My first proper attempt at a Stone tank build. Advice needed ^^

Heya'll,

Doing the DA arcs prompted me to try and finally make a proper crack at designing a Stone tank. I've decided on pairing it with TW, for the concept I have in mind. I've already built it up in Mids (posted below), but as this is my first attempt at making a tank, I need advice on it.

I.e - Where are it's weaknesses? What have I missed? Where will my solo ceiling be (0x8, 1x8, 2x8 etc)? Do you think I'd be able to take on major AVs such as Recluse, Reichsmann, Honoree etc.?

Any advice people can give will be welcome.

Regards,

Sophia.

Your best bet would be to actually put this up in the Tanker forum.
In the meantime, WAY overslotted on most of your armors and way underslotted on your attacks.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

I gave it my token 5 mins. I didn't look at your choice of incarnates I just turned them on when doing the slot moves.

Cardinal sin missing Mudpots, I took out Crushing Blow to put Mudpots in.

I think its a start in the right direction. You could object to one power over another and seek further changes by all means.

Many thanks to both of you ^_^.

I'll load up your build in Mids, New Dawn and will have a look.

Thanks again .

Your key consideration as a Stoney is are you going to bother using anything that isn't granite?

If not (And I don't) then you can save quite a few slots in your other armors, and I would use that to try and push your defence as close to 59% as you can, definately over 45% (You are 44.5% to all at the moment).

This also lets you drop combat jumping, which doesn't work in granite, so frees up a power pick too. I would take Titan Sweep in it's place.

If you are picking the stay in granite route then I would also suggest forking out for the Glad Armor 3% def IO, if you are having 2 full purple sets in this build plus all the uniques I am guessing the cost isn't 'that' much of an issue?

Note: All these notes are based on New Dawn's build.

Note 2: The other route you could take, is to build for 45% defence to all and then try and plug the Psi hole.

I guess my main query would be - is it worth using anything other than Granite once you hit 50? If not, then for my primary build I would focus on Granite then. I do want to be able to exemp this char though should I decide to run arcs/TFs etc that are below the Granite level. But I guess that is what a second build is for.

As for purps - this is what you would call a "dream" build, so the Armageddon and Hecatomb would be replaced by other sets in reality. So far, the most expensive build I've been able to afford/achieve is one around the 4bill mark, which is my Psi/Psi Domi. And that is excluding the damage purps in her "dream" build, which would thrust the cost into the 15bill range (in total).

Much of what I see Granite tanks tank could of been done outside of Granite. They are contributing to a team better outside. Then there is exemplaring, sure a second build would do, but I go back to my first sentence. Then there is versus Psi. Minerals is the quickest way to build Psi defense, and sometimes you might want Rock Armour or someother with that. Some people will argue that they need to be in Granite with Psi defense or resists even. You can either experiment for yourself or just run Granite. Experimenting is too tempting to me.

Some people farm certain missions at certain settings to achieve Purps. I have heard of people getting 3 in one day, hell I have heard of people on Freedom passing them out like one penny sweets. Farmers, they have too much gold.

Personally I think that Stone tanks outside of Granite are too squishy to be proper tanks without outside buffs or building for non-Granite survivability. That however means that you could drop Granite and contribute more damage when on a team that isn't really in need of a tank, but if that were me I would play another character until a tank was needed (Or risk feeling like a weak scrapper).

As for exemping I would make a decision on which way you want to go, you can get a very survivable tank with exemping capabilities by taking all the armors, or a next to unkillable endgame tank by just taking Granite, but that would mean using the 2nd build for exemping. The difference in survivability will be almost un-noticed for 99% of the game, so it is a personal choice.

TFs and such you can't say suddenly "I'll switch to my Tanker" because it suits you. Additionally no one needs a Tanker really anywhere but what Tankers can do best is bring large clusters of mobs tightly together so that a teams AoEs can capitalize on them be they damage or debuff so that the team is more efficient with less risk.

He will honor his words; he will definitely carry out his actions. What he promises he will fulfill. He does not boast about his ability, or shamelessly extol his own virtues. - Sima Qian.
