    Guide to Guides

    I. [u]AN INTRODUCTION AND GUIDE TO “GUIDE TO GUIDES”[u]

    Updated: August 10, 2007

"PLAYER GUIDES" FORUM &amp; THE "GUIDE TO GUIDES" THREAD

This *forum*, [u]Player Guides[u], is a place for players to share their guides with other players. Unlike the other forums on this bulletin board, the threads in this forum do not automatically 'scroll off' or get 'aged out.' They stay until the time comes when the forum moderator decides they should go. Right now, threads go all the way back to May of 2004.

If you make a player guide, we ask that you place a copy of it in this forum in a separate thread, even if you are hosting another copy off site. This will help to reduce broken or stale links.

This *thread*, [u]Guide to Guides[u], is an effort to organize all the player guides. This thread contains links to the guides that are not specifically written for an Archetype (AT) or powerset. There are guides for each of the ATs in their own forum (a link to the AT guides can be found in this thread below). The AT guides are stored in this forum, but the guides to AT guides are in their AT forums (in other words, the Guide to Scrapper Guides thread can be found in the Scrapper forum, but the the actual Scrapper guides are stored here in the Player Guides forum).

    WRITING GUIDES

If you have written a guide, please let us know by posting a link to it at the bottom of this thread. If you don't know how to do that, don't worry, this thread has links to guides on how to write guides and how to make links in the forums. See how handy this Guide to Guides is?

If you write a guide for a particular AT (Archetype), then post a link to it both in this thread and the appropriate Guide to AT Guide thread (for example, if you write a Scrapper guide, post a link both here in the Guide to Guides thread and in the Guide to Scrapper Guides thread in the Scrapper Forum).

If you have created a guide, then please do not post the guide itself in this thread. Start a brand new thread in this forum ([u]Guide to Guides[u]) for your brand new guide.

When you title your guide, it's helpful to be as clear as possible what the guide is about. Fun names like "Guide to BOOM!" don't really explain what that guide is about. Instead, something like "Guide to BOOM: How to make exploding objects work for you" is clearer. If your guide is dependent on certain game mechanics that might change over time, it is also helpful to indicate what Issue your guide was written for. For example, putting [I7] in the title lets us know about when your guide was written (during Issue 7's release) and for what game mechanics it applies.

    FINDING GUIDES

Please do not make a request for a guide or ask if a particular guide exists in this forum. We don't want to save all those extraneous threads in this archive-only forum. If you have a question, please post it in the [u]Player Questions[u] forum. If a guide exists, someone will probably give you the link to it, else, they can answer your question directly. If you have a suggestion for a guide, please don’t post the suggestion here; place your suggestion in one of the General Discussion Forums: [u]General Discussion – CoH[u], [u]General Discussion – CoV[u], or [u]Suggestions and Ideas.[u]

Tip: Use your web browser’s search function (usually Edit / Find...) to search this thread for the guide you're looking for. So, for example, if you want to find a guide on Hamidon, just search for ‘Hamidon’ in this thread.

If that doesn't help find a guide you're looking for, try the Search function of the forum (there's a guide linked in this thread that tells you how to use the Search function of the forum!). You can limit your search to the [u]Player Guides[u] forum so you find just guides.

As players add links in this thread to the new guides they’ve created and posted to the forum, we’ll try to edit them into the first pages… but that may take weeks or months to get around to it. It should be understood that anyone coming to this thread take a glance or do a search of the entire thread in order to catch the most recently added guides.

    READER BEWARE

It is important to remember that almost all of these guides are written by players for players. They are not official guides from Cryptic (the game developer) or NCSoft (the game publisher and owner of the forums).

Some guides contain straightforward factual information. Much is easily verified or has been confirmed by the Developers. Some information is simply the best guess of the player because we don't know all the secrets of the game mechanics. There's a reason the company is called Cryptic. So, use the information at your own risk.

Some guides are more advice, suggestion, strategy, and opinion. As such, feel free to disagree. People are attempting to be helpful, but you don't have to take their advice. Play any way you like as long as you don't break the EULA (there's a link to that below).

