I sure hope the problems can be fixed. It would be nice for ATI/AMD but it would be really great for this game. I shudder to think how many customers have been lost because they were crashing and getting weird graphic errors with a high end ATI/AMD card.

Now we need to wait and see. "No timeline" doesn't exactly fill me with excitement, but it's not a message of doom, either.

    [/ QUOTE ]

In all fairness though, things do seem to have gotten a bit better with ATI compatibility over time. Before I switched to Nvidia, I remember the random crashes, missing textures and alt+tab bugs, but since I switched back to ATI recently, I don't have any of those nagging bugs anymore, just the lingering inability to mix FSAA with high water effects or depth of field.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Agree's, the problems with ATI seem somewhat overblown and entrenched in the forum culture.

Certainly the mutually exclusive AA/AF and Bloom/DOF/Water problem still exists but for example I don't like the Bloom/DOF and water on low looks the same as water on high (except for some/all reflections iirc), so this 'problem' doesn't bother me at all.

And I don't remember a crashing problem except for 1 driver version a year ago or so, which was quickly sorted out on the boards here and everyone avoided that version.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I think it's mostly just people who have higher standards, or a better eye that are terribly bothered by the problems. BillZ can tell the difference between using various settings, while I can not. The incompatibilities are mildly annoying to me, but what bothers me MORE about ATI cards, and even to some extent NVidia cards, is the fact that it DOES require you to make changes within the drivers in order to get the combination of appearance and performance that you want.

For me personally, it isn't a huge deal to go into the CCC and tweak my settings. For a lot of people though, doing that is very daunting. All those big words, antialiasing, anisotropic filtering, etc is not something a lot of people can even fathom. Then you run into cases where settings you change to improve CoX, have a negative effect on other games.

It IS a valid complaint though that these issues have been brought up over and over, with no response other than "we're aware of the issue". Working in a software development company myself, I understand how you have to make decisions on what is best to spend resources on. As much as we love this game, a 4+ year old game is unlikely to continue to get a lot of resources thrown at it to fix issues that really only impact a small percentage of people.

One thing NVidia has (ATI may have something similar though I have never seen it in CCC), is profiles for specific games. THAT is something I would like for ATI cards, so that I can tweak to my heart's content for CoX, and NOT have it mess with settings in my other games.
  2. You might try just lowering the particle physics. Either the quality of them, or the number of them (the slider underneath). I personally find the particle effects annoying, and turn them way down even when I am using a high end machine. Try setting the physics quality to medium, and cut the number of particles in half. I bet it makes a big difference. Since you don't have a physics card, it could be making a big drain on your system trying to do all that.

Locking up IE for me as well...

    Version: 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254

    [/ QUOTE ]

Our apologies for the continuing issues with browsing the new website under Internet Explorer version 6. We're working to resolve the issue. If you want to see the site now, you may consider upgrading IE to version 7 or downloading FireFox, Chrome or any other popular web browsing software.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Sorry, but telling me to download a different browser isn't a very good PR move, nor is it a viable solution. If I wanted to use the crap that is IE7/FireFox/Chrome, I'd be using it.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I wouldn't say it is a bad PR move, especially the way he phrased it. He said that if you want to see it NOW you can download an alternative browser. The fact that you do not like any of the other browsers and insist on running an old browser that is quite frankly, crap, is not a reason to be ticked at them. In some cases, yes, you don't have the option of upgrading your browser. For example, people on corporate PCs may be prevented from upgrading their browser.

Firefox is a much better, and faster browser than IE in almost every category, not to mention more secure. It is also possible to use themes in Firefox to make it look pretty much like IE. Honestly, I would agree about not upgrading to IE7, in some respects. I do not like the layout of IE7 at all. You have to make a choice though. See the new site right away using an alternative browser, or wait until they get around to fixing the site for IE6. If you decide to remain on IE6, keep in mind that you may not be ABLE to view the new site. Depending on how they have written it, those functions may simply not exist in IE6.

I'm more upset that this didn't include new forums.

    [/ QUOTE ]

The forum migration will have a few more steps involved in it. Very soon we will have the new forums available as a beta test for people to get comfortable with vBulletin as well as uncover any problems with the forum software and allow time to make corrections to address them. As you may be aware, we've been using vBulletin for the Closed Beta Test forums for Issue 13 and have done a good bit of troubleshooting there.

