current katana/willpower help? (build inside.)

Hello! Having JUST got my very first character to lvl 50 (fire/dark corr) I'm working on something during the xp weekend.

so far, this what i've come up with. There don't seem to be alot of very recent builds/discussions on katana/willpower and i've never used EITHER, so i'm a fish out of water for scrappers here.

I've not yet figured out what my "ancilary" should be, (on my corr i took the scorpion shield) I'm largely basing my build on the idea that E/N takes priority with Divine A taking me to melee/lethal softcap (or so i gather from what i read on the forums, im not really a wizard with numbers.) Seems i am hurting for acc bonuses going for this style however, and i don't entirely understand how this translates to e/n softcap + a defacto S/l softcap (sorta, the whole melee/lethal thing.)

Also- im not exactly rolling in dough, so i created variations (possible "ideal") slotting sets in gamblers cut and golden dragonfly, as well as a possible different slotting in Divine. Soaring dragon and Lotus drop i only provided ONE slotting.

ALSO, i was not sure if regenerative tissue (+reg) should go in fast healing or elsewhere.

Phew! Well i'll be happy to get any feedback to help me as i tinker and start saving up for all these new expensive miracles and numias and various other things. ( i say expensive because i still don't exactly understand how i could "farm inf" so to speak with my lvl 50 dude. I'm too squishy for all the "4x8x" stuff i here people talking about as a corr. =-/

Thanks for your time!

Here's a dumbed down cheapened version of my build. The original was softcapped to Melee/LENRC, but costs.

Ah ill defintely check that out against what ive got so far. How do i figure out when i am "softcapped" to anything? the cap is 45% correct? so i would need to reach what numbers in E/N F/C S/L (and assuming what toggles/abilities) would "cap" me? I'm trying to understand what i need as base, unaltered defense numbers to make up the rest with my ablities and achieve that level of surviablity.

moved a couple things. a couple specific questions about my new build, Should i put a full numia set in Fast healing (more E/n def) and move the regen tissue proc to "rise to the challenge" or Health?

As of currently i've got 6 slots left to play around with, and im still not sure how much of any given thing i need (is weave worth it? tough?) And i still have powers left to pick and no idea what to pick. Some folks have suggested shadow meld, if so how many slots do i save for an anccilary power or 2?

I will be running tips over the next couple weeks to try to get my LOTG recharges among other things.

ok... trying to narrow it down myself.

with all toggles heightened/combatjumping/weave and the steadfast unique i get to 27% e/n/f/c 11.5 S/L (not as important because of divine capping my lethal/melee)

with my projected set bonuses i have 18% e/n (45% exactly right?) but only 12.4+ f/c (so 5.6% shy of cap.) If i could figure out how to get one of those pvp 3% defense things (ive played for 3 months now and still could only afford one if i sold everything i have on all my characters combined.)

--- then i could drop my reactive in MIND OVER BODY and use AEGIS getting me that last 3% without dropping my base s/l any lower.

ok, i think i understand what the goal is here now, after swimming in number stew for a few days.

uh still not alot of feedback on this thread i see, and im still open to it (im losing alot of rech/acc etc bonuses to pursue durability, not sure if that's "smart" or not.)

How would i get that gladiators 3% def within a reasonable time table?

---------edit, steadfast was already part of the bonus numbers, so i'm now 3% shy of e/n cap.

i moved some stuff around again and got another aegis set in there, so with my toggles + sets f/c would be 24% (toggles) +15.5 set = 39.5 and 24+18 =42 % for E/N and a respectable 12.4+8.5 = 21% S/L

would basically cap the ENFC with one gladiator, and hopefully DA and resists keep me alive vs S/L.

Forgot to post latest build.

this is my breakdown:
(the +3 from steadfast is included in these numbers.)
15.4 enfc heightened
2.5 all combat jumping
6 all weave

24% total enfc
8.5% S/L

set bonuses
20.5 en
17.4 f/c
12.4 s/l

20.5+24 =44.5 EN
17.4+24 =41.4 FC
8.5+12.4 =21 SL

So obtaining one gladiator could respec me out of a few slots i used for more E/N to cap it completely.

Yes, and why you will see Glad +3 in so many builds.
the Steadfast +3 is easier and cheaper to get.
Guassians is another very popular item for the same reason, it's +2.5.
Barrier T4 will give you perma +5 to all defense, assuming you don't want a different power in the destiny slot. That will solidify the cheap version of the build I posted.
Don't obsess over Regen Tissue. You have a build with 600 to 1000 regen, 25 isn't going to make it or break it. On the other hand, a Glad +3 might. Prioritize all your powers and slots with the same things in mind, don't get too fixated on any one power, bonus type, or slot. This may even include defense.

