Hey folks,
I was just wondering if anyone has an experience with Mental/Fire Blasters and if so how do they perform overall for damage, I know they're probably glass cannons due to being Blasters, but still Im pondering making one, so yah

Do you mean Fire/MM (Fire Blast/Mental Mastery) or Psy/Fire (Psychic Blast/Fire Manipulation)?

There should be plenty of guides for the former - or at least threads about it - as it is probably the most popular Blaster combo since /MM was added.

I mean Psy/Fire

I'm working on a Psi/Fire right now. He's only up to 28, but he's been a lot of fun so far. The biggest problem that I'm running into at this point are the psi-resistant mobs. BP are probably the worst offenders for me at the moment, since they're fairly prevalent in the 20s and my blasts are like shooting spitballs at the zombies.

The nice thing is the solid damage provided by /fire, for me. Combustion and Fire Sword Circle together give you decent AoE damage to make up for the fact that psi blast is fairly heavily ST focused, and having Consume is always nice, even if I haven't found it too necessary so far. The combination of fire and lethal damage in the secondary also helps deal with enemies who are heavily resistant to your damage type.

So far, I'm enjoying it. I do worry about the higher levels, however, since I know that the big psi resists come in hard later on with carnies and every other group with stupid robots. However, it plays very differently to any of my other blasters and it's a nice change of pace to have to stop and think about what I am doing. Also, the ability to tear apart those *$&#ing CoT spectrals like tissue paper is worth its weight in gold.

I tried Psy/Fire a couple of times and gave up on each in the 20s.

There were several issues for me:

  1. The biggest was the the lack of mitigation necessary to get full value out of the slow-to-take-effect AoEs of Combustion (almost 7.5s for the full damage) and Blazing Aura. This was what occasioned the deletion.
  2. Psi Tornado's alpha mitigation is too unreliable with only a 50% chance for KU.
  3. Scramble Thoughts has that painfully long cast (3s).
  4. The -Recharge doesn't help a whole lot. It's not that strong on a Blaster and you're too squishy (unlike a /Psy Defender) to get full value out of it. If you're letting stuff live long enough to cycle its attack chain you're in trouble. With Bosses the -Recharge would help, but generally not enough. I found myself using TK Blast to buy time to stack Scramble Thoughts or simply relying on KB and range for mitigation and burst damage to put them away fast.

I think Hot Feet would have helped quite a bit had I played to that level - as would an Epic armor - but after two false starts I decided that Psychic Blast on Blasters is a mediocre set. It's sort of like Martial Arts was before the buff; it simply has too many secondary effects that don't stack and aren't strong enough by themselves to be particularly effective. And no great strengths to offset that shortcoming. In the end I tweaked my concept and went with Ice/Fire instead.

I liked my Psy/Fire blaster on test. /Fire makes up the lack of AoE in Psy blast and Psy gives some control which is generally helpful when playing /Fire. I found it fun to knock down the enemies inside my Hot Feet with Psy Nado. The combo blooms late (relative to most blaster combos) as a spawn destroyer since Psy does not get its AoE until level 18, but you get Aim and a solid single target chain early.

Psy Nado and FSC is a strong combo, but benefits highly from someone else controlling aggro because the animation time is looooong. Since I prefer AoE melting and I already had plenty of /Fire blasters in live, I never built one after my test character. Psy blast is not my cup of tea, but if I'd ever make one on live, it would likely be Psy/Fire, unless a compelling new secondary gets made that seems a good match to me.

Why Blasters? Empathy Sucks.
So, you want to be Mental?
What the hell? Let's buff defenders.