Some guides get better with feedback, but only if it's constructive feedback (see the guides on forum etiquette). If you wish to discuss the content of a guide, please do so in that guide's thread, not in this thread.

Also keep in mind that some of these guides might have become outdated. That's why we include an issue number with most of them. Some guides are timeless (like good etiquette). Some become stale as game mechanics change, for example, a recent buff to the strength of Archvillains might make many of the older guides to defeating Archvillains no longer helpful. Here are the dates for the issue releases so you have an idea of how old a guide might be....

    I1: 6/30/04
    I2: 9/17/04
    I3: 1/5/05
    I4: 5/5/05
    I5: 9/1/05
    I6: 10/28/05
    I7: 6/6/06
    I8: 11/28/06
    I9: 5/1/07
    I10: 7/24/07

    (Issue highlights link ParagonWiki.)

    UPDATING GUIDES

We strongly encourage authors of guides to revisit their guides to keep them fresh and updated. A recent call went out at the beginning of 2007 for everyone to update their guides. If you authored a guide, please go back to make sure the info is updated. It would be nice to change the [I2] tag next to your guide to a [I10] tag! You may find that other players have contributed to your guide with corrections, suggestions, additions.

So, go ahead and create a brand new thread with your updated guide and include all their amendments and give them a credit and thanks for their help. This will especially help guides that generated lengthy discussions or for those where you wanted to edit the first post but were no longer able to. Don’t forget to post a link to your updated guide in this thread. And don’t forget to put a link at the end of the old guide pointing people to your updated guide.

If you see a guide (or a group of guides) that have become outdated and stale and the author hasn't updated them recently, well, you're certainly welcome to update it yourself if you'd like. Just simply cut and paste the old guide into your new guide and update it. Then it would be nice if you linked back to the original guide(s) with a thanks to that author's initial work. There, everyone benefits.

    REVISION HISTORY

[u]March 21, 2005[u]: CuppaJo, the Community Rep started the first Guide to Guides thread. (Please do not post in this old thread.)

[u]September, 27, 2005[u]: After the original thread above got too unwieldy, CuppaJo created an updated Guide to Guides here.

[u]January 10, 2007[u]: Lighthouse, the new Community Relations Manager, puts out the call at the beginning of the month for everyone to update their guide in preparation for a new and updated Guide. Thanks to milk_weasel, everything in the lengthy Guide thread was organized and given to Lighthouse so that the first post of that thread now included all the links added to the thread.

[u]January 30, 2007[u]: Zombie_Man combs through the Player Guides forum for all that threads that never had a link posted to the Guide to Guide threads. After going through over 4,300 threads (two and a half years’ worth of threads), ZM created a much enlarged Guide to Guides that covers everything up to and including Issue 8. Ex Libris takes over caretaking for the guides as the Community Coordinator.

[u]April 4, 2007[u]: Ex Libris creates the Issue 9 Guide to Player Created Guides. It is filled by contributors who start getting rewarded for writing guides with a special forum title by their name. Last update to the main page of this thread was June 28, 2007. (Please do not post to this thread anymore, the new Guide to Guides contains all the I9 Guides now.

[u]August 8, 2007[u]: Zombie_Man creates this thread, the new Guide to Guides which contains everything in the previous Guide to Guides thread, everything in the Guide to Issue 9 Guides thread, and as many guides that were posted in the forums as can be found for which the originator unfortunately did not post a link. Also, Issue 10 Guides are included. All the links were made cityofheroes / cityofvillains neutral, i.e., if you’re on the blue heroes version of the boards, all the links will keep you in the blue, and likewise for the redside of the boards.

    NOTES FROM YOUR EDITOR

Editors of the AT Guides should go back over the history of the previous Guides listed above to include the appropriate links to new guides in their Guide to the ‘X’ Archetype Guides.

In looking for guides whose owners never posted a link, I did use my judgment in not including certain guides which were only little tips, terribly incomplete, rants against ‘bad play styles,’ or hopelessly outdated. If the authors of those guides are put out by that, they are free to update their guides and post a link of them here for inclusion.

