Some Warshade Questions

Hey guys, I've been on and off the game a lot and recently came back to it. I reached level 50 on my Warshade and I've been figuring out a good build for him that allows him to solo, yet be efficient on a team. By efficient, I don't mean just damage. I mean utility as well (disorients, buffs, etc.). I made up this build in Mid's and I've been playing around with it; it seems very, very solid. I'm fighting team size of 5 (no bosses, +0, granted) and surviving. If I can jump into the mob and get off eclipse/sunless mire, I'm usually set for that fight. Sometimes all it takes is a Sunless Mire, Judgement power, and Quasar to completely finish off everythin in a matter of seconds. My only problems are with mez, but I don't worry too much since my Gravitic Emanation can keep even bosses out of the picture for 20+ seconds. It's the most fun I've ever had playing my Warshade .

That being said, I have a couple questions that maybe some experienced Kheldian players could answer (Please keep in mind, I'm a FULL-HUMAN Warshade. No shapeshifts whatsoever);

Is it possible to perma-Eclipse? (Being able to keep Eclipse on all the time, assuming you have mobs to use it on all the time.)

What IO set would be ideal for Eclipse? (Six set, of course. I currently only have regular IO's in it. These would be; 1 Acc, 2 Resist, and 3 Recharge.)

I personally went with Cardiac for my Alpha Incarnate slot with my Warshade since I know how completely Endurance starved we are, holding up 6-9 toggles at once and skills that cost large amounts of endurance and I've been happy with my choice... But my damage feels just a tad low sometimes and I'm not sure if Musculature is a good path to take. What alpha slot would you recommend for a full human Warshade?

I've been told Orbiting Death can be good, but I found the power to be way too much of an endurance drainer to be even close to good. Is there something I'm missing? Or is this power really not all it's cracked up to be?

Of course, this is all opinionated, but all feedback is really appreciated. At first, I searched around to see if my questions were answered in other posts, but the forum posts here seem to be pretty old. I'm hoping my thread will even be noticed hehe. ^_^''. I didn't see any recent issue builds out there with advice, so I thought I'd just make a thread and ask. If anyone does know any up-to-date guides on a human Warshade, please, let me know. I'd be very glad to view it . Thanks for taking the time to read through my massive wall of text lol.

And here is my build:

A few things are leaping out at me. others no doubt will follow anon.

1. Eclipse can be perma'd fairly easily. No six-slotting required - I manage perma with four.
1a. Those four being Performance Shifter (acc/rec) and three resist set IOs (the res/rechs). Get whatever's cheapest because it makes no difference. It's not like your mom's going to check them for holes. I hate set snobbery.

2. Alpha slot: for the love of seafood, drop Cardiac and get Spiritual, stat. "Endurance starved?" Stygian Circle, my friend. Spam that puppy when it's up whether you think you need it or not. Endurance is other AT's problem. Also, I checked Mids: with your current posted build, Spiritual at tier 3 will push you over the permaclipse threshold with no other changes. Congratulations!

3. For a pure human build, you're hampering yourself not taking Orbiting Death. You'll like the extra DoT damage. Lovely synergy with Inky Aspect. All that wobbling around stunned and dieing.

4. Recharge recharge recharge. Yours is weak, and weaker still when Hasten is down. Tweak your IOs and cherrypick sets with global recharge when possible without distorting the essence of your raison d'etre as a Doomsquid, which is to kill in style.

5. Don't turn up your nose at Stygian Return. What? A crappy self-rez? No young padawan - a mag 10, 15-second untouchable buff. You can cause a lot of mayhem in fifteen seconds and all you need to do is allow the mobs to imagine for a brief moment that they've won. Then you destroy them.

6. The MFing Warshade. Go. Kill. Be purple.

Another thing you may want to consider, is that Dwarf as built in Mez protection.

I know as a human only warshade, you wouldn't have dwarf, but its very useful, and with enough recharge you can walk around with a gapless single target attack chain (complete with 20%-ish heal every 6 or so seconds) capped damage due to dwarf mire (doubly capped damage with sunless mire as a lead attack, then go dwarf to smash some more) and capped resistance with 1 person in range of eclipse (due to dwarf having already high base resistance)

The MFing guide goes over the pros and cons of dwarf form, but with the changes on beta allowing dwarf to be uninterruptable, you'll basically never have to worry about mez powers again once you get dwarf. And with just the base slotting in the power itself, and 2 - 3 slots per dwarf power spared, you can have one hell of a dual-form beast build.

I suggest reading AlienOne's guide. The builds are dated, but the general information is still good.
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=190529

I'll even contribute a modern build to the discussion. My own Warshade actually can shapechange, but he prefers to stay in Human Scraptroller form most of the time. I've had a vague plan to make an all-Human build for some time, and I plan to finally do so when Issue 21 arrives. However, if I went all-Human today, this would be my build.

Opening attack chain: Shadow Step, Eclipse, Sunless Mire, Gravity Well, Unchain Essence.
Any minions that are still standing after that are generally ignored, since Inky Aspect will render them helpless while Orbiting Death and pets will finish them off. Gravity Well comes up pretty quickly with this build so you don't have to do much with filler attacks.

