MA/WP Scrapper: Tear My Build Apart PLEASE!

ClawsandEffect

Okay, my scrapper's original build, while somewhat tough, was ridiculously squishy (frankenslotted AND pre-Inherent Fitness).

I've rebuilt him now and am looking for feedback. Not promising to tear my build apart again. But I figure it can't hurt.

So here he is. The Mighty Pi.

Very tough build. In general it looks very good. I do have a few nitpicks, tho.

1) Several attacks with a pretty low acc. Not horrible low, but low enough that you'll be unhappy vs +level enemies, or vs incarnate enemies, or if you ever get tohit debuffed.

It might be not too bad, but you have only a +7% Acc from your one Crushing Impact set. That's not going to be a big help, and it won't be any at lvl 46 and under. You even skipped Focused Chi, of you can't even occasionally push your odds all the way up. However, Vigor makes this problem go away except when exempting, and it's hard to go wrong with Vigor on a WP alt. But you went Musculature (not a bad choice at all, really, if you solve your acc issue somehow).

2) You have 3 slots spend in RttC to up the tohit debuff. I think that's to much. It net's ya about an extra 1.5% deduffing. You are right ont eh edge of capped anyone, so the extra 1.5% above the 3.75% base is not doing anything most of the time. And when you might need it most, vs some AVs, they'll likely ignore it anyhow.. I'd use the slots elsewhere.

3) I'd skip Spring Attack unless you just want it for the theme of it. It does about 2/3 the damage of Dragon's Tail, and yet takes about 7 times as long to recharge. You'd be served in damage output but dropping it, and taking Assault, to push more damage out via the 6 or 7 Dragon's Tail Attacks that come between Springs, and use all those slots elsewhere.
That said, theme-wise, spring attack suits this combo, so if that's why it's there, it's certainly not breaking the build.

Only those 3 things stand out to me as being worth commenting on, and only the first one is any real concern. I think #2 and #3 are areaou could improve on, but it was my build, I'd not bother respecing just to change either of those.

If you split the Superior Scrapper's Strike between 2 powers you can get an additional 5% S/L defense and 3% Max HP.

You can't get those kind of numbers outside a purple set, and there is no such defense bonus in any purple set.

I'll play with it when I get home and see what I can do. Even though I don't have a high level WP scrapper, I somehow know the set very well.

MA/WP has been my main since WP was introduced.

First thing... No Focus Chi?
I... don't know what to say to that. If you're 50 and comfortable with out it I guess that's OK, but I can't imagine any single power from the MA primary that has a more significant impact on overall play of the set with the possible exception of Dragon's Tail.

I'll second the notion on splitting the Scrapper's Strike set. It opens up a lot more slotting possibilities. It seems trivial, but that last 4% of defense on the way to soft cap truly makes a dramatic difference in overall durability. I'll also second the accuracy concerns. If it's working for you, that's cool, but it does seem awfully low.

I do have your back on Spring Attack. I was skeptical when I first took it, but it does add a significant amount of AoE damage potential and I wouldn't give it up for the world now. Once you choose a Judgment power (I like Vorpal thematically, but any of them really), you'll find you actually have reasonably good AoE potential when you need it.

Do you use Thunder Kick regularly? I had it in my build forever, but finally just recently dropped it and the increase in DPS was noticeable and immediate.

Same question about Crane Kick, only I dropped that ages ago when I realized I was spending way more time chasing critters I had just punted than actually dealing damage to them. If you like it for the fun factor, that's great. I'm even considering replacing Eagle's Claw with it, since I really only use Eagle's Claw as an occasional filler attack anyway. With ~%62% global recharge, I find I can reliably put together an attack chain with just Storm Kick, Cobra Strike, and Crippling Axe Kick (occasionally I might need to toss in a Dragon's Tail or an Eagle's Claw).

