Couple questions about Dark Blast & Traps
I have a Dark/Cold with 43% S/L/E Def, so it is a similar playstyle to what you intend, I'd wager. Nightfall is delicious, those DoT Ticks add up when you chain TT and NF. Just the caveat being since NF is narrower and wider than TT, you'll miss some of those you immob unless you step back. I solved this by not caring about the one and two on the sides. ^_^
Pro'ly easiest would be to shoot for just Ranged/AoE or S/L/E(/N). Those delicious cones work best from a distance, so I'd avoid going for M/R/A.

Dark Blast is decent as far as damage goes, but not exceptional. It lacks a hard-hitting tier 3 for single-target, although the recent bump to Life Drain helps in that regard. Gloom gets a little bonus damage for being pure DoT, so it hits a bit harder than your usual tier 2 attack.
For AoEs DB is all about the cones. I'd never skip Night Fall. It does have a narrow cone, but it does more damage than TT. As was already said, you can choose to reposition between TT and NF, or just accept that NF will miss some on the sides. What I do is try to slot TT with as much +range as I can without sacrificing other things (which sometimes means I don't get a lot). That way you minimize the difference between the ranges. NF will still be narrower but you won't have to reposition as much and it will be easier to fight from further back allowing both cones to hit most of the group.
I wouldn't plan on using Trip Mine during fights much. Sure you can do it, but if you build for recharge you could probably spam both cones multiple times in the time it took you to set one mine. Still it's fun and sometimes I do it for that reason alone. Mostly though I set them up to cover possible ambush points and that sort of thing. For example on the last mission of the ITF I know there will be waves of reinforcements while the team is fighting Rommy. So I set up some mines (if the Nicti aren't constantly interrupting me) and Caltrops to greet them when they arrive. Good times.
For defense, the usual approach for a trapper is to get the Scorpion Shield. With that you can fairly easily softcap S/L/E, the three most common damage types in the game. If you prefer positionals you can do that instead, but it will require a more focused build.
One great synergy I love about the combo is the immobilize in TT. If you haven't noticed it yet, I'm sure you will that mobs run like crazy from the Acid Mortar. Caltrops helps but it just slows them, then they still scatter to the far reaches of the map you're on, catch a bus to the next city, then transfer to a train and keep right on going. Eventually they return but one shot from the AM and they run screaming like little girls all over again. The immobilize is so great there. I still have horrible memories of trying to fight war wolves on my trapper. I finally had to give up using my traps and just apply damage.
My usual formula for starting a fight is to summon Seeker Drones in the middle of a group of mobs to debuff them and soak the alpha. While they're distracted I jump in and start laying down traps. I don't tend to use PGT except for AVs or GMs these days. Since it was nerfed it's not good for much aside from the -regen (IMO). So for regular mobs it's just the Acid Mortar and possibly Caltrops depending on the situation, and they I start applying damage.
Wow, great info here. Realized I won't need Dark Pit since I have Seekers to soak alpha so I can pick up Night Fall. Also I'm going for a concept build so I'd like to keep the /Dark Epic. Soul Drain/Dark Consumption seem to good to pass up anyway. After talking to a couple people I'll probably be going Defender, much easier to softcap S/L/E with not to much of a damage hit solo, and better debuff numbers.

The Only Token Black Guy
This is one of the most solid Traps/Dark builds out there that I've seen (not my build). (And yes it's a Defender). Capped defenses to everything but Psi (including both Positional and Typed defenses) which sits at 39.2 >>> slot one of the ranged attacks (Dark Blast perhaps) with 6 Apocalypse (swapping the two out of Life Drain for their equivalents in another ranged set) and that'll bump Psi defense to 44.2 if you really feel 39.2 isn't enough.
EDIT: Elusive Mind appears to be toggled on in the copy I provided as is Force of Nature. Toggle those two off for a better picture overall.

I mean it's up for debate. If I could find a build that was S/L/E softcapped & didn't break the bank for a Cor, I'd be happy to stay with it & not reroll.

Wow..that easy lol. Might be able to bypass the /Dark APP for /Mace then. Will I miss Soul Drain & Dark Consumption?

However, now, I've specc'd into the 45% (currently only 43, need the Glad Armor) S/L/E path, with an eye towards Incarnates. Mace made things MUCH easier, and I still have Web 'Nade for a hold... Plus my Cleric now has a Mace to look bad *** with. (Concept is a Favored Soul/Cleric of Levistus from D&D)
I stay comfortably at range, don't sweat if most things come to Melee me, but generally they're getting molested, with a helping of Sleet and Nightfall, while I stand back and chuckle with glee. Managed to solo all of the SSA's so far on x2 (bigger HL mobs), and main real difficulty I had was Cheaty-face Manticore with auto-hit/high acc/non-targetted debuffs, and the Grav/Kin Troller hero. The Rulu-Shin EB is just an exercise in position and patience.

