Fire/Spine Build

Hi Folks,
I was wondering if you could critique this build. My Fire/Spines toon is a bit squishy so I figured I'd add some defense to it. I realize that I could choose the Reactive Armor for some of the resistance sets but I'm a little concerned about endurance so I went with the Impervium. Any comments? Thanks.

Don't drop miracle +recovery in healing flames, else it is only up for the 2-minute duration post a flames activation.

Your slotting for def seems confused. I see things I think are +S/L and things that are +melee. Pick one and stick to it. I know they both give a bonus to the other, but it is a lesser bonus.

If you're 6-slotting a power, you need a really good reason to do so. You're spending slots so heavy to pick up fairly small defense bonuses you end up seriously overspent on slots, with good powers that have no added slots. Think about dropping your epic/patron stuff (you've got enough AoEs you don't need more!) and picking up things like hover, maneuvers, and stealth. There's some easy +def there that lets you give up on def elsewhere in the build in order to slot things better.

Heck, let's talk fully-def slotting that combat jumping. Sure, its a low base. And 60% enhancement isn't a ton... but it is always on and even 60% of something like 2.5% is ... more than you get from quite a few of the +def bonuses.

Thanks for the reply Rhysem. How would you attack this to get to the magic 32.5% melee defense level? I do not want another toggle as this guy has a lot of toggles already going so I'm not interested in Maneuvers. Or is this level more of a pipe dream and will vastly affect my attacks. I need the Darkness pool for Tenebrous Tentacles to keep mobs from fleeing burn. It also serves as a mild accuracy debuff so it isn't totally useless. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Here is my 32.5% Spines/Fire build. It sacrifices damage in terms of global recharge, but it is VERY hard to kill, and it is fun to see tons of numbers all over the screen.

Thanks for the reply. That's a decent build you have there. If you were to use the Darkness Epic, how would you go (powers/enhancers with TT obviously for Burn)? Thanks again.

If you're going for smashing/lethal it's better to 2-slot rectified reticle in a +tohit power then to use 6 slots for the whole guassian's set.

I see that done on a lot of builds.

At 32.5% defense, a small purple inspiration can soft cap you. Anything in between 32.5% and 45% is wasted slots. You also have mixes of sets that give S/L and melee defense. It is best to focus on one, because they cover most of the same attacks. I would suggest going for 32.5% S/L and E/N. That will get you enough defense to not be squishy in most content while leaving you with plenty of slots for recharge and other bonuses.

Slotting your defense toggles better would help a lot.

You picked up Hasten but didn't slot it very well. It is not worth taking if you can't get the recharge time reasonably close to being perma with a good build.

Just in case you missed the memo, Burn was revamped fairly recently so that it had a large up-front damage spike and no longer causes a fleeing effect for enemies sitting in the flames. Tenebrous Tentacles is a fine power in any case, but Fire Armor users no longer need to use an immobilize power to leverage Burn.

As for the defense itself, can't look around on Mids atm, but there are other means cheaper than Kinetic Combat to crank up the S/L defense to moderate levels. Grabbing some pool powers that boost defense is very handy to lower the cost (Weave, Maneuvers, and Combat Jumping are all nice), but there are some lesser used sets that provide decent values. With Alpha Slots to fill in gaps, you can get away with some unorthodox slotting (like not maxing out an attack for damage) if you have an eye for it, and find some debuff sets that work.


Rule number six of an empathy defender is NEVER underestimate a blaster's ability to die. I don't care if he has CM, Fort, both RAs, bubbles (both FF and Sonic), and is fighting next to a Storm defender with hurricane on. If there is a way to die in that situation, the blaster will find it.

Enemies still run out of Burn, but that is only based on the AI's code to avoid AoEs like that. I find that slows from Spines powers are good enough to fight with Burn patches on the ground.

Cost is not a consideration for people seeking to min/max, like me.
