You may just need to verify the files. I'm not at my Windows computer currently, so I can't check for certain, but I believe you just right-click the game name in the launcher and click "Verify" or "Repair". Hopefully someone else can correct me if that's not where it's located.

Also, if you're able to, can go head to this thread (just click on the image)?

Follow the instructions and paste the results back in this (your own) thread?

This will give us more information that we can use to help troubleshoot your issue. There's even a video walk-through if you need it.

Oh. And welcome to the game (even if you're having a heck of a time getting INTO it right now).

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Okay, first:

You're on an old Intel integrated graphics accelerator.
Even back in the day these were NOT recommended graphics for the game. That they worked at all is lucky happenstance.

You're also on the latest driver version put out by Dell.
Intel has a slightly (only slightly) newer one that may work for you. No guarantees.

Second:
You're on a laptop with 512MB of RAM (100 of which is being eaten by the graphics accelerator).

You may want to try chucking more memory in. Currently your system has one 256MB module that is swappable. And it also has one 256MB module that is NOT swappable. And you can max out at 1.25GB of memory.

Follow this link if you want to try adding more memory. Your system, in general, should be happier with you. Cost: $35 shipped.

Also, you've not updated your Windows (you're still on SP2). You want to apply all available Windows updates if you can. You want all the stuff under:

  • High Priority
  • Optional
Stay away from the drivers section. The drivers from Windows Updates are usually terrible (and terribly outdated) versions.

Note: You're GOING to need to make multiple passes at Windows Updates before you're completely up to date.

Also, afterward, you'll want to clean out the Windows directory of the Updates Uninstall Archives afterward.

  1. Open the file browser
  2. Go to C:\Windows
  3. Click on Tools --> Folder Options
  4. Click on the View tab
  5. Check "Show hidden files and folder"
  6. Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)"
  7. Click OK.
You'll now see a bunch of blue (compressed) folders come up looking like this:

You can delete all the $NTUninstall******** folders.
Don't delete $hf_mig$.

This can free up exceptional amounts of space.

Also, I'd recommend letting the machine defrag overnight after doing the updates and getting rid of the uninstall files.

Your audio drivers are also old as hell, but they're the latest from Dell. And, likely, you won't be able to find newer.

Now, when we get down to the bottom of it. There are a few things here (as I've listed) that may allow you to play the game. But, you're trying to get it to work on a platform that's not supported by the manufacturer anymore. As such, the platform meets BARE minimum requirements for ability to run the game, and the drivers are 4-6 years out of date, which can cause massive compatibility problems.

There exists the possibility that you simply are NOT going to be able to play the game on your current system.

Sorry if this is a let-down. But I figure you'd rather have someone tell you this up-front than going ahead and making you jump through a bunch of hoops and then telling you "guess you're boned".

You can try going in with safe mode. But there's no guarantees. If you can get in with safe mode, try bumping the settings up a little at a time. This may help you get settings that work for you. Warning, safe mode is BUTT UGLY.

  1. Open up the NCSoft Launcher
  2. Right-click on the City of Heroes launch button and select Properties.
  3. On the screen that comes up, check the "Safe Mode" box and click OK.
  4. Launch the game.

The next time you launch the NCSoft launcher, take the same first two steps, then UNCHECK Safe Mode. Otherwise you would have to fix your resolution and everything every time.

If you can actually get it to run without bombing out, I'd recommend putting an extra gig of memory in the thing (as per earlier advice). It really will make a huge difference in playability.
