I came to City of Heroes in June of 2004. I had heard about it in development, but a griefer-laden soured departure from Ultima Online left me doubting that people could behave themselves playing another MMO. Shortly after the release of CoH, two life-long friends of mine told me I had to see this game and was incredulous that I wasn't in on it from the get-go. Doubtingly, I watched, fell in love and subbed within a few days. Since then, I've been an on and off player due more to my Gaming ADD than anything else.
Since 2004, comic book media has been growing. Past the monthly comics, books and movies have become more and more prevalent. I know the general background of these stories well. I've been reading comics for years and years. For most DC, Marvel and many Indie characters, I have a decent enough idea of their background and the world they're in. While I haven't been as up-to-date as I was in the past, good storylines tend to find their way to me eventually. Herein lies the reason for this post. Though I've played CoH on and off through 2004 and have had a passive interest in the fiction that makes up the world we play in, I don't have as good of an understanding of the mythology of Paragon City and its "sisters" as I should. I've talked before about reading up on "everything", but never really got past an hour or so into it.
Bearing this in mind, is the game's website the best place to start to get caught up in the mythology behind CoX or is there someplace better? Over the past two or so years, I've left my subscription mainly to play a number of "backlog" games I have. I've made some progress there, but CoH always comes calling. Here I am again and I'm wishing I had as much knowledge of CoH's history as I do of the characters and worlds of DC, Marvel and the like.
For what it's worth, I'm currently playing solo through the Going Rogue storyline (from Pratorian to Resistance) and truly enjoy it. I'm roughly level 16 (haven't played in a while, so I don't exactly remember). My highest level alt is I believe 38 or so (serious alt-itis and gaming ADD played well into this). I know there's good times to come.
