The trial of Praetorian Operative Raurí Connell, aka Belus, drew to a close today after the jury returned a verdict of the lesser charge of Involuntary Manslaughter.
The defendant was sentenced to be remanded into psychiatric care pending the acceptance of a Super or Military Group who are willing to supervise continued treatment. Judge Lawrence Carmichael remarked that “despite the crimes you committed, your actions while being held at the Zigursky Penitentiary have shown that your first instinct is to protect. It is with this in mind that you are being given this chance. I pray that you do not waste it.”
The defence council, Sophie O'Neil, commented that while her client “deeply regrets the deaths he caused, we are very relieved that the circumstances surrounding them have been acknowledged and taken into account. It is our hope that Mr Connell can someday soon return to society as a protector, rather than someone to be feared.”

It should come to no surprise to our readers that the Magic Murders Trial has closed with a “Not Guilty” verdict. To add insult to the injury already done to the grieving families, the defendant, one Raurí Connell, aka Belus, formerly resident of Preatoria has been found guilty of the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter, thus completely exonerating him of the responsibility for the deaths he admits causing.
This disgraceful display was compounded by Judge Carmichael's suggestion that Mr Connell be released to the custody of a Super Group, therefore leading the the likelihood of this dangerous individual once again haunting the streets of our fair city.
We at the Tattler are shocked at the flagrant disregard for the safety and well being of Paragon's citizens and would hope that any judge who holds their political office above the security of the people seriously considers tendering their resignation before they can do more damage. -

I know what you're up to! You're only trying to steal back the Mean Hat, Birdy!
Ahem.
To the OP's question; I think it comes down to how much you like playing the character, and how much Drama you want to cause. Retirement, loss of powers, moving away, and injury are all perfectly valid reasons for leaving a toon on the sidelines. Equally death isn't so permanent in a comic book world, so you could kill them off, but keep the toon for playing against the possibility that you may want to RP them again in the future.
Personally, I killed off a character recently as part of a plot, but as I rolled her up with the intention of doing so (no matter how fun she was to play), I'm not sure that really counts. -

The trial of Praetorian Operative Raurí Connell continued today, with testimonies given by respected criminal psychologist Dr Evan Falstaff, and member of the Midnight Squad, Professor Raul Santos, an expert on magical and cursed weaponry.
After several hours of cross examination, the jury heard the closing arguments and were adjourned to begin their deliberations.
Their decision is expected to be given tomorrow afternoon. Mr Connell remains remanded in custody pending the verdict.

The travesty of justice that is the Magic Murders Trial continued today with so-called experts giving reasons why the court should turn a blind eye to the deaths of various magic users, including young student, Elizabeth Reed.
Given that the defendant has made no attempt to deny responsibility for the brutal murders (and other crimes), we at the Tattler have to wonder at the length of this charade and why so much effort is going into painting him as a victim. It would certainly seem that in spite of the valiant efforts of prosecutor, Mr Aaron Roth, the inevitable conclusion of this trial will leave a dangerous individual free on the streets, when they should clearly be locked up for the safety of the honest citizens of this fair city. -

The Magic Murders Trial began in earnest today, with opening statements being given by both the prosecution and defence lawyers. We at the Tattler believe it to be nothing more than a sham designed to give the illusion of justice without any real intention of seeing it carried out.
The fact that the defence team does not dispute the fact that the numerous murders and other crimes were committed by the accused, one Raurí Connell (aka Belus), formerly a resident of Praetoria. They still have chosen to bog the proceedings down with specious arguments over whether or not he was ultimately responsible for these horrific acts.
To quote Mr Aaron Roth, the lead prosecutor's opening speech; "This trial is not to determine guilt, so much as responsibility. The facts of this case are that Mr Connell, over a number of days, gained illegal entry to our beloved city, and proceeded to commit acts of murder, attempted murder, assault and theft. My colleagues on the defence team do not dispute these facts. You will, however, be told that the defendent wasn't in control of his actions. You will be told that his admittedly tragic past has predisposed him to anger towards those who use magic. And you will be told that because of these things, he is a victim. My esteemed colleagues will be very persuasive as they give their reasons, but at the end of the day, this man killed people. And he wanted to kill them. Not because of his past, or because he was controlled, but because of what they were. People who use magic. That, ladies and gentlemen, is a hate crime on a par with racial genocide, and have no doubt - if he could kill everyone in the world who uses magic, he would."
In spite of the seriousness of the alleged crimes, the so-called 'heroes' of this city have, as can be expected, turned out to defend the actions of one of their own. Several high profile individuals, including Ellie Stoneburg, aka Tiger White and Richard Huntington, aka Shadowe, took the stand to give evidence. All of whom argued in support of the defence's claims despite the best efforts of the prosecution.
It would appear that Mr Aaron Roth will have is work cut out to put a stop to the political prevarication that appears to be rife in this token trial. One can only hope that those on the jury can see through the prevarications and return a verdict of 'Guilty'.