The Only Token Black Guy
How's this? Something I just threw together, seems solid to me.
The Lady Grey proc in Mortar is supposed to be an Achilles. |
-Two Travel powers? If it floats your boat, run with it, but it does feel overkill. Best would pro'ly be SS alone, since that +Stealth IO in Sprint is full invis. I generally design for none, though, since I've found Sprint+Ninja Run and the 257 temp teleport powers I'm pretty fast.
-Triage Beacon - I've heard it's situation, don't have a Traps high enough to pass judgement on it though. however, soloing, you should be getting by fine on Siphon Life.
-KB IO's. About 95% of KB is blocked by one, the remaining 4% is Mag 10, so you'll need 3. No point to only having 2. I'd either find room for a 3rd, or drop to only 1. I hear Winter's Gift Slow Resist is damn tasty. (that final 1% is > Mag 12, so best generally to just suck up the kip up if it lands through your defenses)
-Dark Blast: Swap Decimation A/E/R for the Proc, not much of loss, and tasty gain.
-Tenebrous Tentacles: Swap D/Rech for the Proc
-Acid Mortar: Swap Shield Breaker's Debuff/E/R for Achilles' Debuff/R. You lose the 2.5% mez resistance (not protection, so about as helpful as pissing on wildfires), and gain 2.5% Damage buff.
-LotG+Rech, I like those as low as possible (generally 25) to keep the 7.5% when exemping, but then I refuse to buy them from the market. Preference there.
-Lockdown Proc, same story. Lower level means greater use, but also more expensive (usually) from the market.
-Tough: I'd not buy into Fighting if it's just a Set Mule for only the Steadfast. Look into dropping Fighting and grabbing Leadership.
-Life Drain: Interesting slotting, but I dislike Doctored Wounds (one good bonus and at 5 slots? blech.), especially if it's only getting 3 slotted. Go for Numi's or Miracle, better bonuses.
-Triage Beacon: Same Gig here, I'd 4 slot it with a H/R and a H/E/R from both Numi and Miracle, and if really needed, 5th slot with a 3rd from either to bring up values.
-Trip Mine: Overslotted, you don't need the 5th bonus for Melee Def, I'd be tempted to either swap slotting completely (only decent bonus is again 4th Tier), or Drop the Tri or Quad.
-Focused Accuracy: Also, overslotted for Rech and ToHit, I'd lean towards 2 from Adj Target Buff/End and End/Rech, with a Buff/End Hami to finish it out. Maybe 4th slot for Gaussian's Proc.
-Summon Disruptor: I prefer 2-4 slotting pet sets, since there are some decent Frankenslot bonuses, and the two Rech intensive sets don't cap Damage.
Well, that was detailed... Also, here's what I gen'ed up to help make for better comparison/get ideas. Notable difference are no Travels, no Triage, and no Pet. Not saying you should do this build, since that's 3 pretty big powers you took that I dropped, but it could give some other thoughts. Also, Life Drain and Trip Mine have alternate slotting if you wanna go in the Expensive Purples.

I am the 99%. Occupy the World.
Minister of Infinity's Secret Police, Official Mooch of dUmb and League, Official Purveyor of Free Straws, the Most Interesting Man in the World.
http://www.change.org/petitions/ncso...city-of-heroes
Errant I really do appreciate all the advice you've given. Saved me a lot of trouble =D
With that said, here are some changes I made/didn't make.
The 2 Travels is just something I've gotten used to having on all of my characters just about, don't know why I just wind up with an open slot due to not having any powers I want to choose, and I like the extra movement.
Triage is mostly for AV/GM fights, so had to keep that.
Dropped a KB IO, probably going to add the Slow Res enhance
Added proc to Dark Blast, switched set to Thuderstrike in Gloom
Switched proc into TT, changed slotting in Mortar
Fighting to Leadership, dropped Focused Acc since I now have Tactics.
Switched up slotting in Life Drain, little bit better on the numbers.
Grabbed Challenge, figured it'd help with the AI issues when fighting hard target(Looking at you, Ghost of Scrapyard) and needed something that didn't require any slots.
Lost a little recharge, and my end use is a little higher before I take any iAbilities into consideration. I think it might perform better overall though. Any thoughts?

On a side note, if I can spare an extra slot in Acid Mortar for a Lockdown Proc...does it work right?
I am working on a Rad/Traps and it is a hairy russian beast but I want to add the Lockdown Proc both to Poison Gas Trap and Acid Mortar for awesome holds but I am not sure if it will work right.

I know that PGT takes Lockdown but Acid Mortar takes ranged damage sets and Devastation has the chance to hold.
Will Devastation and Lockdown in this set create some mayhem.

First I gotta say..Traps is a beast.
Now, how is Dark Blast damage wise? I know it won't be on the same level as Fire, but is it still competitive? AoE & ST.
Do I need Nightfall? I haven't played with it yet but a 20 degree cone doesn't seem very useful.
Since Dark seems to be lacking the AoE punch other primaries have, i'll be using Trip Mine to help out. Figured with Soul Drain it should pack a pretty good punch, is there any flaws I see with this thinking?
What should I build for defense wise? I know FFG gives defense to all but I don't know if I should shoot for M/R/A or S/L/E/Ranged.
What kind of tactics do you use when it comes to laying down your Traps? Only lvl 28 but I'm curious to hear about all the ways people start different encounters.
Sorry for all the questions, would appreciate any help though!
