Invuln/StJ
Haven't played with StJ yet so can't really say much about that. What I can say is go look at both of Call Me Awesome's Invulnerability guides.

Are you using Mid's Hero Planner(www.cohplanner.com)? It's the de facto build planner in the game. Show us what you're thinking so far by exporting a build here using Mids.
Those would be places to start.

I've read both of those guides and the first 20 levels guide helped me through the first 20 levels, and I'm still trying to get some of the concepts in the second guide.
This is what I have so far. Not sure if I should take the Fighting Power Pool because another friend of mine has a tank that doesn't run it and he tanks Incarnate Content regularly.
No slotting since like I said, for certain defenses I have no idea where to start, and I also don't know if there are certain damage sets that help defense and if they are needed in the build.
I can probably figure out how to IO slot the damage powers I just need help on everything else.

Depending on the Primary he's got, and how he's slotted for set bonuses, your friend may not need Tough/Weave.
Tough/Weave isn't necessary, but it certainly helps make an Inv tank tougher. Tough will allow you to hard cap your s/l resistances, and Weave will make it easier for you to soft cap (45% defense) s/l/e/n.
Personally I would take tough/weave on my Inv. tank. I wouldn't grab Focused Accuracy as I think it cost to much endurance for the +acc it brings. I can replace most of that in set bonuses that don't cost me endurance. I would include CJ for the amount of Defense it brings vs. the endurance cost. You should include the Steadfast Defense Unique in your build. Take a look at other Invulnerability builds in the tank forums. See what others have done. See what others have recommended. Pull their builds into Mids and play with them to see how the sets effect things.

Should I swap out some of my Common Def IOs for a LotG +Rech in each one that can take it?
Is there another set in Spinning Strike or Sweeping Cross that would be better than what I have chosen?

I got an Invul / StJ tanker, and its nice, very smash mouth in your face fighting for a Tanker who wants to bludgeon without the clumsyness of super strength.
He was using Battle Axe so I'm not sure how that effected him.
I looked at the other guide again but with a magnifying glass this time, and I actually understand what is needed so I'm gonna post up this one last build to see if its up to snuff. I'm able to keep my Focused Accuracy but if I really don't need it I'm sure I can find something else to use. My only questions are as follows: If the Kinetic Combats are cheap enough, should I go with them over the Smashing Haymakers? Will it make that much of a difference? |
Looking over your build there's things I would change. First you're going to want a 5th slot in your attacks, 4 Smashing Haymakers don't give you enough accuracy. I'd grab a high level Acc/Dam/Rech or Acc/Dam/End from Crushing Impact or Mako's Bite and toss it in the 5th slot.
The Blessing of the Zephyr set isn't worthwhile anymore since they gutted it's defense bonus a few issues back, particularly as it's main focus is ranged defense. An Invuln tanker has typed defense and those BotZ IO's are only providing 0.63% E/N defense. I would use a common jump in Super Jump and, if you can afford it or have A Merits to buy it with, a Luck of the Gambler 7.5% recharge in Combat Jumping. The extra slots there can go to fill out your attacks.
Sweeping Cross could use more slots and the Multi Strike set isn't ideal; it's cheap but it doesn't provide the bonuses you really want. I'd probably go with a frankenslot of 3 Eradication and a couple of Scirocco's Dervish in there getting you ED capped acc & dam along with an E/N defense bonus and a regeneration bonus.
Moving down your list I'd again put a 5th slot in all your single target attacks. Also, you've already reached the soft cap for S/L defense without the Kin Combat in Crushing Uppercut so that set isn't doing anything for you.
I highly recommend dropping Focused Accuracy; it's a massive end hog and it doesn't provide you with enough benefit for it's cost. You can get the same tohit bonus out of a Kismet Accuracy (misslabeled, it's actually +tohit) IO that can go into Combat Jumping, Invincibility, Tough Hide or Weave.)
If you're running into end issues I suggest saving your A Merits for a Miracle +recovery IO to put into Health. Luck of the Gambler or Gift of the Ancients are good sets for endurance also, particularly the GotA as 4 of them gives you bonus endurance and additional recovery.
I personally think Spinning Strike is currently accepting the wrong IO sets; it's a clone of Thunderstrike which uses PBAOE yet it takes Targeted AOE. Be that as it may it's currently taking Targeted AOE and the only one of those sets that's worth a damn is the Posi Blast you've put there.
I would rearrange your powers a little and move Tough/Weave a bit earlier in the build. I'm not familiar with Street Justice yet; my only character with it is only 19. Based on my experience though it's a really fast set so I question if you need all those attacks to build your chain. You'll want the two finisher attacks and you definitely want Rib Cracker (or Nut Cracker). As you level up I'd evaluate if you need all the others. It looks to me that Shin Breaker or Heavy Blow may be skippable... from the numbers you'll want Crushing Uppercut.
I hope that helps, and enjoy your tanker.

