Having issues with high ping and rubberbanding.

Posted

I have come back to CoH after 3 years of being out. I used to play wired directly to my router but now I am a room away and playing wireless. I started a month ago and I have high ping issues. I run right around 150 to 170. I have run netgraph and kept an eye on things and no matter when I play I still have the same problems.

I am using a Linksys E2000 router with the current firmware and set on channel 11. No other routers in my building are on this channel btw. My wireless card is a linksys WMP600N with the most current Ralink drivers. I have played around with settings to no avail on both the router and wireless card. Nothing seems to work as my ping stays the same no matter what. The only strange thing while checking the netgraph is I get single red spikes every minute or so and then it goes back to the good "green grass" look. I am just curious if anyone has any tips or tricks to try to get my ping a little lower.

This is my pathping log... I am losing packets along the way and I am not sure why. I have nothing else running besides CoH and Kaspersky AV.

How many ports does your router have on the back?

Have you tried changing Ethernet cables or swapping the one you have to another port?

Also, have you power-cycled your network yet?

  1. Shut EVERYTHING off and unplug the devices.
  2. Wait 5-10 minutes.
  3. Power up the cable/DSL modem and give it a couple minutes.
  4. Power up the router and give it a couple minutes.
  5. Power up your computer and try playing.

Okay, between your computer and router you're getting 17% packet loss.
That's bad.

0% or 100% are usually fine (100% on a ping test means the device is set to ignore/drop ping packets).

Between your router and your gateway (Cable/DSL modem) you're getting an equivalent 17% packet loss.

This could just be fails brought about by the router. Or it could be something bad at the gateway.

Your first hop out to your ISP (host-9-24-220-24-static.midco.net) is showing 20% packet loss.

The next hop to (host-33-13-220-24-static.midco.net) is showing 14% packet loss

Then a bunch of random 1% and 2%. scattered throughout. Your ping times are quite low though.

Basically once you hop from Level3 in Denver to Level3 in Dallas, your packet loss goes away.

This is likely a compound problem causing this.

You could be having problems with the router.
You could be having problems with the gateway device.

Your ISP's head-end for your connection is misbehaving, but this COULD be due to bad behavior on the part of your router/gateway device.
And the next hop along is problematic too, leading me to think that the ISP is having some issues with those nodes. Possibly they're overloaded or screaming for a reboot.

Like I said, try rebooting your network and see if that helps alleviate anything. If your pathpings are still that bad, especially once you get onto Midco's network, contact them and ask them to check your connection from their end and give them those two hostnames.

What your setup looks like is someone reselling internet access (S1Systems reselling Midco cable connections).

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

It could also be a Windows Problem with the Wireless Lan....

Vista and Win 7 having a thing called something like "Wireless Optimation Service" that constantly keeps optimizing Wireless Connection... which could cause problems with Online Gaming, I've read that in a Computer Magazine a while back so i dont remember all details.

The magazines suggestion was just to disable that service to solve it after the initial Connection is established.

Also try at least temporary to use a cable connection to see if it fixes it.

Greetings

Thank you for the quick replies. I went ahead and shut my PC down. Unplugged my router and my modem and waited 5 minutes and ran it again. Shows really no difference.

Does it appear my wireless router is giving me the problems?? I hope it isn't because its a fairly new router (I know that doesn't mean anything just pisses me off). I don't have a new router I can swap out to test it but I can buy a new one and see if that alleviates my problems if need be.

Obviously Linksys' firmware is absolute garbage. My ping is still around 150 but no packet loss so the lag I have is pretty minimal. I am going to run with this for awhile and see how it fares. So far so good though. Thanks for the help.

Yeah. It looks like your router hated the latest firmware update.
Test out the game client today/tonight and see how your connection fares.
If no rubber-banding, you're probably good.

Gotta love open source.
