Simplified PvP for Fun and Profit
Good beginnings to a concept, but for now I have to /unsign this. Something like this would take entirely to long to hash out and make work correctly. The basic thing to remember is that people who do not want to PvP won't. People who do not like PvP won't. The people who do like to PvP might, but you can't be sure.
With the first 2 groups of people, targeting them is a bad idea. And there aren't "enough" people who do to target them. If PvP was something introduced from the beginning, then it might be something. Maybe if they make CoH 2, something like this would be ok if they implemented it right from the get go.

The idea has potential. A streamlined PVP subsystem bringing to mind other competitive PC games could possibly work, and I would be inclined to try it, as a non-PVPer.
Though I do kind of agree that you're essentially building an entirely new game at that point. Sure, you'll be cutting out, say, a third of all powers...but then comes the headache of trying to balance them.
...It now dawns on me that PVP in general should really probably be handled on a power-by-power basis, but doing so is too time intensive for them to ever actually accomplish.

Sounds vaguely similar to DCUO's legends pvp, in the sense of giving you preselected powers rather than your own ones. Just without the added fluff of playing as signature characters. And come to think of it, last I checked that was still unbalanced as all hell despite the static (and thus more easily balanced, you'd think) builds they're working with.

This isn't a proposal for a complete PvP revamp, just a new style of Arena combat that I think could be fun and get people playing and enjoying PvP.
The goal is to keep things as simple as possible. Your build doesn't matter, your enhancements don't matter. Invention Set bonuses don't matter (though they could be optional). You get a set of powers based on your Archetype and Primary/Secondary powersets, plus one travel power (the first one you picked, or possibly just choose one before the match). Some powers may be changed to help balance the Archetypes and powersets, while enhancing their own unique styles.
Everyone can just jump in and play and know that everyone else is relatively their equal. You have less powers to worry about. There is no Inspiration use, though if possible, some 'power-ups' may be scattered around the map. Your losses aren't counted under your PvP stats, only wins. So just go out there and have fun.
And oh yeah- the "profit" part: There could be different types of matches (team, free-for-all, capture the flag), but they're all timed. Once the timer runs out, everyone, win or lose, has a chance to receive a random PvP recipe drop.
Obviously there's a lot more details to hash out, but what do you think of a simplified PvP system that reduces you to six or seven core powers and puts everyone on a level playing field (as much as possible)?
