Mine's got both - the numbered categories in the first half, and then alphabetical lookups for the second (not fully alphabetical, I hate that bleah!!).

Quote:Indeed. So, when you need "fgdbtstlab23" or "goldfarmerme" ... I'm sure they'll be openThere have been comments in the past that have implied that they may in fact have run the script on trial accounts that were never paid on, and done without the usual warnings. I don't have an issue with that. Someone who never invested in the game shouldn't get the same consideration as anyone who paid, even for just a couple of months.

Quote:I refered to "most of the rest of us in this game with qualifiers". Not "everyone but you".First of all, you can't speak for "most of the rest of us in this game." And you know you can't. That's silly.
I have a different opinion, and I'm merely expressing it. You do realize that that is actually encouraged here, right? Especially in this sub-forum?
And how in the world would it impact you if this were to be implemented? Why are you so dead set against it, aside from your Quixotic quest to make the world more creative like you?
Some things are not meant to "help" but to restrict. What you want won't work to help anyone get anything. It will in fact encourage people to just "not" be original. I find that idea abhorrent.
If a name is taken, it's taken. Move on. I dont' care if it's on an account that was opened 5 years ago and played for 20 minutes. If that character is above level 6, formerly level 30 since the first purge was enacted, that character should be there wholly intact for its owner should they decide to come back.
I DO think that a name generator IS a good idea. Fortunately, there are already dozens of them online. Hell I've MADE some. I know they're there.
That part of the idea isn't necessary to put into the game, because it's simply put already existing outside the game. It's something that can easily be located while you're there looking at the blank area for the character's name.
Quote:would like the script to be run more often, in case that might help (though, for all we know, it could be run daily)
And guess what: it did NOTHING. It freed names all right, but *no one needed them*. Either the accounts were still active, or the characters were named originally enough that no one else would choose or create that name. That's why when it was run again later it was made to be level 6 instead of much higher, and still the same results - no one needed those names. The delusion that some folks seem to be under, that this name purge could some how be of use to you looking for those insanely common names is amazing to me. They're common. They're already out there being used by people who ACTUALLY PLAY the game.
Quote:would prefer a non-unique naming system.
Quote:Personally, considering how often this complaint comes up, I think that non-unique naming would be a financial boon for the game. Not only would people be more inclined to stay in the game if they could have their desired name, but renaming tokens would sell like hotcakes.
I know of no one who's ever left the game over a name issue. None. Do you know one personally? Are you one? Don't think so.
Non unique naming is a *hassle* of unbelievable proportion, and would piss off way more people than it would ever help.
Rename tokens don't sell like hotcakes for the same reason that the name purges don't run more often. The data mining indicated that it wasn't being made useful AT ALL. It's only ever been run TWICE that I know of. They do tell us when they're going to run it, usually along with a reup weekend to allow people who want to keep those names, even if they're not on an active account at the moment, to do so if they really want to.
And it has had *no effect*. If it was really an issue, a tangible, real issue, those names would be freed up left and right, and you'd be happy. But it's not. The names you want are on characters who meet the level and activity restrictions, so you are out of luck.
www.reference.com is free. Go use it. -
It's an ATI card driver issue - but it may be a compatability thing with the game's last update, causing a problem and not the driver itself. I've seen this before, I generally wait for them to patch it. As long as you inform support, they know it's a problem.

Oh god I know. Mine is also a 77 edition, with the red and black cover? Really great book. You'd think I would have it memorized, with the amount of stuff I name. It's not just for here: it's online on Deviantart, for wolves, horses, characters in my rpg world, elves, soul-names for elves, pets, mounts...

Quote:Yes, I do.That still doesn't address what people want.
And I think you know this.
What they want is to have the same "great name" that many others have wanted.
Only one of us gets that "great name".
To me that merely means that the name wasn't so great if I thought of it *second*. Or *eighth*. Or *twentieth*. It means to me: something else will make MY character stand out where that one might not.
People want *common*. But this game is about anything BUT commonality. It's about originality, difference, color, amazing combinations. Names should logically follow that. -
Jumping on this forum and asking for help.
Jumping onto google and searching "name generator".
Clicking the link to "reference.com" and hitting 'thesaurus'.
You can do those things while sitting in the character generator. I have a stack - and I mean a stack - of dictionaries, foreign language as well as English, thesaurus, books on gods and goddesses, baby name books, hell even just turning my head to the left and seeing my CD collection can inspire a new good name that no one else has.
It really, really isn't that hard. And I suppose that lazy isn't the right word. Stubborn perhaps. -
I just use uniball or pilot ballpoints. Since I generally don't use sweeping lines and different weights, and most of my art winds up online as adoptables and is more for the pose and coloring than how pretty the lineart looks, I'm okay with that.

