One Purple to Softcap Fire/Fire

I've been tinkering in Mids, trying to throw together a build for a Fire/Fire tanker that's one small purple inspiration away from the soft cap. I figured that since I was trying for a full softcap (sorta), I'd be better off going for positional defense. I got there with the help of the Gladiator's Armor proc, but I'd really like to try and do it without - my best attempt without the proc was 32.4% to Melee and AoE and 31.2% to Ranged.

Could anyone help me pick up those last few points to get rid of the ludicrously expensive PvP IO?

If you want to do it without the Gladiator's proc, you may need to take Stealth pool power. It won't hinder your ability to get aggro or tank. You just have to initiate the combat most of the time, or get close to them. Also, Maneuvers and Combat Jumping could be enhanced for more defense, but it wouldn't get you to 32.5% in this build without the proc.

Another option you might consider, which would probably take less slot compromises and/or Inf, is to go for 20+% defense to most (or all) vectors.

A medium purple (+25% def) then softcaps you to everything, and they are very plentiful and cheap.

You could also probably combine that with as much S/L defense as you could get (or afford) for when you don't have a purple up.

trying to even get close to the soft cap in positional is not gonna happen really. most of us with soft cap fire tanks have gone the route of s/l and i even got it so my soft capped in melee as well. since thats mainly as tanks where we are 99% of the time.

i would redo your thinking in postional and go for the s/l way. its been great for me i can tell you.

If you're willing to consider "soft cap with DN up", go evil, pick up soul mastery/DN and slot that with 4 slots. You can do max end redux with Dark Watcher's set and end up with DN doing about -16% to-hit. Now you're only targetting 29% to hit the cap. That probably frees you enough on slotting you afford the slots for DN too. :-P

The problem with DN is that +level mobs resist a lot of it thanks to the Purple patch function.

+3 mobs resist 35% of it (16% x 0.65 = 10.%).
+4 mobs resist 52% of it (16% x 0.48 = 7.68%).

AV's also resist it by 85%, if I remember correctly.

Oh ye of little faith. 32.5% defense to all positions without the Glad Armor proc and without Stealth. No buffer, but I can use a second purple for that.

And yeah, I was avoiding DN partly because of AVs and higher-levels resisting it, and partly because I'd rather not go Villain for a patron arc if it's not needed.

EDIT: I can swap one of the LotG Defenses for a common Defense, I guess, since I'm over the cap for 10% regen bonuses.