If you're curious, here's my build I'm playing now. Soft cap to S/L/F/C/E/N. I don't run the speed pool, and don't really miss it at all, but if you really wanted it you could swap it in for Warrior's Challenge. I run Focused Accuracy and Sprint continuously without issues during normal play. Extended DPS sessions (extreme scenarios) did require occasional blues and/or toggling down sprint and tough until I picked up Ageless.

An endurance mod boost from the alpha slot makes a world of difference for this build. You can get there in the radial branch of the Musculature tree, but I favored Agility for the defense/recharge boost.

For what it's worth, the Hecatomb set is a recent addition. I played this build for a long time with a Crushing Impact set in there and it didn't change the playability of the toon much at all for me. Ditto for the Gladiator's proc, although that last bit of defense did noticeably improve survivability in extreme situations.

Also, I run a Kin Combat knockdown proc in all my main chain attacks. You should be able to significantly bump DPS if you swapped those out for damage procs, I just find the extra knockdown hella fun.

EDIT: also, as a quick and cheap band-aid to get your Energy defense up a bit more, take a look at my slotting for Spring Attack. You can pick up another 2.5% by slotting three Cleaving Blow instead of the franken-slotting you have along side the Eradication sets.

EDIT TWO: you might think I'm nuts for having so few attacks and no hasten. I know I thought that sort of build was nuts for a long long time, and only arrived there after a long evolution of trial and error. I would recommend trying it though. You have the luxury of having all the tools already. Just try pulling Hasten, Thunder Kick and either Crane Kick or Eagle's Claw from your tray and then running a mission or three. The play style may not be your cup of tea, but I wager you will at the very least be surprised at your comparative performance.

EDIT THREE: LOL. I just noticed who the original poster is. Hyperstrike, I am now embarrassed. You have significantly more experience than I thought when I wrote this post. Please take any parts this post that might raise an eyebrow with a grain of salt. I made several references to play style and game mechanics that I'm sure you are well aware of. I'll leave the post up in its entirety, in hopes it might help someone else down the line.

Heh.

No problem. It always helps when people explain it as well. This way, if I miss something (especially something obvious), they can jog my memory.

I ran into that when putting the build together last night. Swapped off his first build into his second (which was all out-leveled SOs). Then was wondering why I couldn't respec past level 44.

Went round and round on it for like 20 minutes.

Then someone finally noticed "You're level 45".

Me: HUH?!?!?!?!?

Oh yeah. Some dumb*** forgot that he'd swapped off that build at level 45 and never went back and leveled it to 50. Dur hur hur!

*Facepalm*

Also, I'm looking at replacing the Musculature with Nerve.

I'm also looking at following the suggestion of yanking the ToHit debuffs out of RTTC and using them to prop accuracy on some of my other attacks.

I'll take a serious look at splitting the Scrapper's Strike setup as well. Not sure if I will. Any suggestions for BEST power choice for the proc?

As far as I know, it doesn't matter. It's a global buff akin to the LoG recharge bonus. Following that logic, it generally goes into a power I use the least as it's per power recharge bonus is relatively small.

Nerve would definitely help the accuracy concerns and help free up the build a bit with the defense boost.

As an anecdotal reference:

I originally had Conserve Power and the Spiritual alpha. I rarely used Conserve Power, but when I needed to it was definitely a lifesaver. Then I switched to Agility to try it out. I realized I never used conserve power anymore. I swapped it for Focused Accuracy with one end IO. I discovered I could run it continuously with some very minor occasional concessions that I mentioned in my earlier post. The end mod bonus is just that significant on a build that has three recovery powers. Fast forward to my current build which has a T3 Ageless (either one, I have both at the moment), and I never have end or accuracy issues, ever.

EDIT: in the chunk I posted, note I have 10 toggles switched on. That's how i play that toon 24/7. I just checked in game, and barring a particularly unlucky RNG run on the Performance Shifter procs, I couldn't run him out of endurance while attacking continuously using my most endurance heavy attacks on a target dummy with Super Jump toggled on, and that's without using ageless. (note I didn't experience the unlucky RNG thing after several minutes, but I could see it being a theoretical possibility).

