CPU Upgrade safe to overclock?

Posted

My old CPU recently died and I was originally gonna purchase the exact same one. But one slightly better cost just a bit more. I've since installed the cpu and have a question, is it safe to overclock? I've searched the interwebz, but, learned a long time ago we've got some of the most tech savvy people playing this game.

The computer is an Asus G50vt-X1 BestBuy version.
The dead CPU was an Intel Core 2 duo P8400 (dead)
The new CPU is an Intel Core 2 duo P8600

The computer came with an overclock feature, just unsure if its safe to use with the new CPU. Any advice would be welcomed.

On a desktop, I'd say yes.

On a notebook, I'd say no.

You can try if you want, but get some software to monitor CPU temps. Burning out your new notebook would REALLY suck.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

It's an Asus G50vt X1, it came with its own CPU overclocking software. I was able to safely overclock the P8400 for nearly 2 years, just making sure the P8600 doesn't push the system too far. It has a heatsink and thermal silver 5, idle temps of both cores are 40c. Tried calling Asus, but, they don't have data about modding systems.
