Looking to upgrade/Buy new Computer (CoH Helper included)

It's about that time, the last thing I upgraded was the video card which was a couple years ago. My budget is 300-500 dollars, and I have a 9800gt sitting around the house. I don't really have any preferences to any brands for anything (not tech savy at all) I just want to run on High-Ultra well. I can run on Performance-Recommended right now with some lag. Please help me!

Hate to be a buzzkill, but that system's about as maxed as you're going to get it. You already are sporting max memory. You can't put a newer CPU in.

You could probably put a SLIGHTLY newer video card in, but anything above maybe a GTS 450. Anything more would require a PSU swap-out and the CPU wouldn't be able to keep up with it.

That'll get you into basic Ultra mode.

Any higher, and you need to look at building a new machine.

Your link doesn't take people to your shopping cart. It takes them to theirs.

Drop the links for the individual item(s) into another post.

For about $500 and your spare video card, you might look at FatherXmas computer build. http://tinyurl.com/6cxkar
Its at about $691 but you can shave a little bit of that down if you add in your own video card and maybe swap out a different harddrive or if your able to keep the one you have, use it. Least that will give ya a good starting point.

If you don't mind buying "recertified", (using one myself), look at some here:

@Terra I have zero experience building a PC or friends that have. I'd feel a lot better buying a pre-built or upgrading the one i have, to scared to mess something up =P

Sure, building one can be a little overwhelming if its your first time. I don't think upgrading your current system is a very good option at this point.

The "recertified" Asus I bought at newegg has turned out pretty well, but some people have had issues, and that may not be a good option if your not comfortable "crackin a case" to deal with minor issues. I did a little poking around and found this system. For the price, it's not to bad.

http://dealnews.com/Cyberpower-PC-Ga...-h/508914.html

Cyberpower has been ok for the most part, and if you have trouble, take it back to wallymart. GL with your decision. $449 provide your own monitor. Some specs

•AMD Phenom II X4 955 processor - 3.2GHz, 6MB L3 Cache
Couple of years old, but not bad for this price.
•4GB DDR3 SDRAM system memory (expandable to 8GB)
6-8 GB is better if your running Windows 7 which this system has.
•1TB SATA hard drive
Decent size HD
•AMD Radeon HD 5450 Graphics
Not a very good video card for gaming. You may need to upgrade this

Honestly, if you can scrape together maybe another $100 go out and pick yourself up one of the Inspiron 620's with the i5 chip (The middle one in the pack). Heck, if you really need to, see if you can sell off the old Gateway box. It's not GREAT or anything, but I'd be willing to bet you could nab $100 for it.

$580 (after tax) shipped.

Essentially do NOTHING to it. When it arrives, slap the 9800 in there.

Then, down the road, when you have a budget again, upgrade the power supply and the video card.

Said system will kick the living snot out of the Gateway box from the get-go, and will give you an actual upgrade path in the future.

Would the 300w Power Supply be able to run the card though?

$300-500 isn't going to do a lot. Can't buy a new system with that and your current system is tough to upgrade in a meaningful way.

The system is capped at 2GB due to the Intel chipset on the motherboard. So no joy there.

It's unclear if any of the currently available Socket 775 CPUs you can buy today would even be recognized by the BIOS in that motherboard. Still no joy. Also this will limit your gaming performance even if you get a descent modern video card.

And the 300 watt PSU will severely restrict what video cards you can use but you might be able to swing a GT 430 as a video card with that current power supply.

But a better choice is swapping out the PSU for one with more wattage that will allow you to use a significantly more power video card. Again for these microATX cases I recommend an Antec EA-430 power supply. It's physically the same size as the PSU in that case but cranks out up to 384 watts at 12 volts, more than enough for a very decent video card. Again not sure your CPU can properly feed a card like the GTX 560 fast enough for maximum performance. You may be better off with a lesser card like the GTX 550Ti with money in your pocket, unless you plan to move whatever card you buy to a better platform at a later time.

Here's the instruction FAQ for your case. At least it includes how to swap out the PSU unlike HP.

Oh and for reference, Gatway's support page for your system.