Quote:How is "coming up with a real good name that isn't like all the others out there" "settling"?!No thanks. I do not have to conform to your way of thinking. I do not want to be special. I want one particular non-copywrited name. No other name will fit my concept. What's so hard to understand about that? What's so bad about a narrow box, or simply being particular? Maybe a wide box just isn't for me.
Being forced to settle is NOT a good thing. And guess what? We're five years into this game. At this point, all potential new players are late to the party. Yet we want new players, don't we? Let's offer something to them besides a thesaurus and a "good luck."
Look: your idea for a name was not yours to start with. Obviously - if it's already taken then do something different.
We've offered repeatedly to help out, and actually gotten some really good names out of it for folks. If YOU don't want to have a better, new, actually-original name... that's not the game's issue it is in fact yours.
Get that thesaurus. Why? Because it'll help you in the real world too. If you can't get your mind around using a different term for "red" or "fire" or "ice" or "hitting"... the problem is not with the game. It's with your lack of knowledge of the huge variety of words out there available for use.
Example:
I want to name a character "Fire Strike". But it's taken! Oh noes!
What about "Fire Strikeout" "Flamestrike" "Flickerhitter" "Luminescent POW" ... it just keeps going but they all basically mean the same thing: fire strike.
To me, and to most of the rest of us in this game with literally hundreds of original characters on our accounts, "settling" does NOT mean 'having to think up a new different name'. It means "having the same dull commonly used name as 90 other people already thought of". THAT is lame, imho, THAT is settling.
Is your name John Smith? Why can't it be Jalil Shakar? In the game, you have the CHOICE. If YOU choose to want the name "john smith", ... well, join the ranks of all the others - but be warned that it's just gonna be "john smith 12" for you.
How original. -
Too late: someone else came up with it first. Start over. Think OUTSIDE your narrow box, please? If all you want is to be thought of as the same guy as 77 other people with that same moniker... well.. *shrug* Gotta be slightly more original in this game, and that's a good thing.

In a game where there are so many quadrillions of combinations of character image potential... getting a unique name IS as important as getting the right look.
If you - whoever - want to have "Super Fire Dude" go right ahead. You are indistinguishable from the others who have a similarly dull or uninspired name.
My first 50, Retail Retali8r, got so many compliments on the name and story (she's me, so I'm happy about that) that I'm glad I carried the 8r 'thing' onto the next generation: her ingame kids are Procrastin8r and Oblivi8r.
They would not be even close to as meaningful to me - and probably many folks who know me and my characters - without the little tweak 8r.
But by all means. Be average and common. Just be aware that if you can't find a version of the SAME NAME ALL YOUR FRIENDS WANTED... it's because it's average and common. -

Quote:But like I've said... I asked them about it at the comic con, and they told me what was wrong with it and that it's NOT completely dead... so someday, we may see this feature there.Bill, please don't make jokes like that. If we can't trust you for our seriousface, who can we trust?!
I too would like it there, though in the game would suit me fine too, I like knowing those things. -
Quote:I'd like to know too. As always, we can brainjam to see if there are better - less obvious, or more available - names right here for you.Out of curiosity, what were some of the names you tried? I usually don't have an issue getting names and I have been quite surprised at some of the names I have been able to obtain.
The only name I didn't get was actually one I realized later wasn't the one I *intended* to get, Dream.Weaver with the . in it. But she should have been Dream Walker, which I still don't know if it's available or not, either way I don't play her much anyway... But she IS one of my oldest real-world created characters. I'd give that name up with the dot and all, if someone asked, but someone would have to be pretty desperate to have *the same name as however many others* out there... Rather see something unique. -
They have psychics working overtime to determine the most number of people to be unable to attend, you know.

I've got a couple:
Remember when you could push your camera distance WAY far back? It was really helpful for costume contests.
And... the FIRST Council/5th Battles?

Well, while I don't see it happening for many of the reasons listed above, I WOULD like to have something like it.
It doesn't make much sense to me when I choose, say, a robotic looking body and character whose background includes mechanical things, to be just as weak to Toxic or whatnot, as a fleshy person. I'd choose a vulnerability to electric and improve resistances to other things.
I think it'd be cool, I DO like that kind of tweaking on a character, it's kind of what I'd hoped the game would do originally.
If we ever get a truly global modifier that we can use some kind of enhancements on, that may be where they could put this sort of thing. Where you'd maybe get drops for "energy resistance with fire vulnerability" or whatever. Always coming with a minor + and - to each. -
Quote:Who would suspect Nemesis has put his brain into a female body? Now THAT is something I don't think he's done in the game, has he?
As for the Nemesis, it doesn't seem to me that he has much of an issue with women... after all they are used as Automatons. Likewise, his plans are so far reaching and "brilliant" that I would think he would see how beneficial being an equal opportunity employer might be. -
As always when this comes up, I'd love to see more female opponents. Even down into the lowest levels, an all grrl gang similar to the Hellions or the Outcast, the Family, and definitely into the middle levels - there really should be a precursor to the Knives. The Warriors are all boys, aren't they? Silly things. They won't get very far. Amazons would rule

Quote:They don't have to be on hide. They can simply already be on teams, instanced, or even zoning.I already play on freedom. I don't consider 29 players between the levels of 11-20 while I'm trying to level my elec/kin corruptor to fit the definition of "high population", but ymmv.
Maybe they were all in hide?
Your "29 people" is fantasy. Are you playing at 2 AM pacific time on redside? OIC. I mean... seriously. Flawed math is flawed. 29 people is 3+ full teams. All you need is ONE more person to make a "team" - you don't need 8 person teams 100% of the time, seriously.
Subscriptions have been up since 2 issues ago. New games come out and are in beta; school has started, the biggest "threat" to this game is "real life".
So,.... no. It's not that they need to be hiding. You just need to learn to form a team. -
