Character List changes not sticking.

Having an issue, albeit a minor one. I tend to sort my character list by level most of the time, in descending order. Lately, when I log back into the game, the order has reverted. This seems to be install based as it happens across all my accounts. Anyone have a quick fix?

Thanks!

Primaries: Doctor Roboto - 50(+3) MM (BOT/FF/MU)
Johnny Liberty - 50(+3) Tank (EM/INV/EM)
Lvl 50 Archetypes: MM, TNK, BRT, SCR, PB, CNT, DOM
Still working on: NONE! NCSoft won't let me. =(

Your playerslot.txt file is either locked, set as Read-Only, or corrupted.

Go into your game installation folder. Open the folder named the same as your account username. In this folder is a file called playerslot.txt that holds the order of the characters. Right-click the file and select Properties. At the bottom of the Properties window, look to see if there is a checkmark in Read-Only. If it's there, then it's set to Read-Only and your changes won't save. If it's not, then the file is either locked or corrupted and I'd err on the side of caution and say it's corrupted.

You can either set the attributes on the file to not be Read-Only (if that is what is causing it), or you can delete the file (a better scenario in case it's corrupted), log into the game, rearrange your characters as you want them, log in to one of the characters and then log out to the Desktop.

That should rewrite the file. If you want, you can set it as Read-Only at this point to keep it from jumbling. Just follow the steps I gave you to open the Properties page and put a check in Read-Only.

You'll need to follow these steps for each account. Just look for the folder in the installation directory that is named for the account.

Be aware that if you create a new character it won't be saved to the list and will get added to the end and rearranging it won't save the order. You'd have to change the attribute again, log in and arrange the characters, then log out for it to re-write the file with the new characters added.

EDIT: I see this occasionally when people are transferring files from one computer installation to another. The files they copy from the CD or DVD get set to Read-Only when they put them on the new computer.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

It could also happen if he has said no to the UAC elevation prompt as the default install location is in the Program Files folder which is a protected location.
Assuming he said yes when installing and then no when running the install would be made to the program files folder and the file in there would be read by the game but when saving it Windows would write to a cached copy which would then mean those updates would never be seen.

Good to know. That was something I've not been aware of for a few reasons.

I don't install games to the default location.

I pay attention to the wording of any prompts that come up and answer accordingly. If it's something I'm not sure of, I Google it before continuing.

This can also happen if you change up your capital letter usage in your login

For instance (pulling this outta thin air) Perfect Hero vs. perfect hero
Each will set up it's own file.

So, if you change up your list under one version (caps), then switch to the other version (no caps), the lists will be different.

All you would need to do is delete the one you don't want, and be consistent with your login. =)