This migration plan is to ensure a smooth transition for everyone involved. Thanks for your interest and continued support!

    [/ QUOTE ]

Fantastic LH. The new forums are a much needed addition.

I find it interesting that the NVIDIA "The way it's meant to be played" logo has been replaced with an ATI logo. I know they supplied video cards at the recent Hero Con, and they are sponsoring the current costume contest... but wasn't this game originally coded for NVIDIA support (hence the problems that several ATI users were having)?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Wow. I didn't even notice that. Awesome. Although honestly, I have had really good luck with ATI and CoX over the last year.

  7. I can't say I noticed the shortness of supply for the ghosts. The two main characters I have been using lately already have the prior years Halloween badges, so I haven't spent much time doing the trick or treat thing this year. I noticed not getting the tier 3's as treats, but figured it was on purpose, or I just had bad luck and only got tier 1 and 2 treats.

As far as the frequency of the zombie invasions... I don't know. Maybe Guardian hero-side is just lucky. The invasions seemed to be happening one right after another, generally 2 zones at a time (well, within a couple minutes of each other at least).

It does not seem like an effective form of advertising. I also said that if they don't spend much effort on it, then fine. Doesn't change the fact that I find the idea, and the sites themselves, to be silly and pointless.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Okay. 138 million Facebook users disagree with you. And 955 of them as of this post don't seem to think it's a "complete waste of time" to push the "Become a fan" button on the page that Koschej took a few minutes to make.

Also, why does everyone think this is a City Vault replacement? They don't have anything in common, except that if you asked for a description of both they might share the word "social." The City Vault is a much, much, much bigger project in scope than this Facebook page; it would be a full-fledged web application.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Honestly, I think you are reading far more vitriol into my comments than was there. The fact that Facebook has all those members is not entirely relevant. The percentage of those users who are likely to stumble upon the CoH Facebook page, and then buy the game because of it, is minuscule. That is assuming that you consider all those millions of users to be actual distinct users.

Do you remember the CoX Myspace page? How well did THAT work out? Ever hear anything about it nowadays? That's kind of my point.

As far as the City Vault thing... no idea, other than it seems like a splitting of effort and usefulness. Once the Vault is available, what will be the point of the Facebook entry?

I can't express how silly this is. Yes, I am thrilled that CoX is doing more to get its name out there. Facebook though? Facebook and Myspace are abominations.

Personally, I have never seen any Facebook or Myspace site that didn't look like crap. They are always either completely bland, or have so much CRAP all over them, that you can't see anything useful.

Hopefully no one at NC^2 is spending much time working on this. I think it is a complete waste of time. Unless they have decided to completely scrap the Vault. Then they might as well have some other community site.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I'm really loving the irony of someone who runs around in a computer game pretending to be a superhero with incredible powers being "above" Facebook and MySpace users.

I guess we all have to be better than someone else.

Seriously, it probably took Koschej about ten minutes to set up an account and another ten to write the copy for the page. Even if you "cannot abide" looking at a website, there are lots of people who can.

It's free and it's fun. Why are you mad again?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Never said I was mad. I said it was silly and I don't see the point of it. The Facebook and Myspace "phenomenon" doesn't make sense to me. The IDEA of social networking, fine. The problem is, a large portion of them are horrible eysores, and quickly lose any semblance of usefulness as more and more junk gets added to them.

I also don't see any irony in my feelings towards Facebook and Myspace. I don't think I am "above" them. I just don't LIKE them. I don't like the implementation of them, and I don't see the point in extending effort in maintaining a page like that for the game. It does not seem like an effective form of advertising. I also said that if they don't spend much effort on it, then fine. Doesn't change the fact that I find the idea, and the sites themselves, to be silly and pointless.

Mad about it? Not at all. It doesn't affect my enjoyment of the game, and since I don't plan on participating in that portion of it, it really doesn't impact me, other than as a conversation piece.

Obviously, you're generalizing. Lots of people are hidden on Facebook. Unless you're my Friend, you can't see my page. I have very little applications on my fb page. I find that they are too busy and contrived.

The good fb and MySpace profiles are usually the ones that no one ever sees.

