Community parts pack?

I had a thought, that since I know there are many artistically gifted community members, and there are a lot of great ideas floating about for costume parts, and I thought, "Why not let people make their own costume parts? Granted, there would be restrictions such as minimum and maximum resolutions and poly counts, but I'm sure people could come up with some great stuff, and Paragon Studios could definitely profit from it, so what do you guys think?

If Masterminds didn't suck, they'd be the most powerful AT in the game.

On the surface it's a great idea. I might finally get that Mandarin hat that wasn't in the Imperial Dynasty pack (grr!) You know, the one I've been asking for for over 5 years now!

The devs would either have to release tools or clearly state what format the want parts in, and give serious guidelines to wanna be submitters, such as file format (Rhino, Maya, what?) how big/small items would have to be for Male, Female, Huge body types, etc, etc.

Then there is the nightmare of clipping........

I think we can safely say no user submitted capes or possibly auras.

Check out the Repeat Offenders network of SGs! You'll be glad you did.

Damn. Here I was hoping that you were suggesting a set with Zwillinger's hat and Beastyle's hair and stuff like that.

It's a neat idea, but since they'd still have to do QA and touch up or adjust pieces, as well as simply sort through all the submissions, I'm not sure it would really save them any effort in the long run.

There's no argument that the Devs would probably need at least one dedicated full-time staff person whose sole responsibility would be to accept player submissions and analyze them for possible inclusion into the game.

On the other hand there was, at least in the early years of the game, a fairly active community of modders that created a large number of costume mods. Admittedly most of those underground mods were either attempts to create things like Superman chest logos or nude female piece-parts.

Still I think if the Devs formalized a submission process and made it clear that any submission would be fully owned by Paragon Studios then they would probably motivate the community to produce and submit viable costume item candidates that they could eventually sell in the Paragon Market. Seems like the Devs could eventually make enough money from it to make it worthwhile.

Yeah...eventually. This might not ever happen, but it could be pretty fun!

Interesting thing: I PM'd Zwill about whether any thing like this was planned, and he said:

I do certainly like the idea of a "Steam Workshop" style costume set though, and will be certain to pass the suggestion along.

Perhaps this may not be so far away?

I'm not so sure I would read -too- much into what Zwill said.

I get the feeling that the Devs of this game would have no problem with allowing us to submit costume items for review assuming they could just magically snap their fingers to make it happen. But in real life there are various problems and costs that would have to be overcome, and I suspect that the Devs have decided that, at least at the present time, it would be more trouble for them than it'd be worth.

I think this would be something the Devs would love to offer us. But like so many things it'll probably never get prioritized highly enough to ever get past the "would be nice to have" stage. This is why Zwill diplomatically answered your question with a non-committal semi-neutral answer.