I get my Glads from A-Merits, but Emp-Merits may be potentially faster, but I've not checked the numbers/prices. Buying it is a crap shoot, everyone wants one so the few that sell even at the influence cap of 2 billion are random luck if you get one. I'd value them at 3.8 billion, so there's almost no way to buy them in-game, and few ways to arrange to buy anything that expensive - none that I'd trust.

Defense soft-cap is 45%. If you have 40% you will literally take twice as much damage as you would if you have 45%. Also keep in mind, most damage is Melee, next is Ranged, and Last is AoE. I don't have the percentages for typed damage, but it's most likely SL / EN / FC. SLE are the top three I'd want to defense against, from personal experience. With that in mind, I'd rather have a hole to AoE,than to range, than to Melee. You do have a hole to Toxic/Psy, almost everyone does. You do have a hole to Ranged Smashing, there's not much you can do about it as a willpower, suck it up.

How much defense, recharge, and accuracy you want, is entirely up to you. Every player will choose a different goal. I've seen people perfectly happy with willpower and half the defense numbers I put in a build.
You most likely want enough recharge to run GC->SD->GC->GD repeat.
You most likely want Spiritual T4 Alpha.
You most likely want enough accuracy such that when you malfactor to level X you can hit Level +U Critters. I generally aim for mid 30s and +3.

For my build, I'd likely choose level 35 to 36 IOs. When you lose tactics (38) and/or the acc bonuses, you lose the ability to hit +3. Tactics will drop when you go below (38-5) 33. So you want to maintain bonuses to 33, so that means max IO level 36 for any set giving an acc bonus, and preferably for the defense bonuses as well. A kismet +acc could help here, but you'd have to steal a slot from something to get it, and it will only go so far. I'd love to have one in the build.

It's DXP weekend, don't expect many people to even glance till next week sometime.

Then, when they do glance, you have to get their attention, or ask them personally.

Specific question are more likely to be answered, "I have this great build, but I need more endurance"?

It's more likely someone will simply answer by supplying you a high-end build, than modifying your build. That's as much due to the difficulty of making a high-end build as it is to the personal style and goals of each player. My builds are most often more defensive oriented than offensive, and most often rely on vectored defense over typed. If you want a build like that, not only can I help you, I probably already have one. However, Willpower is typed over vectored, especially the way you seem to want to build it, therefore, you may have more luck with someone else. My build works, just barely, and once you can recognize these things, you'll see that it relies heavily on vectored techniques, even though it's a typed build.

Most High-end builds are very delicate, you can't change even one power, or one slot. In fact we've gone to great lengths to free that one slot up for that one other critical bonus somehwere. The DA slotting, that one has taken years for the best builders to come up with a few high-end variants, just to free up enhancement 1 slot. I'm not even sure that's the best one, but it was the best one for me for that build, just to gain one slot.

The GD slotting in my build may need to be modified for Endurance, so as to switch the build to Spiritual. I can't remember without running a spreadsheet to check the numbers. I know I changed it for one of my KAT builds, don't recall which one. That change, if I remember correctly would change the offensive multiplier from 1.20 to 1.16, but also change you from huffing and puffing and needing cardiac to being able to leverage spiritual. Again, one or two slots changed and it has a major impact on the playability of the build and which other powers it can use and take. However, it takes a spreadsheet and an hours worth of work to double check that and figure it out.

I'd actually not thought about end to this point. I figured with fast rec and stamina and the 3x procs (1 miracle 2 pshift) i would be pretty safe from the end monster.

AT least i hope, but i don't know how you measure that in the numbers exactly.

I appreciate the response. i choose away from tactics because i figured out a way with a specfic ancillary to get powers that would give me bonuses i want (like a 2 slotted hold for Baslisk gaze to add 2.5 e/n) So i did not want to go manuvers to waste a pick (couldn't see running ANOTHER toggle with my willpower 4 + tough weave CJ expected to be running all the time as well, but thats because i don't know what to look for in the numbers to indent potential end problems.)
I don't have a ton of experience with the incarnate stuff yet- did not know i could get a perma + 5. (that would cap me right there to ENFC)

Is my logic sound on going lower s/l to maintain it with Divine thus making room for my enfc capping? I still end up with like 50% s/l resists running all the time or higher, so i feel like im not "soft" to that damage should it get through as im setting up DA.