    [/ QUOTE ]

No, I'm not generalizing. The fact that all the "good" pages are hidden means, they don't count. I don't care about private pages, because I am never ever going to see them. I base my opinion on the vast majority of sites that I have run across. Have I seen a vast majority of all the Facebook pages? No. I don't generally troll Facebook pages. I have however run across Facebook pages that are linked to from other places I visit. In the vast majority of those cases, the page ends up looking either generic, or like some epileptic monkey was let loose with an html editor. In either case, they seldom look professional. This includes things like Myspace pages for movies, and actors. Sites that are "official" and advertised on TV or whatever.

People using them to actually keep in touch with friends or whatever? Hey, go for it. I don't like the sites, but I don't have anything against you using them. I just think it is a silly way for a company to spend marketing money.

  12. Just one minor comment about one of these rules:
    [ QUOTE ]

    4. Private communication between Customer Support, NC Interactive, Inc. (“NCsoft”) members, moderators and administrators of the forum and the forum users is not to be made public on these forums or by any other venue.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I understand the rule about posting this communication on these forums. Not sure how you intend to enforce what people post on OTHER forums. A lot of us use basically the same forum IDs on multiple forums, but not everyone. It would probably be better to specify posting links to other sites where those private communications is against the rules.

This has never been anything that has impacted me personally, but let me use this as an example. User A gets banned for some reason. They post the text of the warning, or whatever discussion, on some other forum. Now, let's say one of the mods here happens to also browse this third party site and sees this message, and the poster at THAT site has a name similar to mine. What is to stop that mod from assuming *I* am the one that posted that information?

I specified no links to third party sites where that information is posted, as a way to lessen the chances of abuse by someone posting the private communication elsewhere, and then just putting a link here to that site.

As for the rest of the rules, I really don't care one way or the other. I tend to behave myself (at least on THIS board), and most of these are just common courtesy anyway. If streamlining these rules means even enforcement of the rules, I'm all for it.

Sure, some of them seem a bit heavy handed as written, especially given the leeway we have been granted in the past. The discussion of other games is likely to generate more than a few warnings. That is too bad. We have had any number of friendly and productive discussions of other games and MMOs in the past.

It has been discussed ad nauseum for years. The given reason for why it is the way it is, is for security. So that someone can't log you out and delete all your characters. If they log out to delete a character, they would have to be able to log back in.

Whether this is effective, or outweighs the convenience factor doesn't much matter at this point. Feel free to bring it up in another thread in Suggestions. I expect you to get quite a bit of resistance, and lots more bickering, and probably not a few attacks for bringing it up again. Try not to take it too hard. Not everyone has been on the forums or playing the game as long as some of us, and don't know that this is not a new topic.

As the other poster said though, don't try to make it a petition, because that is against the forum rules.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Yes, I suppose I could have searched (endlessly) through the forum to locate old posts about this. But that would take precious time away from actually playing.

That all makes sense, though. I guess for that reason I can understand and concede to the necessity of security.

    I guess using 'petition' was too strong a word for this context, in a forum. Although, in my defense, the word itself can also mean; {from dictionary.com}
    PETITION:
    2. a request made for something desired, esp. a respectful or humble request, as to a superior or to one of those in authority; a supplication or prayer: a petition for aid; a petition to God for courage and strength.
    3. something that is sought by request or entreaty: to receive one's full petition.

However, I'll be sure to use the term of request from now on.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't trying to be a jerk about it. I know it can be a pain to actually find some stuff. Just thought I would pre-empt some of the stuff you are likely to run into. Especially the "petition" thing, because it is sure to set off some people.

While I find that thoroughly amusing, I am mostly waiting to hear the cries about how new customers are getting screwed over by vet rewards.
  17. I love you guys!

And yay for retroactive vet rewards!

And drag and drop organizing! Oh frabjous day, callou callay!
  18. I can sort of understand how the early game hero-side could turn people off. That first mission way over with all the purple guys IS a bit annoying. To me, it is just part of learning aggro management. I know my first few times through, I headed to that mission like I was Shaggy being chased by the ice-cream phantom! Not particularly heroic.

The one thing that I, and I'm sure many others, would like, is for them to make it clear that you do NOT have to actually do the Hollows arcs, and for them to NOT make going to Wincott be a mandatory mission no matter what contact you go to at level 5. For me personally, when I make a new character, right around the time I hit level 3 or 4, I run over to the Hollows and talk to Wincott right then so I don't have to get that silly mission.