The trial of Praetorian Operative Raurí Connell, aka Belus, which some parts of the media have dubbed the Magic Murder Trial, continued today. With a number of registered heroes and experts being called to give evidence.
While the defence do not deny the charges which have been brought against the defendant, it would seem that the case hinges on the culpability of Mr Connell. Something which has been called into question upon analysis of the weapons he used.
In spite of the efforts of the prosecution, Mr Aaron Roth (which at times bordered on being in contempt of court), the witnesses who took the stand were either unable to shed any light on the matter, or strongly supported the opinion that the weapons were cursed and strongly influenced the defendant's behaviour to the point of being essentially mind controlled.
Mr Connell remains remanded in custody pending the resolution of the trial, which is expected to be on Friday. -

It is with great displeasure that we at the Tattler must once again report that the government is allowing political pussyfooting to stand in the way of justice. One Raurí Connell, a Praetorian Agent also known as Belus, is standing trial for various violent crimes, including the murder of an innocent student at Paragon City University. His plea is, of course, not guilty.
We are left to ask; is justice to be sacrificed for the political machinations of those Praetorians who only wish to take advantage of our society before another attempted invasion? Is appeasement to be the policy of those in power?
It would seem that we can only watch and wait as the inevitable aquittal is passed and crime once again goes unpunished. -

A Step Too Far?
We are all glad to hear when a citizen is saved from one of the many gangs who plague this city, but given recent events, one is compelled to ask; “How far is too far?” One citizen, Mabel Franks, 32 of Kings Row, may be in a better position to answer that than most, as she was saved from the clutches of a group of Circle of Thorns mystics last night. Unfortunately, her tale is not one of dashing heroism by one of our city's finest, but rather, one of fear and violence. In her own words, “There was this figure that I couldn't really see, right? And then suddenly the screaming started and there was blood everywhere! I've never been so scared in my life, I thought I would be next!”
While she acknowledges that without the intervention of the unknown individual she would likely be dead, the horror of seeing nine brutally slain in front of her will in itself leave lasting emotional scars.
How can we trust heroes who take the law so far that they almost become the very thing they are pledged to protect us from?
Paragon Times, Evening Edition, July 11th 2011, page 12
Nine Circle of Thorns Members killed during the interruption of a ritual. Police are investigating, but sources state that there is little information to go on. -
Ineloo did not like the look of the way things were developing, and while she might not quite have a totally legitimate hero licence yet, she was sure that the documentation the Captain had kindly provided her would more than suffice for now.
Quote:Having already stepped behind Kri to somewhat shield her actions from the invaders, she quickly fitted an arrow to her string and spoke in a voice that was only just loud enough for the lizardman to hear, "You might want to close your eyes. If I'm right, things are going to get a little bright if she heads our way..."Katze growled, "now either step aside or..." unhooking a what seemed like a spiked ball from her belt, a handle shooting out from the inside, turning into a large spiked mace, "...I will make you step aside..."
With Kri now aware of her intentions (assuming he had been paying attention), Ineloo waited for the big cat-woman to take a step towards them. The second she did, she would find an arrow hitting the ground at her feet and releasing a blinding flash that would give the halfling and her allies the chance to find better cover. From that point they should then be able to either escape, or attack and hopefully begin to turn the tide of this invasion. -
Absolutely! Professional and amateur lurkers are more than welcome!
-
Ineloo's grin of appreciation at Kri's story faded rapidly when the huge woman with the tail came into view. In spite of the fact that she was generally used to being dwarved by most people (even though she was considered rather tall for her species), this woman was something else - easily twice the hight of the halfling - and clearly not someone to cross.
The Halfling looked up at Kri uncertainly, her hand twitching towards the bow that was secured on her back, "I don't think anyone's mentioned people like these wandering around this city..."
She glanced around again warily. She was rapidly becoming more and more uncomfortable about the situation, her rogue's instincts screaming at her to hide in the shadows. "Um...I think it might be a good idea to get to cover. Soon..." -
Quote:Same here. I'm saving mine in case I get to have my name back - I'm rather attached to it.I would change it, but I'm not willing to give up the rename token yet!!!
If someone else thought of it first that's fair enough, but it just feels unfair that someone on the NA side of things could have picked it last week and gets to keep it. -
Unity Tower
I'll be careful, love. I promise. Raurí Connell, aka Neit, whispered, giving his wife a kiss as they stood in the doorway to the rooms they had been assigned in Unity Tower.
You'd better be, or you'll be sorry! she replied, half smiling. If you manage to get yourself killed in this invasion, I'm going to find a mage to drag you back so I can kill you myself!
The tall Irishman laughed and hugged her, With a promise like that to look forward to I'm sure these Praetorians'll give me plenty of leeway!
As she watched him walk away, Helena folded her arms across her chest and took a deep breath. She would not cry. Raurí would come home safe and there would be nothing more than a scolding for letting his clothes get torn. Her husband would be fine, her friends and sister in law would not be hurt. There was nothing to worry about.
At least, that's what she would keep telling herself until this was all over.
Taking another deep breath, she turned and looked for her daughters only to find them investigating a vent cover which they'd already managed to half pry off the wall. Isabella and Esmerelda Connell! What do you two think you are doing?

