Hello again =)

Just got back into the game from a 3-4 year break. Been reading the forums for two weeks now getting all the info i can and getting a feel for the game again.

So i have decided on a /SD Scrapper. Love the shield look and think the power set feels my style. What are good primaries for it? Been thinking of EleM/SD would be hella fun. What your thoughts?

Oh and why is SS such a big deal and why is it even more of a big deal if Scrappers get it through proliferation?

Thnx!

Welcome back.

There are a lot of good primaries for SD.

In particular, the following 3 are probably the most popular but SD is not really limited to being a good pairing with just these 3.

Fire Melee: Probably the most well rounded, has good ST and good AoE capabilities, doesnt require a ton of rech to get a decent ST chain.

Dark Melee: The most survivable option with a self heal and an endurance recovery tool. It can be one of the top ST performers with SD, but only with a ton of rech. Poor AoE, even with Shield Charge.

Electric Melee: All out AoE option, very poor ST. LR & SC make for an incredibly strong, spawn wiping combination.

BS is a solid 4th since it looks thematic and Parry helps /sd with def until you can soft cap. Once the next set of ports hit, Axe and Mace will be worth looking at as well.

EDIT: SS for Scrappers In sort, double stacked Rage + fully saturated AAO = jaw dropping foul mouthed exclamations of glee amounts of damage.

Electric/SD gets to pull off its big attack (Lightning Rod + Shield Charge) every 25-30 seconds with top-end builds. It is great for burst damage and works well for a play style that involves moving between spawns. The powers get to recharge as you move. However, long-duration pulls of more than 16 enemies (like in ambush farming maps) tends to make Elec/SD's main weakness stand out. It lacks sustainable damage.

If you are the type of person who likes to fire a big cannon every 30 seconds, Elec/SD is for you. If you prefer napalm that burns anything it touches, Fire/SD is for you. If you prefer focusing on one target with a laser, DM/SD fits that style.

Well for farming and fighting elite bosses and smaller, ive found the single tgt dmg of my ELM/SD/Blaze to be quite sufficient. Ofc its not very good, but as pointed out, its mostly about AoE anyway... However, ELM is not all about firing your big cannon every 30 secs (imo)

This is the perfect summary.

I can barely stand to play my Elec/SD scrapper these days due to the terrible single target DPS. After the initial mini nuke barrage, you're pretty much stuck doing crappy single target damage and mediocre AoE damage until they are back up.

DM is survivable as all hell, and does excellent single target damage. When it comes to AoEs, DM is terrible and you need fuel to feed your soul drain. Fireball from the epic pools does help a lot with the low AoE.

I don't have a Fire/SD, but it seems like it would be an all around great choice for superb single target damage and good AoE.

I actually have an SS/SD brute, and really he is my favorite all around /SD character. Good single target damage with gloom, decent, sustainable AoE with Footstomp and Dark Obliteration. Darkest Night is great for incarnate content as it helps me close the gap between my 48% defense and the 59% required to be incarnate soft capped. The fact that it helps my teammates survive better is icing on the cake. Brutes also have higher HP, which is nice when something manages to land a hit. I originally took aid self, but found myself not using it often, so I dropped it and started packing greens instead.

The draw backs are obviously the rage crash, and the endurance trouble you get into with rage and hasten and spamming AoEs. I pretty much had to take the ageless destiny to avoid endurance issues. Brutes benefit less from AAO and shield charge compared to scrappers, but I really enjoy the all around-ness offered by super strength. Everyone wants different things out of their toons, and you have a wide range of options with what works well with /SD.

I may someday make a Fire/SD scrapper. It seems that it could quite possibly the most damaging it terms of /SD. It would have less health and would lack the darkest night in soul mastery i love so much, but the damage would be impressive and not dealing with the rage crash is nice.
