Any stacking and raising items useful guide?

I've seen there's a lot of threads devoted to base construction, but maybe because of that I'm lost on what are the steps I should follow to build a room with several floors and staircase, any suggestions or links please?

Once you have placed an item you can use shift, alt or ctrl to modify its placement. EG Shift+drag up or down moves the item vertically

(Probably. It's late but definitely works with one of the keys )