Any feedback would be welcome on the structure, or grammar, or typos, or whatever.

Thanks all. I’ve learned so much from doing this and reading all of your wonderful guides! – Zombie_Man

    </pre><hr />

    [/ QUOTE ]

Hang on a second, Invincible is not double mob sizes. Without more testing I can only speak for soloing, but when solo the spawn sizes are the same as heroic.

Also, Tenacious/Unyielding isn't really "double" the number of critters. My personal theory is that it uses the spawn size for a team with +1 members.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Your correction is 100% correct. It can seem like Difficulty Levels 2 and 4 are doubling the spawn size if you're going by what it does for a soloist. Since those Difficulty Levels (2 and 4) treat the size of your team as having an extra person, then for a soloist, it *will* double your spawn size since the spawns are geared for two players and not one.

However, if you're on a team of 7 and you bump the Difficulty Level from 1 to 2, then you're going to cause spawn sizes generated for a team of 8 (i.e., 7+1) and not for a team of 14 (7 x 2). That does *not* double spawn size.

    [ QUOTE ]

Is there a "red name" confirmation or denial on whether or not reputation has an effect on Task Forces? We are attempting to complete the STF, and are seemingly unable to get past the Defeat Dr. Aeon mission that has him, and his many clones. I've suggested to our leader that we lower our reps, but he doesn't really want to because he isn't sure whether or not its going to make a difference, and he feels that Invincible is "fun."

    [/ QUOTE ]

Not needed. Three years of player experience has confirmed that mission difficulty is adjusted by the leader's difficulty setting, even for missions in task forces and trials. (This is discounting the occasionally bugged TF or Trial where that did not happen.)

I think I've been on the STF with the leader who runs on Invincible for 'fun,' as if lots of team wipes and two extra hours is 'fun.' We had a heated argument and I refused to continue to participate until he lowered the difficulty (he never advertised that he was running an invincible TF, and he had the choice of disbanding and restarting with new players who wanted an invincible TF). So, he lowered the difficulty and after that, he continued to whine about how 'easy' it was even though we had two wipes in the final mission. Grade A Jackass.

Here is my guide on difficulty levels.

wanted to give you a heads up that they're fixing bugs with this feature in the new patch on test. Might want to go see the changes to update your info.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Yeah, I saw it.

The good news is that it really is fixed! Although, slightly buggy in that a few gfx still display. Those should be /bugged.

I created a new guide explaining how it works now. See the new guide here.

Please note the fixed version is still on Test and hasn't made it to Live yet.

Thanks to all for the feedback!
  17. THE TOGGLES! THEY DO NOTHING!

If you look under your Graphics Options (Menu / Options / Graphics and Audio Tab) you'll see in the Advanced Graphics Settings these two items:

    Suppress Extra Player FX
    Suppress FX When Close

When you enable these two options you'll find that one apparently does nothing and the other does nothing unless you know what to look for and how to modify it. In this guide, I'll show you how to make the one that does work actually work, namely, the Suppress FX When Close.

SUPPRESSING YOUR PERSONAL GRAPHIC EFFECTS (GFX)

What the Suppress FX When Close option is supposed to do is to shut off all the FX (graphical effects) of your character when your camera is close to you. The advantage of this is that when the camera is looking over your shoulder, you don't have to try to see past all blinding FX emanating from your body. The FX stops displaying when the camera comes in close.

However, right out of the box, when you enable Suppress FX When Close this option seems to do nothing. Why? Because the default distance between you and the camera at which the FX turns off is zero. That's right, no matter how close the camera pans in, the FX stays on until you finally snap into first person view. When the camera snaps into first person view, then will your personal FX no longer be seen by you.

But there's hope to make this more useful in the form of a slash command called /suppressCloseFxDist whose description is "Within this camera distance, personal FX will be suppressed.'

    The format is...

    /suppressCloseFxDist <feet>

So, if you input /suppressCloseFxDist 30, then when your camera gets within 10 yards of your character, all your special effects will stop displaying (the powers will still be working, of course).

