HELP! 2 Very different builds 1 major problem

Thanks for looking and thanks for any help you might offer!

After my other thread on choosing between a brute/scrapper/tanker ( http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=290912 ) I finally settled on a tanker. I think in the end it will will fulfill more of what I am seeking to play in the end game.

Now, I went for 2 builds, neither I guess are super popular, but I need extreme advice on both. Now, you'll NOTE: neither build it a 10bil inf build cracked out on purples that I won't ever afford or get lucky enough for drops.

Now, for your picking apart and helping me understand the reality of slotting tankers pleasure I present the following, please, be brutal, it's the only way I can learn and succeed at being a cut above the rest of the tankers.

Both build are what I would like to play since I want to also be a bit of a roleplayer with them and have concepts. I know they're not uber FotM Invuln/SS or Fire/SS builds, but I'm hoping they aren't too low on the consideration chart.

THANKS AGAIN GANG!

I don't understand the problem. Build them both, play them both, have fun and profit!

What's hard about that?

I've come to the conclusion that I can tank pretty much with anything. When I see different concepts, tanking is not an issue. I'd rather you picked on one concept. Each build will take some time to come up with a suggestion as there is for me quite a number of changes to make. Pick the fun or most interesting concept and let it challenge you.

Certain things to aim for are Def, get all positions melee/range/aoe to 45% with Shield. Then aim for plenty of rechg.

With Electric its possibly easier to work on S/L/E/N to 45% def then work on rechg.

Extra Hitpoints is itself extra Regen and great with resistance.

Damage is fight duration reduction and great for conserving endurance.

Tie Power pool powers together for example: Don't get boxing and then tough 10 levels later and then weave another 10 levels later, get them close together.

That is kind of the problem I'm having, I can't seem to actually figure out what I need to slot where to get the defenses to the cap of 45% on either build.

Everyone makes it sound so easy, but I can't seem to make that happen in MIDS.

It just feels so hodge podge.

In the end I will play either one (I am not a power gamer with time to blow on 15 builds trying them out so I kind of need to get as much insight as possible on 1 build and go with that) but I need to get an idea of which one will end up working out the best.

For starters I'll echo Fireheart. Make and play both, and see which you enjoy playing more (although I should warn you as a player with dozens of alts myself, you may end up loving both. ).

Now, on to the builds. For the SD/WM build, the biggest thing I notice is that you're not at softcap (45%). For an SD tanker, this really should be your primary goal and right now you're falling short in all three positions. You're close (with one ally in range of Phalanx Fighthing you're capped to Melee and AOE) but I prefer not to rely on that.

For starters, I would work in additional +Def powers including Weave and either Combat Jumping or Maneuvers (I use all three on my Shield tank). Since Ranged Defense is the lowest of the three, you'll need to tweak your IO sets to get more of this - six-sloted Mako's Bite is one good source. You also aren't using the Steadfast Protection +3% Defense IO at all - this could go in either Deflection or Tough. Here is my tank's build to give you a few ideas.

Now, on to the Elec/KM build. For my Elec tank, I went for the near-softcap of 32.5%, which is softcap with one purple inspiration. Since you have no native Defense to build from, I found this easier to build for with fewer compromises in offensive potential.

I notice on both builds you're slotting the full Might of the Tanker set, which doesn't help you when going for positional Defense. On many of my Tankers I slot only the +Resistance IO and leave out the rest. Again, here's my Electric Armor tank's build to give you some ideas. I hope these builds are helpful for you despite having different secondaries. If I have time later on this weekend I may try to retool your existing builds, but generally I prefer to let the owner of the character do that so you can decide what compromises you'll accept and which you won't.

I greatly appreciate the help Justaris, I do, and I'm really not trying to sound snarky or unappreciative, but your builds are bit on the high end. You shield build is easily somewhere in the 5bil inf range and that's not even market average.

I get that for some that is chump change and they have that 10 times over on alts with AH stacked with purples. However I don't. I'm lucky to see 500mil and often wait weeks for someone to drop a recipe that I need cheap enough for me to get it.

I was pretty well thrilled when you mentioned not needing to get the whole ATO set.

I posted the builds for a referent, not necessarily to be adopted as-is, but just the same I see your point. I'm going to try to adapt the builds you supplied with that budgetary range in mind. I'll post some ideas later on tonight.

I get that for some that is chump change and they have that 10 times over on alts with AH stacked with purples. However I don't. I'm lucky to see 500mil and often wait weeks for someone to drop a recipe that I need cheap enough for me to get it.

I was pretty well thrilled when you mentioned not needing to get the whole ATO set.
dont think most builds are built over night ..most of us here have high end builds but also been here since the start so money isnt as bad.

also to help make money use the market,tf's,hero merits from the ssa's/tip missions and hami raids . there are soo many ways to get money and the ones you need. nothing really is now now now unless you hoard like mad. if someone shows you a high end build and you like it. then make it a "work in progress".

This.
Make running the first arc of SSA1 a weekly habit with each of your toons. You can pick up expensive recipes to slot, or you can sell 1 expensive recipe to buy 5 or 6 of the cheaper ones. Check the market to see what the going rates are before you spend your hero/vil merits to maintain maximum efficiency.

I have an enh storage table in my SG base that is dedicated to my current project toon. As the toon is leveling up, I use all of my toons for earning merits>recipes then store them in that table until the project toon is able to use them. By getting enhancements before you are able to slot them you can help avoid "buy it now" prices. If you play often, and put all of your own toons in your own group, it is possible to manage a solo super group base.