The Hollows, although it really IS a great zone with a great storyline, is just NOT friendly to people at the level they are sent there at. No travel power, HUGE zone, a big freaking pit that is a royal pain to get out of if you have no travel power, and enemies that are way WAY higher than you. The only positive thing is, at least you generally are too low to get debt. It can get almost comical trying to get to your missions. I remember a time when a LOT of people would use Hover to go all the way across the zone. Took forever, but was still faster than "run, die, go to AP, back to Hollows, run, die, etc" Like that first mission in AP though, the Hollows is FANTASTIC for learning aggro management, and navigation. It is just a really tough school to get pushed into.

I can't tell you how many people I have run into that think you HAVE to do the Hollows missions. You can eat up a lot of levels in the Hollows and miss out on other good content.

Also remember that the Drop Mission feature is your friend. Especially since the timer is now once every 3 days you can drop a mission.

I really never got the feeling that the game itself was too complicated. How most powers worked made sense to me, movement was simple enough, damage types... I don't know. It all seemed pretty intuitive to me. Especially considering some of the other MMO's out there.

Debt is also a pretty minor penalty compared to a lot of other MMO's. We have a debt cap, so you can never get TOO much debt, and the amount of debt you get will be dropping even more soon. I don't think that was part of the 11.5 patch anyway. Paying off debt is relatively fast, especially if you team a lot, and the entire time you are working off debt, you are STILL advancing.

As for the Vet rewards... well, that is kind of a no-win situation for the Devs, and gets argued about all the time around here. Think about it this way though, most of the Vet rewards are NOT particularly great. I have the 33 month reward on my account. Out of all the rewards I have gotten, the only ones that I feel are worth anything to me, is the Sands of Mu temp power, and the Nemesis Staff temp power. Oh yeah, and the base teleporter. That one I like a lot. The rest of it, meh. Don't really care about wings, or trenchcoats, or kilts or bellyshirts. The costume change tokens and Respecs? I have never once used any of them on any character I have.

I can understand the feeling of NEVER being able to get them if you came to the game late, but honestly, it isn't like you are missing out on much. Even the Nemesis staff and Sands of Mu powers aren't all that great. You can't enhance them, so Sands of Mu in particular, becomes a nice way to fan your enemies. It's nice when it hits, but it isn't like it gives that much actual help.

I know it can be hard to get other people into the game. The only thing I can say is, if you can get them to try it, be sure to have a known team of people rather than a PUG. Things are more likely to run smoothly, and you can show them how much fun it really can be.

Don't get caught up in the details too much, unless you LIKE that kind of thing. You can practically put yourself on cruise control and just madly click powers till the bad guys fall down. NOT a suggestion for if you are teaming with people other than your close friends. But you can do it, and the game is fun. Or you can analyze your powers, enhancements, and the bad guys' stats and plan out your battles.

That is one of the things that just keeps me hanging around this game. There are so many ways to play the game. I can log in my kat/reg scrapper if I don't want to think, and just want to pummel stuff. Or I can log in my emp/ele defender and try to keep people buffed, healed, and drain the endurance of the bad guys. Or any of a thousand other ways to play.
  19. [ QUOTE ]
Ah, in that case, no I am not. It's just been my general experience (and others as far as I've read) that driver systems from Omega seem to work MUCH better than the CCC system. It was actually my frustration with a rather persistent CCC error that caused me to seek out Omega drivers to begin with.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Not sure I would agree, at least as far as the Omega drivers are concerned for ATI. They are a great fallback though if you can't get the CCC ones to work. Omega drivers used to be my number one pick though. They do pretty good at optimizing settings for performance, which tends to help out the lower-end cards. However, if you were having problems with CCC itself, and this fixes them, then mission accomplished.

The -usetexenvcombine switch will make CoX use a simpler rendering method, which is far less intense on your system, which should give you better performance, especially in combination with the Omega drivers.

Or so, the theory goes. While I've not had to go through it myself, my wife has, probably a good 5-6 times the last few years. 22. I have installed the 7.10's on Vista. Keep in mind, this is on a laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon x1400, so probably not of much use to those on desktop cards. The new drivers have had no ill effect so far. I haven't gotten any performance increase, or at least, not enough consistent increase to be noticeable. It DID fix one odd issue I have had forever. When I first launch CoH, my taskbar stays in the foreground. I used to have to click within CoH (I run fullscreen, NOT windowed), before I could do anything. After installing the 7.10's, the game is properly in the foreground.