This is good news for people who are finding their FX to be too much or headache inducing &lt;coughsoniccough&gt;. Just input a large number, like 300, and you won't ever see your personal FX again.

    ADVANCED CONTROL

Now, you can go into your options menu to enable or disable Suppress FX When Close, or, you can use the slash command, suppressCloseFx, whose description is "Hide all personal FX when the camera is closer than the suppressCloseFxDist."

    The format is...

    /suppressCloseFx <int>

Where the integer is either 0 (disable) or 1 (enable).

Using the slash commands to turn Suppress FX When Close on or off and setting the suppression distance can then be set up in binds or macros allowing you to quickly turn the option on or off, or to switch the suppression distance. Since these options are sticky from character to character, you'll have to set up binds for each character so that you can turn it on or off easily when you switch toons.

If you set the camera suppression distance to a medium number like 90 (30 yards), then it's easy to turn the display of personal gfx on or off simply be panning your camera in or out.

SuperJumpers are particularly annoyed by personal gfx contrails that block the camera on each downward arc. A quick bind will set up SuperJumps to happen with personal gfx switched off.

    DARK HISTORY OF THIS OPTION

This feature was, until a recent patch, not working correctly. Here is the thread to my previous guide which explained how this function used to work: Click here.

A patch on the Test Server, version 15.20070803.0T, on August 8th, 2007 had this note:

    Quote:
    User Interface

    * Fixed "Suppress FX When Close" option to work correctly, and to persist when a character logs/zones.
This new, fixed version is not suppressing *all* FX, just *most* of them. Inspiration and Leadership gfx are still seen as was a self buff from the PB set. Also, things you would expect not to be suppressed are, e.g., wings; or the Nemesis Staff being invisible, but not the energy beam it shoots. Now that this option is going to get actual use from the players, it's time to start /bugging which gfx aren't being suppressed.

Our Demo Edit Guru, Zloth, had plumbed the depths of FX Suppression insanity in how it affected Demo playback in this thread: suppressCloseFx and Demo Editing. We shall see if the fixed version helps with Demo playbacks.

    ADDENDUM:

Now, I said earlier that Suppress Extra Player does nothing. And as far I can tell, it does nothing. I'm a hero and I see another hero with Dispersion Bubble and a host of other powers and, well, I see them. Nothing is being suppressed. And they meet all the requirements set for by poz in this post:
    Quote:
The intention of "Suppress Extra Player FX" was to reduce the number of "unimportant" FX displayed. This was targeting city zones, mainly near trainers.

With the Suppress FX options turned on, here are the heuristics used to determine if a continuing FX will be shown.
    1. If it's not a continuing FX then show it.
    2. If it's on you show it.
    3. If it's on a critter show it.
    4. If it's from a villain and you're a hero (or vice versa) show it.
    5. If it's from you or to you, show it. (So you see all bubbles you cast.)
    6. If the target or source is on you team show it.

In April last year, a fix was made to the code which fixed a loophole where you may not see some teammate FX (such as when they were debuffed by a critter). This may explain the change in behavior that you've seen.

So, I believe that the suppress code is working as we intended. We decided that anything that happened to a teammate or that you triggered was important. This feature was never meant to help on mission maps; it was meant to help spammed group heals at Ms. Liberty and sundry running around town.
Hopefully, this feature gets fixed, too.

UPDATE: Because Suppress Extra Player did almost nothing, it has been removed from the game.

    Updated paragonwiki.

Are the limits still .64 and 1.54? I seem to recall setting the scale up to 1.9 through the Options dialog since I9 hit.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Hey, an undocumented change. We hardly see any of those! &lt;rolls eyes&gt;

The slider in the option menu now goes between 64% and 199%.

The /windowscale command can now take an effective argument of .65 to 1.99. That's not a typo, .65. In the /windowscale command, changing a window from .65 to .64 had no effect on size. This is opposed to the sliding scale in the options menu where going from 65% to 64% had a visible effect.

