater.eu.exe (the US CohUpdater.exe is also in the same dir). It first DLs 3 files:
CohUpdater.eu.new
CohUpdater.eu.tmp
CohUpdater_UI_Win.tmp
Then it renames CohUpdater_UI_Win.tmp to CohUpdater_UI_Win.dll and CohUpdater.eu.new to CohUpdater.eu.exe (deleting the old file) and deletes CohUpdater.eu.tmp.
2. The Cohupdater.eu.exe then quits and starts the new CohUpdater.eu.exe which then does the same thing. It downloads:
CohUpdater.eu.new
CohUpdater.eu.tmp
CohUpdater_UI_Win.tmp
Renames the files again and deletes the .tmps. Quits again, and does the whole thing again, over and over, in an endless cycle, until you click "quit" button or the X in the ight top corner. You need the updater to patch the game, and fix the checksum file that is in the client directory. It also renames one of the files to CohUpdater.eu.prv.
In the log file that is created in the "logs" directory you can read the followning info:
disconnect error 10054:An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.
That would be some sort of socket error, I have tried to use another windows (new install) on the same machine (same updater) but same result, I've changed drivers to the network card and ATI graphical drivers (did that with the new install). Even tried another network card if the integrated one was the problem, but it didn't make any difference. Then I tried he updater on a laptop, and had the same problem, and took it home with me to try it on my ISP, no change. I have 2 computers on my network that successfully runs the COH Client and updater. There is something the updater does that creates this error, but I can't figure out what. The laptop ran CoH a few months ago and it worked fine. I've tried to download the updater from ftp.coh.com also to eliminate the possibility that the file is broken or corrupt somehow.
the first computer has been runing CoH on and off since 2005 without problems until this one. I tried to start the cient with -project eucoh and others but the checksums are wrong so you can't login, I've trie many different -port settings and -ps x.x.x.x to see if it can connect to another server. The ones I have tried didn't work. I really would like to know why some compouters get 10054:An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host., and other don't, on the same ISP/Network.
Has anyone else had this problem with the updater? If so, did you manage to fix it? I'm thinking maybe I should try Win 2K or Vista, or something. Or wait for another version of the CohUpdater.eu.exe to come around.

I will update this thread if I myself find any solution to the peculiar problem. It's almost like the updater or computer it's not working on are cursed.