About the only things I'd add to CMA's post:
You can use Alignment (A) Merits to purchase the Kin Combats, the LotG 7.5% recharge, or the Miracle +recovery. You can get A-merits a couple of different ways. One, run hero/villain tip missions. The second time you "re-affirm" yourself as a hero/villain you'll get an A-Merit, and every time there after. You can get those every other day on a toon. Do the Signature Story Arc (currently "Who will die") as you can currently get a merit for the first two times you run the arc.
Lastly, don't bother with the Steadfast -kb IO in Temp. Invulnerability. Switch that out to a Steadfast Unique; + 3%def/resist. You're getting enough kb protection out of Unyielding without the -kb IO.

He had the KB IO in TI? Ouch, I missed that, I just noticed the Steadfast icon in Mid's and assumed it was the 3% unique. Yes, Invuln already has all the KB protection it'll ever need in Unyielding; the -KB IO is a total waste.

I missed your bit about the A-merits, even after looking at it a couple of times. My bad.

So Skip Kin Combat if it isn't cheap on my server (Haven't had a chance to look at it yet) And put the fighting set earlier.
I'm not sure I want to drop Heavy Blow as in the leveling up process it has done me extremely well. Also not having three consecutive powers hurts the combo build ups waiting for either power to recharge. I'll probably drop Heavy blow, but I do want to keep the others.
I'll post up my new build here as soon as I finish it. I really appreciate the help that has been given to me. I have been understanding more and more what is needed, I just need a little help here and there.
And I thought the Steadfast KB Prot was the Unique, lol, my bad.
EDIT: Here it is, slotting was difficult, not because I didn't have enough, but because I had to many. If I missed something let me know.

So Skip Kin Combat if it isn't cheap on my server (Haven't had a chance to look at it yet) And put the fighting set earlier.
|
And I thought the Steadfast KB Prot was the Unique, lol, my bad. |
Big improvement on the build. Some other suggestions:
I like using the Mako's quad as the fifth slot for SH or KC, since it provides a little recharge as well as accuracy, damage and endurance.
Use a Scirocco's Dervish Dam/End in sweeping cross instead of the Acc/Dam. The Erad quad tends to be priciest in the set and you can skip it if you get enough end reduction from the Scirocco's Dervish.
If you can find one or two more slots for Combat Readiness, put another recharge there and add a Rectified Reticle +percep, which will replace some of what was lost when removing Focused Accuracy.
Consider using sets for your defense powers. LotG is pretty expensive, but Gift of the Ancients isn't too bad and has some nice bonuses.
Move the Kismet +Acc from Weave to Tough Hide. The power has to be on for the IO to work, and this way it'll be 'always on' whether you're using Weave or not.
A Winter's Gift slow resistance is a good choice for Super Speed or Super Jump.
You don't need the Smashing Haymaker set in Crushing Uppercut to be at the S/L softcap, and CU takes hold sets, so consider changing the slotting to 4 Crushing Impact and 2 Basilisk's gaze for the E/NE defense. (You can use the BGs with Smashing Haymaker but it'll be a little light on damage enhancement.)
Slot LBE with Thunderstrike instead of Decimation, TS gives a 2.5% E/NE def bonus for just three slots.
There's really no point in slotting a jump IO in CJ; I'd go for an LotG Defense, or a common defense IO instead.
Unless you're really set on the idea of having both SS and SJ, I'd consider dropping SS for Hasten.
Consider moving a slot from Physical Perfection and slotting Health with a Numina regen/recovery unique--you actually end up with more recovery as well as more regen that way.
Here's your build with my recommendations; S/L/E/NE def are over the soft-cap and F/C def is at 34% with one in range of Invinc.

My Characters
Knight Court--A CoH Story Complete 2/3/2012
I like it, my only issue is the expense on the Mako's but I think I can deal with that.
I'll use that build, thanks a lot!
Hey there! I recently created a Tanker and wanted to ask the community about a proper build. I am learning the mechanics of how tanking works, my biggest issue is the build itself and how to slot it with the proper IO sets once I hit level 47-50.
I'd like to take the majority of the powers in both sets. I believe I can do without Unstoppable but please tell my why I am wrong if I am. I'd also like to stick with Energy Mastery using Focused Accuracy and Laser Beam Eyes.
If I could get some assistance with this that would be wonderful. I've searched for builds and tips but there isn't a lot of direct help out there.
Thanks in advance!
EDIT: Forgot to add that I'm not looking to put any Purple sets into the powers, and I'd rather not spend a large amount of Inf on the build. Enough to get it functional and be able to hold my own against an AV and some mobs, and maybe off-tank some Incarnate content. LotG's, Numinas, Miracles, and Regen Tissues shouldn't be an issue to grab so those are fair game. Thanks again!