Agility also has the benefit of recharge bonuses down the line, whereas most of the rest of the bonuses from Nerve will go completely unused in your build.

Food for thought.

EDIT TWO: tangenital musing: Given the revelation in the previous edit, I will have to experiment with the survivability impact of running my toon with Musculature instead. even more tangenital: We need an offensive (damage) oriented Destiny option.

With 4+ End/Sec recovery, I'm not really having end issues now. And yeah, I may go with FA.

Additionally, I don't want to come to rely on a Destiny power for buffs since they're not up all the time (bad enough I'm relying on Hasten).

The reason I ask is because of the way PPM procs work (and all procs are going to work in the future). I'm trying to find which power would maximize my chances.

Greedy little min-maxer that I am.

For your build, I would put half of it into Dragon's Tail, with the other half of the power being slotted with Eradication.

It doesn't really matter where you put the other half of the set, but I would slot the rest of whichever power you choose with Smashing Haymaker ( or whichever set it is that gives you 1.25% E/N defense for 3 of them.) If you haven't discovered it on your own: You MUST put the set into one of your primary powers, pool powers won't take them. (Secondary powers will work too if they deal damage, but that's not relevant to your case here)

You can then move a set of Kinetic Combat to Boxing if you can scrounge up 3 spare slots. That's what I did with my main and I managed to soft-cap S/L on a Claws/Regen scrapper, while not giving up my perma-DP and ~750% passive regen.

I would also consider slotting Spiritual Alpha instead as well. The extra recharge will help your attack chain, and the healing will help ALL of your regeneration/Max HP powers.

(I think I can improve your second build a little bit, I'll play around with it tonight and see if I can)

Like I mentioned earlier, I don't believe the Scrapper proc will be impacted by the PPM mechanic. I would just slot it where the recharge bonus will help the most, in a power that can spare the slot the most.

As far as relying on Hasten, I can't imagine how you would need to personally. That's one of the beauties of MA/WP. WP gets absolutely no benefit from hasten, and MA doesn't have any key attacks on a long recharge.

If I was soloing pylons for bragging rights as the focus of my heroic career, I could see it helping. As it is, I can run a continuous attack chain with Storm Kick, Cobra Strike, and Thunder Kick now in nearly every conventional game setting with only the occasional need to plug in a fourth filler attack if I am working on a particularly hard target. Much more often than not, this need is irrelevant anyway since I'm using Dragon's Tail on the minions.

Seriously, unless you really just love the varied animations, there is definitely skippable attacks in MA with only minimal global recharge bonuses. Thunder Kick is a strong first on this list, with Crane a close second. I could easily run my MA with no Hasten, no Thunder Kick, no Crane Kick, no Eagles Claw, and only modest global recharge bonuses and never be waiting for an attack to recharge.

Granted, it is stylistically a bit more stale, but I was surprised how quickly I found i didn't miss the varied animations, and in the case of Thunder Kick, I was really surprised how obvious the DPS improvement was once I respecced out of it.

Okay, here's what I did:

Put 3 Superior Scrapper's Strike in Dragon's Tail and Crippling Axe Kick. I left the Eradications in Dragon's Tail and put 3 Pounding Slugfest in CAK.

Swapped a couple of the Reactive Armors with Aegis.

Put a Kismet +Acc in Combat Jumping.

Put 5 Hecatombs in Thunder Kick (The Kinetic Combat that was in there is now unnecessary)

Turned Accolades on and swapped the Alpha slot with Spiritual.

End result:
Your recharge is the same, accuracy is better.

S/L/E/N are now all soft-capped, and F/C is at 41.9%.

You have 2265 Max HP. Swapping to Spiritual also bumped up your Regen to 695% with one in range of RttC.

I did a few other things, which I'm sure you'll notice.

I don't think I can get it much better than I did here. Annoyed that I couldn't soft-cap Fire and Cold as well, but it's damn close. The only thing you lost that I can see is about 2% resistance to S/L.

