I was the same as you, at first, wasn't sure of Scrappers.

My first char ever created was a BS/DA Scrapper. At about level 12 or so I abandoned him and started creating other Archetypes. It took a few months but i was back with my Scrapper. I just found the hectic nature of being in a crowd surrounded by enemies and swinging my broadsword around more appealing than firing from long range.

And at later levels it was great to see everyone panic and scream for clear mind when we meet psi groups. I simply clecked the button for my Obsidian Shield and charged in.

I recently gave my Scrapper a respec and he's even more fun now. I still go back and use him even though he hit 50 about a month ago.

PB/WS are fun but I think there will be another Scrapper in my future.

Yeah, debt will be tougher for villains at first!
We will all be low level & those goodie heros will be a lot higher.

Just remember that debt is limited to 10 kills now! (or 20 in mission kills cause they only give half debt)
