Thugs/Traps overhaul

I haven't played this character in a very long time, and he is level 40 at the moment, but would love some input on build ideas WITHOUT purples, but with an ATO set.

Obviously recharge and defense are the keys to this combo but I have never taken any MM to 50 yet, out of my 21 level 50 characters, so this is something I want to work on.

Does anyone have a Mids build of their characters? I can only imagine Thugs/Traps being pretty popular so I hope to see some suggestions.

Where do you put the ATO? What is the general consensus on that?

EDIT: also, I notice the 2nd training power actually grants the first training power also - do you respec out of the first training power then? etc. I've been away a long time.
It doesn't actually meet your requests but I've posted my Thugs/Traps build below. Hope it gives you some inspiration.

Rebirth is of somewhat limited use for pets because they frequently get oneshot when they get hit at all in high level content. I personally prefer Barrier because when I know that a damage spike is coming I can pop it to basically mitigate it entirely, keeping my pets alive.

Excellent - although where did you put your last 3 slots - this is a level 49 build..?

Enforcers are probably the first time I would consider HO enhancements - they have too much stuff to buff. Do they run out of endurance? They seem to on mine - he is 43 now.

Sorry, I had the wrong save file there, that was a WIP save that I never deleted. This should be the one she's actually using.

The panacea proc helps a bit with their endurance, but they will run out if you're solo after a very long fight - when soloing I usually don't have a problem with switching to Ageless though. In a team or especially a league, you can keep a defensive Destiny pick and generally rely on buffs to keep them running. You could potentially slot them with Cytoskeletons instead of Def IOs if you don't mind losing a bit of defense.

Yeah I could see sacrificing one of the HOs for a dam/end IO even if I lose a little damage - they are overslotted for acc anyway.

Actually, throwing an Enzyme in there to replace the defense IO would prob work too.

EDIT: I assume you gathered all that defense so you could toe bomb with SS + Stealth?

Either way would work, depending on which thing you care about losing less. Pets do tend to be swimming in accuracy and tohit unless you're doing +4 content outside of incarnate areas, where your minions and lieutenants don't get level-shifted to even-con with you.

My trappers tend to live in melee; toe-bombing with stealth is a big part of that, yes. I also like to be able to hang close to keep my FFG on my pets, drop poison traps, drop acid mortars where they're closest to what I want them to be shooting at, et cetera. Caltrops has a short range too.

I actually wanted to get her Incarnate soft-capped to S/L/E but couldn't find a way to make it without sacking more recharge than I was comfortable with, but the extra is a nice buffer against cascade failure and a small purple will cap her when necessary in Trials.

Well I got him to 47 and spent about an hour and a half stealing money from other toons to buy stuff.

I went a little different route but now that I have looked at it, I may respec one more time, convert him to villain, and work on the Mace epic, for Web Envelope and Scorpion Shield. Due to the constant burn patches from Thugs, mobs run all over the place and it is kind of a pain to constantly spam Web Grenade on every enemy.

I also am at the mercy of the market at the moment - there are some recipes that the market is completely out of right now.

I am already at the normal softcap - I have the ice epic for now with the shield (this is what I am thinking I should respec out of for Web/Scorp.) I need more slots to do what I want to. I don't think incarnate softcap is going to be realistic for me either - the only problem I can imagine having is during lambda crate runs. How do you hold up there?

Also, does gang war benefit from interface damage procs?

Noticed Luck of the Gamblers were on sale starting today too.

Honestly, I tend to just play my Masterminds as support units in the temp zerg in Lambda; it's either that or solo my way through a glowy or two on the ones that have the durability and sustainability to survive solo in Trials. Pets just don't hold up well when you try to speed through content and ignore large groups.

Yeah I am level 53 now, I went with Spectral and haven't converted to villain yet to respec into Scorpion.

Let's see, I went with Agility to get +rech and +def - I assume the end mod helps the pets too, but if left on dummies they still empty out after a bit.

