  1. Excellent information, je saist, and thanks! Can't wait to hear what comes out of closed beta....
  2. Hmm, interesting stuff je saist. Does it boil down to which vid card manufactuerer is "truer" in its implementation of OpenGL then? I understand that a number of people had/have problems with ATI cards and certain visual features, but these cards are "OpenGL generational equivalents" to nVidia cards that do not.

(To be fair, certain nVidia cards had weird, driver-related problems - I experienced a couple myself, but they were driver not hardware and quickly resolved...)

I anticipate my current card, a 8800 GTX may be able to render Ultra Mode, but as a slide show...
  3. Thanks je saist.

Yes, I knew that it used Open GL, but I was under the impression that some of the fancy stuff (e.g. ambient occluded shading) would only work with DX10/11 on the nVidia cards, so it was really more of a question about OpenGL call compatibility. Or maybe it was Microsoft gremlins whispering in my ear at night...
  4. Next question, what parts, if any, of Ultra-Mode will NOT be available in XP? Does this differ by card manufacturer?

    Thanks!
  5. Quick question I didn't see an answer to...

The GTX295 is a two GPU solution, right? Two GPUs on a single (big ol' brick of a) card.

As I understand how these dual GPUs work, they are internally connected via an SLI bridge. Does the statement from Posi above indicate that, until they fix the issue, a one-card, two GPU solution won't be any different than a single GPU?

Oh thank you Missy! I was wondering how to go about finding out why the guy had a question mark in his name!

That said, there is theoretically loads of organics to consume. Question is what they can use for fuel source. Luckily we all know they go for the brain
Oh sure, NOW bring science into it! :P As a scientist, I have to hypothesize...

If they need fresh brains, then they would die out with living humans. (This happens with real diseases that are new to an organism - like what almost happened with the Bubonic Plague, and what maybe could happen with something like an easily transmissible bird flu or ebola.)

The zombie-fier (whatever it is) could evolve into a form that is less virulent (as would happen with a disease after a few generations, like any number of flu viruses). Maybe they just nibble on people's toes or something...

The zombie-fier could consume anything organic, in which case they would be grazing in the fields, not in our heads and attacking us. (Zombies - the new farm pests!) I suppose they could be omnivores with a predilection for human flesh because it is tasty to them. (All the essential nutrients!)

Maybe they are photosynthetic! That is why zombies are green! We only see them at night because they are basking in the sun during the day!

Or they could be "magic" and in violation of every law of thermodynamics, they could go on and on and on....

If you want to learn about real (and really freaky) zombies, check out Parasite Rex by Carl Zimmer:

where you will learn about zombie ants and mind-controlled crabs and suchlike....far more frisson-generating than any zombie story!

So, even in the worst apocalyptic scenario. You only need to be out of touch for a couple of weeks to survive this disaster. There are enough remote locations and survival nutters out there to make the survival of the human species possible.

I can see though why superheroes like to destroy as many zombies as possible. I will be there next attack
The paper considers the scenario if zombies can reanimate corpses too. This is zombie genre canon, no?

And why rapidly die off? Only in the "28 Days" type scenario. Depending on what is animating them, they might be immortal!

The short story "I am Legend" by Richard Matheson (don't know about the movies) has a nice twist on that topic.

And, if survivalists are the only human beings that survive, can humanity be said to have survived?
  11. Nice one, NT! It would be fun if in one of the zombie scrums, certain PCs get "infected" (a la Confuse or such) and start attacking other PCs...you know that level 50 blaster on your team - uh oh, ZOMBIEFIED!

Damz, built into the model they put together is a factor for the "transmission" rate. Anything above zero is eventually going to doom humanity, since they keep coming back, and we can only die. It gets worse if you count birthrate, since new humans are just more potential converts to the zombies.

So, while they may just shuffle around, if there are 4 billion zombies, they pretty much have you surrounded and can shuffle up to you, and then you shuffle off your mortal coil!
  12. I found this interesting:

    http://www.mathstat.uottawa.ca/~rsmith/Zombies.pdf

It is a research paper investigating the effect different zombie parameters and non-zombie reactions would have on a zombie apocalypse. If you ever wondered just why heroes and villains respond so aggressively to the zombie invasions in Paragon City, the math in the paper shows why: if we don't, we lose.

It concludes, "In summary, a zombie outbreak is likely to lead to the collapse of civilisation, unless it is dealt with quickly. While aggressive quarantine may contain the epidemic, or a cure may lead to coexistence of humans and zombies, the most effective way to contain the rise of the undead is to hit hard and hit often. As seen in the movies, it is imperative that zombies are dealt with quickly, or else we are all in a great deal of trouble."

(The findings are not just silly - the mathematical model they create could be an analog to real-life infectious events.)

So, any chance of "infectious" zombies in CoX?

(I would love to have Arcanaville and/or devs educate on how the formulae at the end of the paper could be incorporated into CoX!!!)
  13. I have noticed as of I12 that the fully empowered Grave Knights cycle weapons among the rusty one (base) to the two-blade one, to the two-blade with the electrical VFX. Previously, once fully empowered they just used the latter. I don't know if the damage amount changes with the different appearances.
