Not to put to fine a point on it, but I think i would prefer to buy a new computer than try to do everything that set of instructions asked me to do. I play the game for fun, and that looks like a wasted afternoon of computer hacking.

The info gained from following those procedures—which actually aren't all that onerous—makes it possible for you to get useful help and suggestions from the forum in the least amount of time.
Buying a new computer is a good idea too.

I can sum my own howto up into two sentences.
Download and run two programs.
Paste the output from those programs here into your thread so people can dissect them and maybe tell you what's wrong.

NO HACKING INVOLVED.
How exactly is that horrendous? It quite literally takes longer to SUMMARIZE it than it does to actually DO it.
It's spelled out in excruciating detail in the HOWTO with the thought that some readers may not be very computer literate. So it's best to stick with simple, but exacting instructions.
