New To Blasters!
You can softcap your defense (45%) to ranged attacks OR to smashing/lethal damage by taking a defense based epic shield, some pool powers, and spending a lot on IO's. Some choose ranged, some choose S/L. It comes down to preference. Overall most probably choose ranged, since most blasters tend to play at range, and that covers all damage types.
Other than the defense, your survivability will come from killing everything before it kills you.

I like s/l def on my blasters that I tend to get into melee with. As Supermax said, it's a preference thing mostly. El/MM has several PBAoEs that require you to get close to take full advantage. A side benefit of an s/l build is that they tend to be better at packing in +rech bonuses- Drain Psyche is a fantastic power, and more recharge means you'll have it up more often.
The downside to an s/l build compared to ranged is that you'll get hit with more mez, and you can't stack your defense with an epic resist shield (for a bit of 'layered' mitigation). And, scorpion shield requires a trip redside. This is the only epic with s/l def that doesn't make you look like an ice cube.
Hey Guys,
I'm just starting to play a blaster that is Elec/Mental and am enjoying a lot. I'm normally found playing melee characters such as my Fire/Fire tank, my Claws/SR scrapper, my Elec/WP brute and my FF/Arch Defender but here's the thing; all of these characters have high defence and can stand on their own. I was fooling around in Mids and found that blasters don't really get much of anything besides damage. Am I just not seeing the defence aspect to a blaster or is there not one. So I guess my question is:
What should I be expecting from my new Elec/Mental blaster? What should I be focused on when slotting enhancements and choosing powers? Should I even worry about defensive powers (hover, combat jumping, fighting power set etc.)?
Thanks
