Because of CoH, I

was able to save up enough money to buy my first house.

learned to build a computer from scratch.

learned why I like nVidia cards more than Radeon cards.

understand the color wheel a lot better. And abuse it in making new characters all the time.

discovered I am obsessed with how my character looks in MMOs. So much so that it makes it hard for me to play other MMOs for any length of time.

made some really cool friends who I would never, ever have met otherwise. Pulse, Myrmydon and others -- really good guys and gals who have gone from being people I type to to people I know and talk to.

found out that I am way more fond of having minions do all my work for me instead of blasting things myself. I am trying to apply this learning in other areas of my life.

Over the past 8 years, this game has meant a lot to me. I took small vacations from it from time to time, but I have always paid a subscription -- I felt that it was 'my game', I had watched it grow and evolve and had been a supporter financially and in other ways. And it was always there for me -- through ups and downs it was something I could count on. I knew it would have to go away someday, but it makes me very sad that it's happening now.