Anyway, once you get to the extremes, you're basically either trying to make the window as large or as small as it can be. The command /windowscale can take an 'overshoot' argument. If you use .5 or .1, it will scale the window down to the minimum of 65%. And if you use 2 or 10 in the argument, it will scale up the window to the maximum size of 199%.

New and improved ParagonWiki article on /Windowscale. The above link is stale. And I updated the article to include all the info in this thread. Thanks to Konoko for creating the original article on the wiki.

Is there any way to re-size the map window?

I do mean re-size, not rescale.

I keep my map undocked and off the the side at .75 for easy navigation in those pesky mine/tunnel maps, and I would like to be able to resize the window at the same scale to get the bigger picture. Kind of a jury-rigged mini/max map at a keystroke. scale sort of works but every time it scales back down it moves the position of my map back to the center of the screen.

Barring a resize option, any way to define the window position for when it scales back down?

    [/ QUOTE ]

There is no known window positioning commands, as much as they've been asked for, since that would allow us to create binds that would auto-setup all our windows they way we want, and change it on the fly even!

I keep my undocked map in the upper right corner at .75 scale, too. I sometimes use the slider to magnify. And if I have to, I just grab the lower left corner of the map and click-and-drag it to expand it. Then click-and-drag that corner to shrink it. This keeps the map in the same position.
  22. I do a similar thing, but since I like to tap a key to find my targets rather than click on a macro button, I've created a macro that rewrites my hunting key!

    /macro A bind a "targetcustomnext xx$$targetcustomnext xx$$targetcustomnext xx"

This creates a macro button labled "A". When I click on the macro "A" it binds to the 'a' key the targeting bind.

If I'm in a RWZ mission and I'm trying to find Fusionette or Faultline, I edit the macro replacing one of the "xx" with Fus and the other with "faul" and then I click the macro. Then I can run about the mission tapping the 'a' key to find them. (I moved my movement keys, so that 'a' and 'q' would be available for binds to the left of movement hand -- use whatever key you'd like.)

Then if I'm in a Malta Mission, I edit the macro for "sap", click it, and 'a' is rebound to find Sappers.

Remember, when you link commands with the '$$' delimiter, the commands to the right are executed first. So, on my Scrapper, I put the name of the boss class in the rightmost position, then lieutenants next. This way I can find the higher threat targets first in a mission.

If you ever team with a Kheldian, you'll want to create this bind or macro:

    /bind K "targetcustomnext quant$$targetcustomnext void$$targetcustomnext cyst$$targetcustomnext nova$$targetcustomnext dwarf"

    /bind Ctrl+K "l Watch out space friend, it's a $target!$$em whistle"

Once the 'K' key finds and targets a Kheldian enemy, "Control-K" will announce it in /local with a whistle emote.
  23. Good job.

I still want to know how they are going to identify those people who have had to be inactive due to hardship beyond their control.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I imagine NCSoft isn't going to keep track of that at all, because the only thing these people in unfortunate situations is going to lose is *possibly* the name of their level 1-5 characters.

Which is precisely why everyone in this thread who is saying...

ZOMG!!!!!! LEVEL SIX IS TOO LOW!!! IT'S NOT GOING TO FREE ENOUGH NAMES!!!!!!!!!!! I MUST HAVE MORE NAMES AVAILABLE TO ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SCREW THE DEADBEATS WHO MAY COME BACK AND WANT TO KEEP THE NAME OF THEIR LEVEL 20 CHARACTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !

are just adapting an overly harsh and punitive stance which is hard for me to credit to anything but self-centeredness.

NCSoft knows how many people reactivate accounts when there's a new issue or double xp weekend and NCSoft knows how many people they don't want to tick off by freeing up the name of a level 20 toon that the player is willing to pay to play again.

As I mentioned above (as if half the hysterical rants here are posted by people who have the courtesy to read a thread before posting in it), I can easily see 300,000 names being 'freed' by this move.

I would love to know the actually datamined count of have many names fall into this category... but I know I that I don't have a right to demand it. And without numbers, anyone who says definitively "it's not enough" is just looking silly making judgments based on insufficient data.
