Mission Architect - Save Failed. Custom Character Was Not Valid.
I found that backing all the way out of the Custom Character Creator and going back in solved this issue for me.
On the common costume pieces is that on a new character, or on a current one you are trying to edit? I saw another thread about that in particular, likely because of new items added causing the lists to have a different order now.
It's attempting to create a brand new character. I can try this and see what happens though.

FYI to the people in charge:
While I hate to use caps lock...
THIS IS STILL HAPPENING, AND THE STORE IS STILL MAKING IT LOOK LIKE IT'S DUE TO UNPURCHASED COSTUME PIECES.
This is not only a hugely bad bug for those people who use architect, this is a -serious- misleading of your customers into -paying- for costume pieces that they might not even need, nor want, due to an error that has persisted with your game client now for -weeks- of hotfixes, even after being reported near right after the launch of I21.
I strongly advise that this get looked into near immediately, and I will also be getting in touch with your customer service department by phone tomorrow to be issued a refund for the points that i've been spending due to an error with your client.

Having the same issue as well, and I must admit it is also becoming a bit ridiculous that this has not been fixed...
I'm not even trying to use any parts I purchased - I'm using costume pieces that are all openly available to ALL players, so a bug related to the store wouldn't even make sense for a justification, it's just a flat out bug.
If you're going to re-organize the costume pieces, that's fine, but come on use some common sense and check that it works with the various venues in game that use that system. Bad bug, bad testing, bad implementation. Please spend the next 6 hour downtime of maintenance you do addressing this issue...
Little edit to my post above, turns out it was because I was using the Imperial Defense belt option. Which is a new costume set auto-unlocked for VIPs, or at least it's a new set of some kind. I've made a brand new character with it in the game and didn't have to pay. So perhaps it is a store issue-related bug but the this costume set was available to VIPs at launch of i21...

It does NOT do it with Veteran Rewards.

This seems to be yet another failure of the implementation of the in-game market. Why did the devs go with such a micro-managed account setup?
I'm oversimplifying for sake of example, but the devs seem to have gone with a model where every single individual venue of the game has a half million if/then statements now attached to it. If you have this purchasable item, then you can use this. Etc etc.
It's the same thing that causes annoyance with the store itself. Every single thing I've already purchased, already have, or have even JUST purchased STILL shows up in the store!
Poor implementation imo, which leads to countless bugs and errors just like this one.

I'm getting an error in mission architect that is not allowing me to create any custom characters. This particular bug has also cost me money. I purchased the Alpha Set thinking that I needed to buy it in order to make this error go away. However, it does it even with pieces and sets that I already own 100%.
The error is:
"Save Failed. Custom character was not valid. Custom character has an invalid costume."
This needs to be fixed. The character creator makes it seem in some senses like it's because of missing pieces on the Paragon market. however, after spending MONEY on these pieces, it still won't let you create. I just dumped 5 bucks into trying to buy pieces to make the error disappear. However, as stated before, this happens even with common costume pieces that are not for sale.