Steel Canyon Fire Station
Right, everyone knows what they're doing? Good. Dismissed.
Shanna Connell rose with the rest of the firefighters to leave after the briefing when the station chief beckoned her over. Connell, I know you'll be doing what you can, but if it looks like things are under control and you're needed elsewhere, you're to go. Understand me?
Boss, I can't...
Don't argue. You're a registered hero. You're supposed to help protect the city. The crews are more than capable of doing their jobs without the extra support it's better having it, but if you have to go, you have to go. He paused and studied the diminutive red-head carefully, I don't particularly like the idea of this Tyrant guy being in charge, so you'd better be ready to help kick his lot out.
She nodded reluctantly, My priority is to help protect my crew though...
Of course, but you're not the only one who's been called in. There's a other registered heroes who're going to be helping out.
If ye're havin' t' call in extras then why...?
You know why. Now get out there and don't get yourself hurt. Your mother will have my hide if you do! He grinned to himself as he left the room, effectively ending the conversation on his terms. Now that the crews were all briefed and in place, all that was left was finding out exactly what these invaders had planned.

PCU, Steel Canyon Campus
Cassandra Baudin sipped her tea thoughtfully as she studied the campus map one last time. With the assistance of a few of her more promising senior students, she would be providing some protection for those who came to the university.
It was a simple spell really, one that would make the area seem uninteresting to anyone with malicious intent and encourage them to move on. Unfortunately, it was a time consuming, tiring work to do and would probably require a good few days rest afterwards. Still, with the preparations she had been making, the mage was confident that she would be able to keep at least this part of the zone relatively safe.
Edison, she called to the black and white cat who was currently menacing the squeaky rubber mouse he thought she didn't know about, Would you please go and keep an eye on Miss Connell's nieces?
The cat glanced over and blinked at her.
That's no way to talk about such lovely girls, even if they are rather boisterous. the professor hid a smile as her familiar grumbled about the request. Well use your magic if you must. I know you have a few tricks you like to use for keeping them in check. Besides, I'm more concerned about what they'll find to play with in that tower than any Praetorians potentially hurting them.
Edison sighed, then promptly disappeared to carry out his instructions while Cassandra smirked a little at the space he had just occupied. She flicked a hand in the mouse's direction, sending it to join him, You forgot your toy, kitty. -
I've gone from being @Fea to @Belus - I know there were going to be clashes and they had to make a way to decide who has precedence, but I wish it had been based on Vet time or something instead. If someone had the global of @Fea longer than me then that's that.
Still, email has been sent, and I'm hoping I might get to have my name back if it's a dead account. Foolish perhaps, but that's what I'm going with. -
I got to keep my second account's global. I would have preferred it to be the other way around!
-
Currently running as @Belus
/grumble -
Seems to have worked quite well for the Rikti, and they don't even have a full uncontested zone to use as a staging ground!
-
Oh dear...while that's one way of doing it, I can't help but think it's going to end in tears.
-
I find it very much depends on the character.
For example, one of my toons is an experienced mage who has been practising magic since the early 1700s. I don't play her as the level 20-odd that she is in game because although I do not consider her to be hugely powerful, having nearly 300 years of magecraft under her belt puts her at level 50 in terms of experience.
Another of them (who happens to be the mage's familiar when he feels like it) is a cat - he has some IC powers that he uses more to annoy people than anything else - but I wouldn't even consider him to be level 1. After all, he's a cat!
And for my last example; I didn't RP my main's Praetorian double at all until she hit level 20 purely so that she could get into the rest of the game.
