Player Summit: Is anyone staying longer?

So since I'll be flying in from Atlanta, and I LOVE California--especially the bay area--I was wondering, is anyone coming in from out of town and will be staying longer than just Friday to Sunday? I'm considering either staying from April 23 (Monday) through April 29 (Sunday), or from April 27 (Friday) through May 3 (Thursday) or 4 (Friday).

I'm asking because if anyone is going to be there longer, and I'll be by myself, I was wondering if anyone might want to hang out and do some touristy type stuff. We wouldn't have to be together 24x7 or anything, but maybe pop up to San Francisco a couple of days, do dinner a couple of nights, that kind of thing.

I'm heading back Sunday evening on a late flight, but if you do decide to stay extra time, you may want to contact Red_Gren about dining recommendations.

He's organized the Justice dinner's for the HeroCon's, the last Bay Area M&G (in San Francisco) and the Player Summit. He's been a bit limited in the selections at times by me, but he's organized some great meals and had excellent recommendations. Even the Korean BBQ meal that I didn't attend was well received by everyone that I talked to afterward.

Being local, he knows the area fairly well and has connections for finding some really good dining locations.

EDIT: If you do decide to make the run up to San Francisco, I'd recommend stopping at Pier 39 for some sight-seeing. There is a little shop there that sells the most fabulous mini-donuts coated with either sugar or with cinnamon and sugar. I think the place is called Trish's Mini Donuts. Get a Bucket O'Donuts. You won't be disappointed, especially if you catch them like Red_Gren and I did getting them freshly made (waited for them to finish as we watched).

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

Great advice!

Hmm... Well, if no one else is staying a few days extra, I can do touristy stuff on my own, but I figure I might as well ask, any locals want to do anything? (Keeping in mind that I'm a pretty stereotypical geek, so by "anything," I'm referring to normal- to geeky- type stuff. Not much for the club scene, for example.)

Last time I was there, I did want to go up Coit Tower and walk down Lombard street and some of the stairs around there, but never got a chance to, and to go out to Alcatraz and take the tour. I did do a bay tour (which was AWESOME), but I didn't actually go to the island itself. I did make it out to Pier 39. I didn't have the mini-doughnuts, but I think I remember seeing the place you're talking about. I did have some hella tasty clam chowder in a bread bowl and bought a San Francisco 49ers shirt. (Which REALLY pissed off some of my Saints fan buddies when I wore it the day SF beat Atlanta's division rivals New Orleans in the playoffs back in January, but I digress...) I think there's a tour of Giants stadium offered, but I don't know if they'll be doing tours the week I'm there. I'm just a little tempted (about this much: ->||<-) to stay through May 4 and take the tour of the Stanford Linear Accelerator.

At some point, I need to also pop back out to the Apple store. It's supposedly the only place you can buy licensed Apple merchandise like t-shirts, hats, etc. I accidentally left some people off my list in getting souvenirs last time I was there.

Anyway, like I said, I'm thinking of making a vacation of it. If anybody else wants to do stuff, let me know. There are also some interesting things around Palo Alto and Mountain View that I saw and did. I would highly recommend doing the tour of the Computer History Museum if you have time. Also, some people might be a little bored by it, but going out to NASA Ames Discovery Center and seeing the moon rock was cool.

Wish I could man. Wish I could.

But:

  • This "extra" trip this year was already a budget stretch.
  • My bosses need me back Monday morning and NOT late and NOT brain-fried.
  • I'm relying on family to pick me up from the airport because parking, even only for 2 days at O'Hare is "Are you *PANCAKE* KIDDING ME?" expensive. I could afford a limo on that!

No worries, man. I'm just making up for around 15 years of no vacations.

Little hint for anyone else traveling from out of town, though. Airport parking is really expensive. If you're going to be gone for more than two days or so, unless you're traveling from a long way away from the airport, it's almost always more cost efficient to take a taxi instead. Also, if you live in a city that has a decent public transit system, that's almost always a very inexpensive and viable option. (Here in Atlanta, MARTA goes right to the airport.)

In fact, I probably won't rent a car in California. Last time I was there, I was really lucky and Texas Justice and Ninus schlepped me around. Aside from having a ride and good conversation, I got to go to some neat places I otherwise wouldn't have. Time before that, I took public transit everywhere. Those Caltrain trains are nice, and a VTA day pass is dirt cheap. If I really need a car to go somewhere, I'll just call a taxi. Paying $10 or $20 each for three or four trips is a lot better methinks than paying $150 - $200 for a car that I won't drive that much (and dealing with traffic).