Thanks again for input!

Here's a Kat/WP build I was thinking about rolling but just got really involved with my blaster. It will cost about 5 billion influence, most of which will pay for a Glad Armor proc, 5 LotG's +7.5 rech, 4 sets of Kinetic Combat, Miracle/Numina procs.

Made to run with the Spiritual Core Alpha and it helps to have the 4 major accolades. I couldn't get Hasten perma without sacrificing defense but will be fine if run with the Ageless, Destiny power.

Chose Darkness Mastery Ancillary Pool just to softcap S/L even if there are way better Ancillary/Epic pools to choose from. Carry a tray of small purples and laugh during the iTrials:

With the above build
You Gain

  • SL without DA
  • Slightly better AoE - if Flashing Steel is usable with that slotting - it should be ok i21 with some work.
You Lose
  • The higher recharge top damage chain
  • Achilles damage multiplier.
  • 205 ST dps to 165 ST dps (estimate)
  • Shadowmeld

If you can't crack 200 dps, and bring at least minimal AoE, I'm not interested. But, obviously, everyone doesn't have the same build goals, and filling the defense without DA is an advantage, as is filling the Smashing hole. You have to decide your own goals and benchmarks yourself.

My benchmarks are:
20x Survivability Rating or 0.05 permissibility*. (without Barrier)
2250 Spike Damage Protection** (HP x Resist) (without Barrier)
50 hps on demand regeneration or healing. (without Rebirth)
200 ST dps (without Reactive or Lore)
350 AoE dps (using my measurement methods) (without Reactive, Lore, or Judgement)
135s recharge on Hasten

* Weighted Average with MSL 50%, RENFC 33%, ATP 17%.
** Weighted 2250 MSL, 1500 RAENFCTP.
*** Things never workout as above, every set has it's own strengths and weaknesses,

Interesting. The build you posted doesn't meet several of the requirements you listed here. My posted build really wasn't up for your criticism. Like I said, I have not even started creating a Kat/WP build and I am sure I will figure out a few things a long the way.

So instead of giving him feedback on a build I have not even played yet, I posted something I have in mind.

Not attacking the other build, it has both strengths and weaknesses mine doesn't. Equally, mine has both strengths and weaknesses it doesn't.

The cheap version is as close as I could get without making an entirely new build. The idea is to start with the cheap one, then work up to the more expensive. I both plan incrementally ahead of time, and build incrementally as I go, refining the builds. I had to back off a bit from my end goals to maintain a lower priced build.

My actual build, which is much more expensive with 10 Hamis and a PvP +def, with the main 4 accoloades and spiritual has:

  • It's soft-capped to MLFCEN, that alone is 20x, adding resists takes it further. There is a hole to S, but that's mostly covered by M, leaving main Ranged Smashing. I'll have to live with the Ranged Smashing hole. However, Having to rely on DA is it's own minor purgatory.
  • Its 2250 hp, that alone is spike protection, adding the resists is just padding.
  • If it's willpower and it doesn't have 50 hps regen, something is very wrong.
  • With spiritual it's a rough average of 175 dps x 1.16 for Achilles applied 4 times over 10 seconds, for around 205 st dps. With the PvP in GD, it's 5 times in 10 second for 1.2x, but I'm pretty sure I was supposed to change the slotting for better endurance, and just didn't save that into the build yet.
  • AoE is a bit abysmal at 350, barely passing, if it passes.

latest build.

soaring dragon has a flip set of 4 kinetic 1 mako 1 lysome en changing the final numbers to
25.8 s/l 40.4 E/N/F/C before incarnate. I decided against my original pool involving shadow meld because i figured i just wouldn't get much use out of it. Where as water spout seems useful straight out of the box with minimal slotting, and i still get a hold for my 2 GAZE to get that extra e/n like i wanted. Also 6 slotted the pet just for bonuses, as it gives good def values.

only 18acc +6 to hit (kismet) but im not certain how big a deal that is with my defense reducing primary. I would not be against dropping the soaring slotting for a full purple set instead to get 15 more acc/10 more recharge but it's out of my price range currently- seems well worth loseing a little S/L when i can just make it up with DA anyhow.

final regen 613%

End use 1.02/s vs recovery of 4.45/s is why i did not think i needed body mastery.

maxhp is 147%.2 of base.

did not take hasten/ss because i don't have the room for that much recharge and it seemed like just more to fuss but that would work fine as well.

If you see any holes let me know, or just let me know if you like it. I wasted alot of time stareing at the screen to tinker with it.