There is no convenient answer to status effects, at least until you get Clarion. Acrobatics helps a lot, and the status resistance uniques from Aegis and Impervious Skin will minimize your downtime.

Alright, taking some of the advice given to me, I've devised a new Tri-form build for my Warshade. The MFing Warshade! article really got me pumped to try out triform as I've never done it before. Using the advice given to me from the article, I devised this build from it. Is it any good?

You went triform!

This build is solidifying now. Minor things:

1. Orbiting Death is under-slotted but that's ok because your Nova attacks are over-slotted. The six-bonuses for those sets are mediocre and the added dps is mostly being eaten by diminishing returns. Remove a slot from each and add them to OD.

2. You've already got +59% accuracy from bonuses so you can probably sneak that accuracy out of Eclipse. Two options here: Expensive - add it to OD and five-slot Obliterations for another 3.75% melee defense. Cheap - add it to Gravity Well and slot another set of Crushing Impacts instead of the Basilisks. Seems a shame to waste a high damage attack and with a 6.3 sec. recharge it's already stackable.

3. Some may scoff but I don't think you really need that Miracle +recovery unique. If you have it, use it, but don't spend influence on one. If you want a unique in that spot, consider a Regenerative Tissue +regen instead. Ditto the four-slotted Stamina. Two is plenty (I only use one.)

4. Inky Aspect does require a tohit check, so add one more slot there. Which brings me to:

HOs are a Warshade's best friend. The old school hami-O is a great way of stretching slots. Inky for example: two Endoplasms (acc/mez), BAM. Don't want to waste slots on Shadow Bolt or Ebon Eye? Toss in a pair of Nucleoli (acc/dmg), WHAM. Double your power, double your fun.

Here is my tri form Warshade. Granted, I skimped the human form, and only took OD for the 'cool factor' but she works out pretty nicely, and if i want to run human, i can for awhile.

Nova is build to basically just be a flying death machine, and dwarf is meant to off tank and deal decent damage so i can soak mez'es and still manage to stay alive.

I agree with most of the advice I've seen in this thread. I've got a few comments to make, though.

I would leave the Nova AoE powers six slotted, but I'd remove the Damage/Range IO and replace it with a common recharge. Positron's Blast is notoriously light on recharge.

Gravity Well is a great place to get the 7.5% recharge from Basilisks, yes, but it would do well to have some damage. The good news is that if you can spare two slots from anywhere, you'll be able to almost ED cap the damage of this power.

Dwarf Mire could benefit from some damage enhancement and so could Dwarf Drain, if you can spare the slots. Drain actually does more damage than Strike, although you'll get better DPS using Strike because it animates much faster.

This is the gospel freaking truth right here. My 'shade spent years without stamina at all. Health and Stamina are just gravy. I wouldn't ever suggest adding slots to those powers, as you can almost always get more out of them from somewhere else.

Thanks a ton for the feedback! I've been soloing +4x8 missions like they're nothing! I'm very proud of how my warshade has turned out. A very complex but powerful character.

Now, my next endeavor is to tackle the beast that is warshade PvP. I'll post the build below this paragraph. My thoughts about PvP is that our draining powers are pretty damn useless here. The chances of coming across a group of 5+ pvpers close enough to use eclipse/sunless mire seems pretty trivial. Secondly, I thought about shapeshifting and thought it to be also useless, seeing as our fuel to the shapeshifting isn't truly available due to circumstances and the fact that shapeshifting turns off all your toggles. You don't have the time to turn off/on toggles in pvp. So my best bet was to go human WS. The hope is to be able to use Essence Drain & Aid Self (Aid self would be useful since I can easily teleport away and use it, then teleport back like nothing happened) for healing, have extremely heavy resistances, and good status resistance since I didn't bother to take Dwarf. The main attacks would obviously be Shadow Blast, Gravity Well, and Gravimetric Snare.

Otherwise, I'm pretty new to the WS PvP stuff. If anyone has some thoughts/suggestions, please don't hesitate to say it.

Unfortunately, in the current pvp environment Warshades do not really have too much to bring to the table - you have already highlighted most of the problems so I wont retread them again.

What it really comes down to is that you are unlikely to be able to bring down another player on your own with a Warshade.because you lack significant debuffs of the right type (-res, -def) and you lack strong burst damage. Outside of specific niche situations like buffing yourself with Sunless Mire off of a group of nearby NPCs in a zone you are not likely to be able to pull off a kill before your opponent either kills you, runs away or heals up. That is the bad news.

The good news is that you can make yourself quite a nuisance in terms of disruption. You have slows, you have a good stun and an immobilize you can spam. Nebulous Form for phase and built-in teleport mean that you can easily evade or survive most attacks so long as you aren't taken completely by surprise. If you don't mind a adopting a somewhat unorthodox (some might say cheap) strategy, you can likely pick up arena victories by biding your time until sudden death and then winning in the eleventh hour. In zone play, you can choose a few good spots to run to with obligingly placed NPCs to give you Eclipse and Mire, then about-face and deal suddenly decent burst damage to your unfortunate foe.

This is by far one of the least pvp suited of any of the ATs due to its heavy pve focus and reliance on living and dead enemies to fuel the key powers, but if you are determined to go for it then the above is the approach I would recommend.. You may also consider putting Nova form back in to give you more damage when you really need it. Good luck.