Oh, and your recovery is now at 5.15 from 4.12 (+End from accolades I think, because I didn't do anything special with it)

Here's the build:

Gotta give you props, man. Your build was damn solid before. I didn't have to do much at all to it.

It was mostly tweaks here and there, I didn't change a single power, and only had to move 1 slot. (From Tough to Heightened Senses)

The nice thing is, every time I tweak someone else's build, I learn new things I can use on my own. I'm going to take some of what you did with yours and apply it to my Electric/WP brute.

Well, the talk about soloing pylons lit a fire under my ***. I just completed my first solo. Took a bit. But I did it. And yeah, the T1 attack can probably go away with the set muled into Boxing.

Cool. Glad that my little experiment in "How to burn lots of Inf FAST" wound up being educational for someone else besides me.

If one were to drop thunder kick for focus chi, you could slot two Reticles and a recharge in focus Chi, shift the Steadfast to Tough, and 6 slot Mind Over Body with 3 Reactive and 3 Aegis for 44.8% F/C defense, but honestly one would rarely if ever notice the difference.

You'd lose 5-10% recharge that way too, but that build is never going to be hurting for a top shelf attack, even when hasten is down.

I didn't change the slotting.

I turned accolades on, and switched the Alpha from Nerve to Agility. That's where the extra end recovery came from.

And thanks.

I didn't see the point to chasing it much farther than I did. Pretty much every Cold attack you'll encounter regularly is paired with Smashing or Lethal, and a good chunk of the Fire attacks do as well. I was mostly thinking about things like CoT demons that like to throw lots of fire at you.

Oh, I almost forgot.

I also boosted all the enhancements in the build to +5s, if you didn't notice. That's why some of the numbers are inflated a bit.

My build made the Kinetic Combats unneeded.

I put Hecatomb in there, which you could simply move to whichever attack you use the most if you want to mule 4 Kin Combats into Boxing instead.

If you do that, I'd move the extra slot you'll end up with into Weave.

Oops, 2 slots freed up. My bad.

If you drop Thunder Kick, pick up Assault. You can definitely afford to run it with the ridiculous amount of recovery you have. Or maybe pick up Resurgence and put 3 Numina's in it for more regen/HP.

Okay here's a stab at a possible rebuild.
Minimally invasive. The Alpha isn't created yet, but I can fix that pretty fast.
The thing that REALLY hurts soloing the Incarnate content are the massive defense debuffs flying around. A group of Sorrows bosses look at 17% DDR, laugh, and then bust me down to "Even if it was standing still on the other side of the universe you've been hit by it."

Granted, I probably shouldn't run at x8 if I don't want to take those chances....

Yeah. Need to work on my accolades.

But I want my Incarnate stuff too.

And want to play my other incarnates.

And some of my lowbies.

And maybe sleep once in a while...

And eat on occasion.

Crap, I need to either clone myself or find out a practical method of time travel DAMMIT!

On the flip side. Did a bit more thinking about my slotting for Spring Attack. I've got it slotted well for a damage aura for a more frequent AoE like Dragon's Tail. But, since it's a VERY long recharge AoE, I really don't give a damn about End consumption on it. It's a tiny drop in the bucket in the long haul.

On that last build you posted, you can go only three deep on the Reactive Armor sets and still be at S/L softcap. The extra slot in High Pain tolerance I would go with another Numina, but the extra one in Mind over Body could go anywhere. Another Numina in fast healing would net you 17% regen + the HP bonus. Total loss on the S/L resist would be less than 1%.

Energy defense starts to suffer then. And I'd like to be able to run the TFs without going "ZAP!-splat" lots.

Negative ghost rider.

Just drop the Reactive triples and the only set bonuses you lose are the 1.25% S/L, times two is 2.5%, which subtracted from the build you posted leaves 45.1% S/L defense.

Total loss: 2.5% S/L defense and 0.7% S/L resistance (net S/L defense 45.1%).

Total gain if you slot the third numina in HPT and FH: 17% regen and 6% hit points (3.69 hp/sec total regen).

There might be better places to put them, that's just an example.