At least nothing broke on these for me. I haven't done a lot of playinig with the settings. Possibly there is some magical combination that will give me a big boost. We will see.

Is there any reason why the powers that be have not decided to do anything to help us ATI users. I just don't really understand why they only support nividia im seriously contemplating buying a cheap sub 100 buck nvidia card just so i can play

    [/ QUOTE ]

To be honest, for those of us running Vista, and particularly Vista with a laptop ATI card, so far it seems that ATI users are getting the better end of the stick. I haven't been paying attention to the NVidia threads lately, but ATI had their drivers working better than the NVidia ones, and got them working sooner than NVidia did. In my case, I had to do very little to get my laptop with Mobility Radeon x1400 to work at relatively good speeds, and have had no other issues. ATI's drivers were the first ones to get rid of the disappearing cursor problem too.

I did do some tweaking with settings, both in the driver as well as in-game, but honestly, I haven't had any issues since about the 7.6 drivers for Vista. Not alt-tab problems, no mouse cursor problems, pretty good performance, etc.

Like I said, I can't speak for the NVidia side, and I can't speak for the desktop card side, but this is the first time I have been an advocate of ATI in many many years. I always used to be strictly NVidia.

Yeesh everytime I post here I remember why I don't, oy, people who read a single line, make assumptions and don't bother reading the rest.

Basically my comment was sarcasm, not serious thus the use of smilies, I tried to explain it in my second post that I was merely pointing out how I felt Ex had incorrectly addressed the change in her choice of wording. (Really wish I could have used a strike through instead of having to resort to red bold color, sure that didn't help )

Thats all my point was, a post made by a red name that seems to be placing one over the other gets people up in a tiffy. Not saying I'm up in a tiffy, like I said in my first post, this is a GOOD idea. If anything maybe this will help bring more people villain side, and introduce more people to it.

But to be honest I know why the issues have been predominantly focused on co-op, the devs have to look to the future for what is easiest to them with a smaller dev team. Address issues and add content and at the same time keep customers happy and interested so the money continues to flow. That doesn't mean however that it doesn't bother some people. And I'm not about to fault them their feelings.

So the point of all of my rambling? Ex should consider rewording her original post, thats all I'm saying.

    >.>
    <.<
    >.<

I still hold onto my plea for more SFs *debates adding it to her signature* I offer the dev willing to champion my cause an endless flow of twinkies! (Okay maybe not but everyone likes twinkies right? I'm a villain bribery is okay!).

Actually, I was more confused by the fact that anyone (and not you in particular) would find anything wrong with the merge of forums. It just doesn't make sense to me. Your post simply included what I thought was a good example of the kind of bizarre (in my opinion) posts that people make regarding implied slights against CoV side. It wasn't aimed specifically at YOU. I should have made myself more clear. I was using your post to illustrate what I don't understand about the whole CoH vs. CoV debate.

Of course, it could be said that I am just ignorant of how bad CoV gets treated, since I have never particularly enjoyed the Villain side and have always seen it as just another part of CoH.

Take that line, one word and add an s and the tone of that is COMPLETELY different. There was no need to single out the villains group, or even to mention they were simply renaming the CoH forum. Doesn't need to be mentioned, don't add fuel to the already raging fire, and certainly don't rub salt in a wound. Ex and Lighthouse are suppose to set a tone and standard for everyone else, putting one group on the defensive while making another seem favored is only asking for trouble.

But meh, thats just me, I chalk it up to bad PR is all, happens, but you're looking at what is basically getting most people's feathers ruffled. Just leave names and groups out unless absolutely necessary. Its not a them or us situation so don't make it one.

Sure that makes no more sense then the other post, going to bed.

I guess I don't see what the problem is. What does adding an S to forum have to do with anything? There was one CoV General Forum. It was simply stated that the forum for CoV general was being removed and that instead there will be one big happy general forum. I really can't see: 1) why it would be seen as singling out Villains, or 2) how else it should have been worded, since one forum involved is named with Heroes and the other named with Villains. How else do you tell everyone that they are merging them without specifying which ones they are talking about?