Equally, I don't tend to pay too much attention to the alignment of my characters because most of the time I'm using that either for badges or for the ability to go either red or blue side, not as any reflection of what kind of hero/villain they are. -
I've probably just not been paying enough attention, but have any of the rednames come back with the results of their discussions? Last I heard the thread had been shifted and they would get back to us...
-
Quote:"Oh, I wasn't insisting! Just checking to make sure. Sometimes some of House Deneith's warriors need to be asked twice you see." Ineloo smiled slightly, "They say no, and then they spend the rest of the time whining that their leg hurts, so I've learned to check is all. I'm sorry if I caused any offense!"The Tsaiv gave the halfling a pained glance, the alien woman setting to answer with reluctance when Kri interjected, calling her attention with a whisper as he took a knee beside the little rogue.
"Miss Ineloo," the shaman told her quietly, glancing up for a moment at the armored Esertosian, "this female, she's a warrior. Through overcoming her pain, she builds strength within. She wants to fight it. Your insistence is disrespecting that, you know."
The 'warrior' meanwhile didn't say anything, but judging by the affirming, if gentle look in her eyes, the lavender lizardman had hit the nail on the head.
The Halfling looked around curiously again, trying to absorb as much information as possible about the technology the Gonarov's crew were using. Her hands twitched by her sides as she longed for the opportunity to test some of it out. -
Quote:The Halfling giggled and flashed her a cheeky smile, "Giant Propelled Rock. There was this one time when a group of friends and I went into a cave we'd heard had treasure in, but in the main chamber there was a giant instead who started throwing rocks at us. I got onto a ledge to shoot him from, and Aeos, our mage hid behind my Warforged friend and took pot shots with a wand. It was funny! Shame there was no treasure though..."I'll be fine." she told Ineloo, "But thank you for the offer. Pardon my ignorance, but for what does GPR stand?"
"Are you sure you don't want healing?" Ineloo said after a brief pause for breath, "House Jorasco offers healing and hospitality to all who wish it. I could have you fixed up in the blink of an eye!" -
Eden
Ineloo had been standing quietly next to Kri while the transfer of Quicksilver's prisoner was taking place. Now that it was over and the Protector was in the Captain's custody, the Halfling waved and grinned a greeting to the Autobot.
She then turned her attention to the other passenger. They were clearly one of the Gonarov's crew, but from the looks of their rather battered armour they had been in a bit of a scuffle. Ineloo held her hands out to the armoured figure and tilted her head questioningly, "Are you hurt? It looks like you've been at the wrong end of a GPR! I can heal you a bit if you want?" -
Well, lets just hope that they come up with a more sensible suggestion after the internal discussions. Personally I think it would be a shame if they stuck with the 3 hour war idea - It's kind of hard to believe that Cole would go to all the effort of starting an official war for that length of time. To me, that's more like an unofficial skirmish or short incursion before the main attack.
-
Talk about a stress test! Surely it would be more sensible to hand out the badge for each server as the event happens?

Quote:Ineloo turned to the lizardman and smiled in anticipation. Whatever this 'earthglide' thing was sounded like it would be fun, but if he couldn't do it yet the light flyer had been fun on the way here. If they used that, maybe she could persuade him to give her a lesson in how to pilot it... After all, she was a quick learner and naturally curious about new things which was all part of the reason why she'd fallen into her previous profession without too much nudging."Uhm..." the lavender lizardman replied uncertainly, "I'm not sure. I haven't really tried yet, you know."
"Then do so." the Captain's expression returned to its former neutrality, "If you can, quickly take her to the office in Galaxy City. If not, take a light flyer on your way out..."
"I'm ready to go whenever you are, Kri." She piped up enthusiastically.
