Can you save my very first toon (Kat/Dark)?

Dante

Hello Scrapper gurus. It’s taken me a while to post this up but as I slowly scrape my way to 50, I think it’s about time to sort this build out once and for all. And I need help to do so.

Way back when I rolled up on the EU servers almost six years ago, my second toon (after an aborted Fire/Fire Blaster) was my signature character Dante, a Katana/Dark Armour Scrapper. Even though that was a long time ago, I keep going back to him again and again, trying to make the character work. I’ve burnt through more respecs on him than any of my other characters but no matter what I do, I can’t seem to beef him up into the beast I think he can be. And although I’ve made alternate versions and taken them to 50, I still feel that for a character who is the oldest on my roster and is even my forum avatar, it’s about time I got help to make him work.

Basically, my issues are always the same: I gasp for Endurance in a long fight and I am frightfully squishy in large mobs. Certain foes that do Energy damage (I’m looking at you Rikti) cream me easily. And despite my best efforts, I simply cannot get Cloak of Fear to work very well.

And yet at the same time, I keep seeing boasts of how Kat/Dark is amazing. And although I have looked at some of those ‘uberbuilds’, I can’t seem to get the same tricks to work on my build. I’m fairly certain what powers I want and in what order but either my slotting is woeful or I’m missing a trick when it comes to hitting that elusive softcap. The best I can manage is 30% to melee attacks but even that does not seem to be enough.

And so I come here for help. I have posted my prospective build below but it is far from perfect. My goals are not to be untouchable or purpled up to the nines. I am a casual player, a poor marketeer and I never build with Purple or PvP sets in mind. The odd expensive IO is not an issue with Alignment Merits. What I’d like to achieve is a build that is playable (as in, does not run out of Endurance after every long fight), can exemp occasionally with little impact on performance and that can use Cloak of Fear effectively. If I build for Endurance and Accuracy, the softcap eludes me and vice versa. I don’t want to make an ultimate, untouchable build, just one that is fun and doesn’t chew blues all the time or fall flat whenever faced with a +2 boss.

So, if you can help, or tweak my build to be effective, I would be very grateful. Many thanks.

a build that's somewhere in the middle?..... I like
What powers do you actually want in the build.... OG and CoF? SotW? Darkness Mastery?
Ohhh and getting Cardiac should solve most of your endurance problems

Aim for 32.5% defense to S/L and E/N, or melee+ranged+AoE. Then, use 1 small inspiration to reach 45% for the tougher fights. Don't worry about fire defense because it is rare to find mobs with fire damage at 50. Shadow Meld from Soul Mastery is another good option for boosting defense temporarily if you don't mind switching to red side long enough to unlock patron pools. That should take care of your survivability issues, for the most part.

To fix your endurance issues, you first need to prioritize endurance reduction in your toggles. Most of them don't have 50% endurance reduction when you could get around 90%. You are missing the Miracle and Numina procs. Most people slot those in Health. They make a huge difference. After that, Physical Perfection is a decent source of endurance recovery. That's if you choose to the Body Mastery pool. You don't need the attacks that you picked up from Darkness Mastery if you get enough recharge to run a good attack chain. Incarnate powers offer two slots for endurance management. The first is the Cardiac Alpha boost, which reduces endurance costs. The second is the Ageless Destiny, which can give you more endurance than you will ever need while it is up. At tier 4, the Ageless Destiny can be up almost permanently.

Some tips on slotting to help you reach your goals:

Your sets should stop on either a defense bonus or recharge bonus. Anything else isn't worth the slots because it adds so little that you won't even notice the difference. Yes, that includes your +max end bonuses.

Pick either positional or typed defenses. Getting both doesn't help because of the way defense works. For example, Obliteration is a positional defense set because it adds more melee defense than S/L defense. The only time you should go against that rule is if you are close to your defense goal and need just a bit more to reach it and the powers you have available to slot can only give the other type of defense.

Impervium Armor is not a very good set for this build. Aegis (3 or 5 slots) would be good for positional defense. Reactive Armor would be good for typed defense.

Super Speed would be better with a Blessing of the Zephyr proc so you can enhance the defense in Combat Jumping.

I agree with Syntax42. If your goal isn't to be completely untouchable without inspirations, 32.5% defense is fine. I like positional defense, so I'd go 32.5% ranged and AoE, and lean on Divine Avalanche to hit 45% melee and lethal, preferably with one hit.

From that perspective, your melee and lethal defense are too high. You could consider swapping your Obliterations for Eradications and doing something else with your epic powers. And as Syntax42 says, focus on either typed or positional bonuses, not both.

Chances are excellent that the Cardiac Alpha will fix all your endurance problems and then some. My build is DESIGNED to burn endurance at an insane clip, and the Cardiac Alpha still takes care of me just fine.

Try to make room for Hasten. Having Dark Regeneration on a fast recharge is a good idea. Also get some more recharge in the power itself.
