Connection drops when playing CoH/CoV

Whenever I play City of Heroes/Villains, at a seemingly random point, my modem/router will completely drop connection. This only seems to happen when playing City of Heroes. This seems like a very odd problem and I hope you can shed light on this and help me to solve it.

I originally started playing CoH when it originally launched seven years ago which explains why my account is connected to U.S. servers even though I live in the U.K. (If I'm not mistaken, Euro servers weren't available when you orginally launched.)

I have tried to follow your guide to posting a tech support post as best I can. Hopefully, I haven't missed anything.

Any chance of a response to this plea for help? Thanks.

The problem is that CoH is a lot more sensitive to lost packets than any other game I know of. It only takes a second or so of lost transmission to cause the game to freeze for a long period then report a mapserver problem. Most other games will take this in stride and simply update your character information if you manage to reconnect after a few seconds.

CoH actually used to do this itself. You could get a period of disconnection lasting several seconds and be frozen in place unable to do anything, then when the connection was reestablished the game would continue. In the past couple of years though this has changed to the much more annoying mapserve after a second of lost connection.

You may actually be losing connection on other games and web pages but as I said before, they will adapt to the loss. You may notice things jump around suddenly in another game or it may take a little longer to get to a web page but that one second loss isn't stretched out to a 30 second freeze before you drop to a login screen like CoH does so it wouldn't be as noticeable.

First thing to do is see how stable your connection actually is in game. While playing type "/netgraph 1" without the quotes. In the lower right of your screen you will see lines that are either colored green, yellow, or red. Short green lines are optimal. That means good connection and short ping times with no lost packets. I expect that with the number of hops away you are that you will likely be seeing tall green lines. Red lines are lost packets. If you are seeing red or even yellow lines then your connection is bad and we will have to find out where it is bad. To turn the netgraph off type "/netgraph 0" without the quotes.

Steps you can take. If your connection to your router is wireless then try running a cable and seeing if you still have the problem. If you don't have the problem using a cable then the problem is that you aren't getting a strong enough wifi signal.

If you experience the lost connection while using a cable then try removing your router from the equation. Plug the cable from your computer directly into the modem. If you don't lose connection when connected directly to the modem then your router is probably going bad. It happens.

If you do still lose connection when plugged directly into the modem then the problem is either with the modem or your service provider. Contact your service provider and let them know that you keep losing connection. They will probably run a remote diagnostic on the modem. If none of this helps then post back with a report and maybe I can think of something else to try.

Thanks for the response.

I did the netgraph thing as instructed. I seem to get short green lines, average ping is about 240ish. I know that's not great but it doesn't surprise me given the distance and number of hops involved.

I have a permanent wired connection to my modem/router. I never do online gaming over Wi-Fi.

Plugging directly into the modem, bypassing the router, is not an option because my router and modem are one and the same device.

I feel I need to clarify something. When I say I lose connection - I don't mean I just lose connection to CoH - I mean my net connection drops altogether and I have to reboot my router. This only happens while playing CoH. At no other time does it do this. I have not played CoH since my original post on 30th October, and my connection has never dropped.

I will start playing again, using the netgraph, and see if it happens again. I will try to keep a record of how much time passes before it drops. Perhaps there is a pattern? Is it possible that the modem/router temporarily overheats because of constantly processing data for pro-longed periods of time?

Sounds more like a firewall issue if its killing your net connection rather than just affecting connectivity to the game servers.

Check the logs on your router and any software firewall/AV you are using and check if anything is being blocked that shouldn't be - you may need to open some ports.
It is possible that something is being flagged up as suspicious and so the firewall is blocking that port/program after repeat attempts to do something.

Also if you are using a third party software firewall (including any provided with your AV software) then disable the Microsoft firewall - you don't want to run two at the same time.

I do no think this is a firewall issue. This is because, when the problem occurs I can't even access the modem/router's settings (via its I.P. address in a browser). It's as if the modem/router is waving a white flag and will only work again once I reboot it. Plus, if the firewall was blocking something, surely I would experience a problem immediately, rather than at some seemingly random point a couple of hours in. My software firewall (Comodo) has nothing in its logs about blocking anything to do with CoH, and even if it did, I don't see how that would cause my modem/router to drop connection. I always have the Windows Firewall deactivated and am aware that only one software firewall should be in use. My router/modem's firewall log is completely clear - no unusual events have been recorded.

I have played CoH on and off for seven years, using the same modem/router (with the same unchanged settings) in all that time. This problem has never occurred until very recently, which makes me wonder if it could be an over-heating issue. I have since made a minor modifcation to my router to increase air-flow from its vents. Maybe this will alleviate the problem.

If you have been using the same modem for 7 years then it's not surprising that it may be failing. Technology does have its limits. If the modem was supplied by your service provider then call them and let them know that it has started shutting down and requiring reboot after any prolonged use. They likely won't hesitate to replace it since it's 7 years old.