Went with Spectral for exotic damage and possible immobilization for burn patches.

Went with Barrier.

Went with Drones - thematic, aoe, added defense from the buffer drone, etc

Tier 3 so far in all of it.

OH - Seeker Drones do not proc anything, according to Arbiter Hawk. That's bugged. No procs work with Seekers, not Interface, not enhancement procs.

I don't think pets have any +recovery powers for an Endurance Modification to enhance, but you should be able to tell if they're receiving a benefit from it by mousing over the power and looking for that enhancement type on the Enhancement Manager in-game.

Yeah I am at tier 3, it isn't noticeable, but I figure why not - Spectral does the same damage as Preemptive and Reactive (without the -res of course.)

You might be right about end mods - but does SB make pets have unlimited end? If so, then it should be enhanceable. It would kinda suck if pets can only have end reduction enhanceable. I mostly wanted it for recharge and defense.

Assuming you mean Speed Boost, the Kinetics buff, yes, that will basically give your pets infinite endurance, much as it will a player. The enhancement for that end. mod value comes from the caster, though, not the target, so your alpha choice won't affect that.

Hmm, that's unfortunate, but again, makes zero diff since Agility gives recharge and defense, which I would think is the main goals a bot/traps or a thugs/traps should shoot for over everything else.

EDIT: actually, without the respec into Scorp shield, you can see me run around a little with my character here, although this is also before I hit 53 as I was discussing initial thoughts on the two versions of Hybrid and waiting for an iTrial queue.

Ok here is what I managed on Live. Many of the items were due to what was available on the market at the time or due to the amount of money I had at the time. If I do make the 8+ day journey to villainside and back to grab Web Envelope and Scorpion Shield, where do I grab slots from - Caltrops and Web Grenade and perhaps Scorp shield could be 5 slotted while keeping the LOTG in one of those 5 - maybe that's what I should do.

What do you think?

Now that looks pretty good, all the way around. Is there anything you would do different if you had this combo, and avoided purples? I mean, you can change the whole thing if you want.

Also, wouldn't you build a bots/traps the same way or no?

Trip mine doesn't really get use in my situation, as I don't want SS for toe-bombing and I hadn't realized until too late that you can't put interrupt in it. That seems like an obvious omission to me, by the way. Does Power Boost transfer to traps pets?

Trip Mine isn't very useful without slotting. Replaced with Web Cocoon.

If you decided later to invest into a couple choice expensive enhancements, I'd replace the Blood Mandate A/D in Bruiser with the Soulbound CFBU and move one of the Recharge from Gang War into Triage Beacon and replace it with a Panacea proc.

You could also move a Recharge into Web Cocoon and replace it with the Lockdown PPM proc (which will be all procs soon) for a very high chance of mag 5 hold (which I personally would do, I don't use Gang War often enough to notice 10-20 seconds shaved off the recharge time with a high global recharge build).

The most important of the changes here is that I would never, ever skip the Pet Resist/Defense IOs. They just make too big a difference in pet survival. The radii on these auras is actually 40 feet, not 20, which is much more reliable than counting on your pets to stay in the FFG. They're also +5% BASE defense and +10% Res(All), despite what the descriptions say.

Roughly, but Bots/Traps needs less personal defense because of the Protector Bot shield, which leaves more room for Recharge bonuses and procs.

I'd really make a point of getting the Achilles proc into Acid Mortar, considering how good it is at applying it. That's all I really see that stands out to me - granted I'm going on my fourth day of alternating all-nighters at this point (finals suck).

Single Target Radius = 0. AoE Non-Cone Arc = 360.

There haven't been any on the market in quite awhile.

As it stands, there is an 80% chance Acid Mortar will do 70 damage... and a 20% chance of doing 280 damage on the other end of the spectrum, 10 times in a row, plus the DoT, plus Spectral DoT, ignoring the 3 procs in Poison Trap.

It's pretty delicious.

EDIT: oh, didn't realize the purple procs do more than 70 damage, so it's even higher than that
