Having some system lockup problems

I've been having computer problems over the past few months or so. They are intermittent and happen during just about anything while playing CoX. The screen will lock up, and then the whole computer locks up. I end up having to do a hard reboot, as nothing functions at this point.

I'm not quite that knowledgable on reading the CoH Helper and Hijack This results, but I know thats a good starting point.

Are you getting any error messages? Have you checked the system log for them?

From the Microsoft system you mean? This was the last one that registered, but I've had the lockup issues since then, without any notifications.

Unfortunately, this is almost surely some kind of hardware issue. Could be heat, could be a failing fan in the video card, could be power supply problems, could be just about anything. You can try to mitigate the any heat issues by cleaning any fans inside the case: CPU, video, etc. and generally removing as much dust as possible. But in the end, some kind of hardware needs to be swapped. I'd start with the video card.

Damn I was afraid of that...I generally clean it out weekly, the video card was a recent upgrade (read: in the past several months) I really don't know if I can upgrade to a better one with the MB/Processor I have. I also tend to bog down to almost nothing during raids or large teams of masterminds.

Try turning "Ambient Occlusion" and shadows completly off and see if you get any errors. If you do, try running in safe mode and see if any occur. Stressing the processor/video card with eye candy can cause heat issues in itself, so I'd try to eliminate some of the extra calculations their doing.

Your card and processor are kinda toward the low end running Windows 7, and you do have quite a few services running in the background, and I think skype pretty resource hungry.

See if changing settings in game first, helps, before buyin into any new gear.

One more thing, download and run http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

It's a fairly easy to use registery cleaner that is pretty safe. Just make sure to make a backup when it asks before hitting "fix all". You can always reinstall the backup should it cause an issue. I use it all the time and it can fix alot of errors.

DL'd the registry cleaner, and ran it and also changed the settings. See how it goes this weekend. I was curious if upgrading my monitor would help any, as its an older flat screen 19", and there is a nice 23" on sale nearby.

Most of those services are turned off, as I noticed them running constantly awhile back.
I'd really hope to avoid replacing the processor right now, as money is limited, but if I'm maxed out as far as vid cards that work with the processor and motherboard, I guess I don't have a choice.

Thanks for the tips.

Well, with monitors bigger is better. Really. It'll make the game look better and you'll be able to see details you missed before.

Bigger monitors will make your vid card work harder too.

Here are a few things:

I have had to deal with the same kind of problem in the past. It may well be the driver or another software conflict with it.

It also could well be the vid card over heating or failing (as said above).

Doing the driver cleaner thing is a good start.

If it is the vid card there may be an easy fix.

See: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?...highlight=bake

Or other threads on how to bake your vid card.

Also see : http://www.frys.com/product/6231920?...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG Geforce 210 for 49.99 and comes with a $20 rebate, so really 29.99

There are plenty of new video cards to be had under $50 and it would upgrade you to dx 10 or 11 as well.

this one is $60 has more dram too, all those fancy ultra mode options and aa/af eat up a lot of ram.

I've had some luck with good prices on amazon too for monitors and computer parts.

Monitor your card temperatures. Since you have an Nvidia card you probably already have Nvidia system monitor installed. Watch the temp of your video card as you play. As far as I've found you can't force it to be on top all the time so you will just have to tab to it occasionally and check the temperature. Also, the moment you change focus away from COH your GPU temperature will start dropping so you have to have the monitor running in the background in order to get an immediate temperature reading.

Also when you say you clean out your computer once a week I hope that you are blowing it out with air that isn't under too high a pressure and that you are using something to keep the fans from spinning when you clean them. Allowing the fans to spin freely when you are blowing dust off them can damage your hardware since a spinning motor generates electricity that feeds back into the board.

Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!

_Zep_, thanks for the link. I prolly will end up replacing the card for now and possibly get a new monitor. I really want to upgrade my whole thing, but that's not gonna happen right now. The baking trick looks interesting, but I don't think it's worth the effort in this situation since a newer, better card isn't too much cash.

Mandu, the times I monitored the temps, they were a lil high, but not dangerously high. I use the can air when I clean it out, but I try not to go wild with it.

I just finished a Hami Raid, and I didn't get to watch much, as my screen was super low fps....suppose there is nothing wrong other then just having old/weak hardware.
